Have you ever had a annoying time playing with people younger than 13?
I'm just curious, since I play against my 12 year old brother's tau, and he generally quits by turn 3,
our last game he quit at the end of his 1st turn since he only killed 1 boy with his shooting
anyone else have similar experiences

I know just what you mean, in my gaming group we have a wide age range from35 - 15 and you can definately tell the difference, im 18. but the 15 year olds are very annoying to play against, cant pay attention and dont know rules, they give up super easy, usually in the first couple of turns, and dont always stay at the table for the battle. Krazy kids.

I avoid playing with anyone younger than 13.
They can't stay still, they don't shut up, and they quit when they start to lose.
Thankfully most of the younger gamers at my FLGS are only there to collect the figs. They're going to be playing when they understand the rules.
And they aren't allowed in our weekly sessions anyway.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I played with one kid who was younger than what i think to be ten, and then another right after. The first kid was playing Imperial Guard and his stuff was BEAUTIFUL. I asked if he'd painted his army and he said, "yes of course, though my dad bought it all since he wanted me to get into the hobby." I started to get worried since people who bring their kids into the game are usually the ones who teach them to win at all costs. So I played. I won, he took it great, we had fun, and he even thanked me for showing him a bunch of flaws in his army.
His friend I played was an absolute idiot. Golden Necrons... Drove me nuts to see all that unwashed Shining Gold hit the field. He proceeds to pull out the two monoliths in our 1000 match and I facepalmed. This kid drove me nuts. Once again, I won. He accused me of cheating. Said I wasn't able to put a venerable dreadnought from the Space Wolves codex in a Drop pod or the fact that the three power fists in one squad was also an impossibility. I politely pulled out my Codex, showed him where it said I could take two per squad, then showed him my army list where it said I had a wolf guard leader with a power fist as well. He was miffed at the fact that a mere squad of Space Wolves took out his monolith, though I was amazed myself it happened.
Mind you, this was all last night.

The munchkins at the store are HILARIOUS to listen to. Their grasp of the game is adorable when they're bragging to each other about their unstoppable armies. Anyway, I probably wouldn't want to play them all that much.
I played a kid who was only a few years younger than me a little while ago. He was a major pain. First off, he made a big deal of "challenging" me while I was playing a game with friends. So he acts like this is some grudge match against his worst enemy. On top of the attitude, he made some stuff up (berzerkers attacked a tac squad in cover w/ grenades. he claimed that his guys struck at I5). It wasn't even satisfying to wipe the table with him because it didn't feel like his skill was on the same level (and I don't think I'm "all that" either).

I've played a 12 Year Old with a beautifully painted Warrior Priest of Sigmar, including his other stuff of course.
Then again, I played another 10 year old who played Orks against my Chaos Marines. He often stated the his Boyz "Were better at Krumpin' Den 'Umies", and that I wasn't a good player as he "Saw what taktiks I wuz Usin'" I quickly re-wrote my list to include 10 Berzerkers with Kharn and handed him his face. He accused me of cheating, but no one payed much attention to him other than asking him to (Politely) Be quiet.

I was GW store and one kid and wanted to play with so a 20 something say ok. The kid didn't have dice or templates. Another group of kids and adults were playing and the GW employee had to remind the kid that orks should be charging amond other reminders. If ever had toy soldiers as a kid you no that was played and it seems that is how a lot of these young kids want to play. I think part of the problem is how GW is marketing to younger and younger kids. When I played years ago everyone in the store was in their 20s and 30s. The gaming age has definately become younger.
Although the gaming is all adults at my FLGS from what I have seen which is why I like it better there then at the GW store. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh by the way I have played with many preteens and many of them are more emotinal and lax about rules. It is rare to have a sharp preteen that can even meet you half way. It does suck when you are a player and the dungeon master too!

we have a local kid, i think he is 12 years old, and he plays orks. he is funny to listen too. i was playing against someone else in the back room with my orks on random saturday and harry walks in. he saw i was using the KFF mek and made it a ppoint to lecture me on how Grotsnik is ten times better then a mek. his rational was "come on, its and invincible save"
granted i do enjoy grotsnik, i wasnt about to pay 5 points per boyz when the KFF mek was giving cover to 120 shoota boyz!

I try not to.
Being 3 times their age has something to do with it.
Of course, being able to do the whole "that's not a tantrum, THIS is a tantrum!" when they lose really badly* does kind of make up for it. Still, some of them are learning to lose well, and in time, they may learn to lose brilliantly.
*losing badly is not the getting tabled aspect. It's the throwing dice, being grumpy and sulky and generally acting like a tool.

It depends on the kid and who taught them how to play. The youngest player we have, is my nephew at 8 (you guys remember his necrons) Sometimes he spaces, but cmon he's 8. A quick "hey snap outta it kid!" and he's back in it. Also we teach him, no matter how bad your loosing, dont give up.

Some of the under 13's can be a bit tedious to deal with, but all in all it's the 14-25 crowd that has found the crown of most irritating in this book of grudges.
'Course, isn't this game only rated to 13+?

