Howdy,

I dont even know if "races' would be the right word. I just finished putting all my pieces together and gluing everything (whew, that was a lot of glue) for my IG army (im a new player). My brother's friend, who is introducing us to the hobby, commented that he wasn't sure if it was "legal" to mix, for example, Cadians in the same squad as Catachans, which is something that I had to do to make the limited weaponry I have work out correctly.

Just wanted to check for truthfulness of that statement. I thought it was all one big IG and we were here to kick some arse so it wouldn't matter, but want to make sure so I can rectify if need be.

Thanks for any insight.

Yeah, they're like separate regiments of an army, they all fight on the same side, just generally in separate units.

No reason that you can't mix the models though. Maybe some of your troops are beefier than others?

No one is really gonna care.

You can always say that regimental control sent them to fight along side another unit to defeat a big threat

Ok. I can accept that some people wont like it for "lore" reasons, which is fine. As you say I can make up any story I want that sounds decent. I am just making sure that there isnt an actual rules reason why it cant be so.

I appreciate your thoughts.

It's perfectly legal. They're all Imperial Guard, which is all that matters as far as being "official" goes. Of course it may not look terribly cohesive and as you say, fluff fans may be annoyed, but you're within your rights to do so.

Rules wise, theres no reason you cant mix and match - Provided the models your mixing dont have any special rules that you plan on using . A guardsman is a Guardsman is a guardsman ad nauseum

Just say its a scratch company made from the remnants of several depleted units after a battle they did it like three times in the gaunts ghosts books and the cain books started out with him needing to pacify two regiments being melded together. Athough the cain example was involving two valhallan regiments, the gaunt books have them being replenished with militia from a hive world and then a recon unit from somewhere else.

The Departmento Munitorum kitbashes new regiments out of broken ones on an hourly basis. Hell, the new Codex even mentions it. As long as it works for you, the critics nead to realize IT'S A GAME. And then get to the important things, like play.

I have praetorians as the "core" of my IG (zulu war redcoats).
The rest of my infantry are carapace vets (kasrkin) and penal battalion (catachans).

Easily done.

Then again, an entire army of any GW non-plastic IG would bankrupt even Geneva, unless done over the pace of decades.

Check the codex. It says that different regiments get stuck together all the time into ad-hoc formations. And, frankly, why NOT use different models, as long as they have the same paint scheme?
It's a human holding a lasgun. That's all it really needs to be. I mean, so what if your mechanised squads are steel legion, the basic infantry are cadian, and your veterans are catachans?

Mixing them in squads also has fluff precedent. Read the Ciaphas Cain novels; he does it with two Valhallan regiments.
