Returning to the hobby after an 18 year hiatus. Probably just going to paint though, I'm in rural Vermont so the closest thing to a gaming community are the cows in the neighbor's field.

I've been painting some Skaven, but after painting 2 big units of rats I decided to turn to 40k for a while.
My first project is going to be a Word Bearers company - I like their fluff and I've accumulated a ton of stuff for them.

My painting skills are rusty, so hopefully this project will improve my techniques.

Here is the first model I painted as a pattern for the rest.

He might need some highlighting, but he looks more or less tabletop ready. Thoughts?

And here are another 5 in process - I'm using Mechrite Red followed by a red and then black wash.

Comments, encouragement and tips needed and welcomed!

Nice to see another Bearer of the word. My gallery has the few images of my Word Bearers I have on Dakka, though the minor details look horrid. Mine are painted different, though I definitely like yours as well. Great job and hopefully Lorgar's wisdom will keep your hand steady.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

I really like them. The colours look almost like they've been blended. I reckon they look fine as is.

I know. I'm evil.
I saw weird stuff in that place last night. Weird, strange, sick, twisted, eerie, godless, evil stuff. And I want in.

Ahhh Skaven, always fun to paint /sarcasm

Regardless, I like the red on your Word Bearer. Looks like his armor's worn, rather than fresh.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Not to be a jerk or anything but doesn't applying a base coat of the major color just make sense for most SM/CSM armies?

@Gordo it looks great! I cant wait to see the rest of the squad.

That model looks really good! If you can do them quickly to that standard, you'll be in business

Those cows better watch out!!

Thanks for the votes of confidence!
Only problem is that you all have made me want to paint today instead of do work.

A sort of tutorial - lets call it more of a blow by blow - can be found here
I've found that I can get to more detail on marines if I paint them partially assembled and then super-glue them after their final wash.

More pics coming up ASAP!

Thanks! The racks turned out to be a key buy - you have to assemble them but they are made by these guys. I bought them from the Miniatures Market but they seem to be out of them at the moment. I'm sure other online vendors carry them as well.

That's a pretty scary clown.

I like the armor though. It looks kind of smoky or oily, which gives it a good combat feel.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Cool. I like your simple yet effective methods for painting your Word Bearers.

What else do you have in the pipeline for these guys?

I was going for the "color of clotted blood" look described in the Dark Apostle etc. books - seems to be working, I think of this easier paint scheme as my reward for painting up a bunch of Plague Monks.

Speaking of which, Plague Monk sprues have all kinds of handy bits for Word Bearers - more shortly!

Thanks for the kind words on the reds!
Also the bases are from Dragon Forge - I love his stuff.
Got the standard bearer and a heavy bolter fella done.

So I think I'm super clever and don't attach the arm (with the standard) until I hit the rest of the body with Armory Matte Finish... well... It left him kind of foggy and gray. It totally messed with the tone of my red. I'm guessing its the humidity (I just moved to New England from Southern California) but I have no idea how real weather affects spray media. I understand it in the abstract but I dont have my brain wrapped around it enough to know when it is too humid to spray primer or topcoat.

Anyone have tips on topcoats and summer humidity? It wasnt raining or anything. Or maybe the change in tone is normal for a matte finish...?
I'm thinking of not coating any of the others - given that they are for display and not really for play is there any real reason to coat them?
Any thoughts on the pros and cons of coating?

Does that banner happen to have a passage listed on it from the book of Lorgar?

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."