I'm 14, and although I may be possibly biased I'm fine playing against most people my age. There one guy my age who is a bit of a pain to play against. He complains whenever something doesn't go his way (for example, skulltaker failing his ward save against my killing blow champion of khorne). He also occasionally makes stuff up (bloodletters have 4 attacks! 2 basic, 1 charging, 1 from MoK). And there is another guy, quite a bit older than me who proclaims that whatever army he's using is the best. I beat him most times, but he also is known to make up rules (DA apocatharies allow the entire squad to re-roll any save, even in close combat).

I generally don't care who I play. I've played enough man-children to know that a 13 year-old is at least acting his age if he acts up. They're the future geeks that we need to keep the hobby going. We need to be tolerant and very, very patient with them. If a kid starts acting up then tell him to relax, it's just a game, and let's have fun.
If a kid wants to get into the hobby he needs help. Playing the bitter, old man card is going to get me nowhere.

I recently played against an 11 year old in a local tournament, he was one of the nicest, coolest little dudes I have met. We had a great game, and he was a great sportsman and alot of fun to play.
The next game saw him playing and older man(late 40's early 50's) who litterly didnt like his shooting against the kids assault termies, and threw a fit, packed up and went home.
its all relative

Now, making jokes about the title of "playing with people younger then 13" aside, i never liked playing them as alot of the time they disliked losing-that was my major issue. and the way some of them can recount any rule upon demand, yet moan when you wont let them play with entirely unpainted armies.

Sorry, I wasn't clear there. The Berzerkers were mine. He claimed that his tactical marines got a bonus for being in cover despite my grenades. Which is cheating. Either way I let him have it. Ended up tearing the tac marines to bits anyway.
I had a good experience recently against a kid who was significantly younger than me. He played eldar and beat me soundly. He obviously knew his stuff and had a very firm grasp of tactics. I watched him finish up the game he was playing before me (against a kid his age with bare plastic IG) and noticed the difference. One kid knew every rule and explained them to the other, while the IG kid desperately tried to argue that he could do x even though a quick read through the rulebook would have shown that you can't.

That last line perfectly encapsulates the issue here. We have several under-13 players (including my 10-year old son) at our venues. They are always welcome to play in the group. Why? Because, as adults, we modeled proper gaming behavior. We play to win, but see losing as a learning experience. Nobody throws tantrums. We immediately correct any anti-social behavior (both kids and adults). In short, we are good gamers, which makes the kids good gamers.
We have one 12-year old that used to be like some of the kids mentioned in this thread. Completely unpainted army. Constantly complaining that he lost all the time, and that everyone's army looked better, and that nobody wanted to play against him. A truly miserable kid. Finally, I started teaching him about sportsmanship, and how by learning it, people would want to play him. I taught him that opponents love to play a painted army - especially when they themselves spent hours painting theirs. The very next day, he ran up to show me a couple of his newly painted figures. He was so proud (he should have been - they were painted great for a first-time painter his age!)
Did I stop there? No. I told him what a great job he did, and that if he wanted to take his painting to the next level, he could try a simple wash and drybrushing - which I promptly began to show him. The next day, he showed me his creations using the new techniques. Lather, rinse, repeat. I caught him the other day showing his friends, who were thinking about starting an army, how to paint. I was very proud of him. He's now a welcome addition to the group, and I'm guessing, will be in the hobby for a long time.
My rather wordy point here is that if you take the time to mentor some of the kids instead of just brushing them off, you may be surprised to find that these kids are willing (and WANT) to learn from someone. A few of the kids, I know, have a rather crappy home life, and enjoy being taught properly by a responsible adult.
This is one of my first posts, after a loooong hiatus from the game (as in, Rogue Trader). Thanks for the forum!

The experiences I've had transcend age. I've played games with 30+ year olds that gloat and scream with good rolls and get teary eyed and full of excuses when a game doesn't turn out in their favor. I've had good and bad experiences with old and young.
I have avoided gaming in stores for the most part though for the last few years. Because GW is a business, they are very reluctant to ask a potential buyer to leave despite cheating, poor gamership or other offensive behavior. It's really turned me off to gaming in store. I've invested quite a bit of money on a game room, so I invite only those who I know can play th egame in a fun and honest manner.

There are only 7 adult 'members' of my club, one has just joined the Army and is shipping off for basic shortly. One other hardly ever turns up.
Agreed with the "how they're done raised" bit. Also, like Tyras, I've had good and bad games against old and young players.
Some of the kids are ADD, some have autistic tendencies. Most have two parents that work and no real social role-models (and when they come to the club, the other kids all talk smack, so they're going to copy that behaviour - so we try to keep it to a minimum.).
It's tough trying to help them when you're swimming against the tide.

I disagree.
A 12 year old won't likely know any better - people don't care enough to teach children "lessons of value" in such a way that they're apparent in behavior.
A 30 year old should know better - but there are those that're often too stupid, too selfish, or too (insert random word here) to play the part.
