Strangely enough - Im a Lint IRL.

Thanks for the comments on the banner - it was super easy actually:

1.) download a Cyrillic font for free from the internet
2.) cut and paste some text into Word or whatever word processing program you use
3.) format the text in your new font at 3pt size and set your tabs to just under the width of your banner pole
4.) print it (in this case with a laser printer) so it looks like this

5.) cut it out to size with an exacto and a metal ruler, also scoring the bottom so it looks tattered and well loved
6.) hit it with Gryphon Sepia and Devlan Mud Washes until it looks appropriately aged and weathered
7.) super glue on to banner pole

Its supposed to represent Lorgar's text but its not correct fluff-wise because Lorgar's doodles are supposed to run top to bottom instead of right to left.
What can you do?

This works well for the Word Bearers - but I imagine that it would be easy to use the same process for a range of different projects including black line drawing

I just ordered some transfer paper so Ill try it with that on different surfaces.

Slowly getting there... a bit of progress. I had some work deadlines but now have a little time to focus on these guys again.

Sorry about that pic - I need to work on the whole "focus" thing. Here is a clearer one,

and an even closer one of the aspiring champ - this one shows my shame - MOULD LINES ON THE HORNS.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get them out of the texture of the horns?

Guh, I just read the rules for plasma guns - now I know to avoid them for the next squad. Still I had fun painting the plasma-y bits.

Not to be a jerk or anything but doesn't applying a base coat of the major color just make sense for most SM/CSM armies?

@Gordo it looks great! I cant wait to see the rest of the squad.

Actually I found out that it is easier first paint the trims and afterwards the armour (atleast with my csm).

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Absolutely AMAZING work - I have a fully unassembled CSM army at the moment - well except for Terminators and my Daemon Prince - and you are seriously inspiring me to get these guys done. I have been holding off while I work on painting skills with my other armies and such.

This has been an extremely helpful post for me. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the comments! Very motivating... though sadly, its easier to buy more figures than to paint.

Got another few done - including this plasma fella

I'm doing 12 man squads as per the fluff (evidently the word bearers dont believe in using rhinos for their troops ) and those last two are a pain because I was ready to call it a day when number 10 was done.

Starting to assemble a terminator lord as an HQ - thinking of modeling him up as Erebus.

More slow progress - almost done with 2 squads (12 dudes each) and the HQ is starting to come together... IT'S ALMOST AN ARMY!

Standard bearer WIP - made an undivided standard with the terminator lord's book to make it look WORD BEARER-Y

and I'm finally getting up the guts to do a terminator lord - I'm going to try to make him up as Erebus and try my hand at OSL - first try so not expecting it to look that hot. I've lined up some practice heads to play around though.

They look good but a little too much like khorn , you need another color to break up the red a tad , maybe add more scrolls and pieces of parchment to the marines themselves .

These models are so awesome and inspirational. I think I'm going to 'borrow' the idea about how to do the script on banners.

I know that's what they look like , but they I still think they would look better with more scrolls and parchment pieces through out the army .

Loving the look man. I did exactly the same thing for my Word Bearers in my Lost and the Damned, and I am glad to see that it looks just as good with 12 models as it does with 8.

For digging out the mold lines on the horns I used a rounded microfile. I had picked up a set of little files at RadioShack some 5 years back.

Also, for your sealer issues, try Testors Dullcote. It is a little more expensive perhaps, but I have never had problems with foggy application, even in PA where it is 80%+ humidity every day in the summer. Also, I have issues with the concept of a "moderate amount" and still have not had adverse effects.

To Slann's point, a few impurity seals might not be a bad idea, or some scroll/tabbard bits to sort of mix in some more parchment color into the mix. With little to no brass I don't think it looks terribly like Khorne, but some more prolific use of scrolls and paper will evoke the feel of a more religious army, ala Sisters or GKs.

Looks great so far though!

I am also a Word Bearer player. My squads are ten men with choice to swap out a las cannon with 2nd special weapon. Though I don't remember the WBs not using rhinos, in Dark Disciple they use 4 land raiders.
Another note I have made up a Chosen Coterie using OOP DA vets in robes. It's easier using only those without the Imperial eagle, less work. I enjoy your color scheme, and can't wait to see your Annointed squads.

@scarab/@darkkt/@lint/@shadowbrand - thanks!

@slann - I've been toying with the idea of the parchment on the marines, but havent come up with a way to do it that seems satisfying to me. I'll play around with it and see what develops - the only place I've seen it done in a manner that I really like is on this figure http://demonwinner.free.fr/australia/2005/slayer_sword.php?p=120 - but I think of that as the gold standard for word bearers, I'm about 5000 light years behind that level. Maybe some skaven scrolls will help. Thanks for the thought, I'll play with it.

@Oshunai - I'd love to see pics of what ever you come up with! I haven't done much with it, but I assume the sky is the limit with an ink jet printer.

@Wehrkind - thanks for the tip on the file and the dullcoat - I think i need to get a finer file - my round ones are too big to get in those little grooves without flattening out the detail. I've had some success with brush on sealer from Reaper - the stuff is amazing it goes on almost invisibly with no shine.

@RB, I was just joking about the no rhinos thing - the original fluff for them from the WD/Index Astartes says they structure their units in 12's so I figure their rhinos must be stuffed like clown cars. I got some robed DA bits ready to get converted into chosen. I wish I was faster!

A year later and I've managed to finish up two 12 man squads and a Chaos Lord HQ. At this rate I'll have a complete army sometime in 10 years.

On the plus side I've found a way to use decals to make the Word Bearer's bear the word...
