On tonight's (Monday, 6/22) episode of the Tonight Show, Conan wandered into some gaming store in LA. He joked about a few games/figures (notably Settlers of Catan, iirc) and in the background you could see a Warhammer 40k sign. Figured some of you guys would get a kick out of that.
Anyone been to the store I'm talking about?
EDIT: maybe it was Burbank... I forgot that's where the Tonight Show is filmed.

Chances are, it was the Last Grenadier.

Actually The Tonight Show was moved to Universal Studios while Jay Leno is staying in Burbank.
My guess is that they are in Knight Ware which is across the street from Universal Studios, but I would have to see the store to tell you what shop it is.

Might be that one too, they are both pretty close.

Yup, it was Knight Ware.
I was hesitant to say that is was Knight Ware because I have not been there in a couple of years, and I am surprised that they are still in business.
They have a horrible location with next to no parking.

The Last Grenadier is still open?! That's the store where I bought my first Warhammer figures. I know their store in the Valley closed but I didn't know the Burbank store was still around.

Hey I sortof worked at The Last Grenadier a long time ago. I was hanging out there so much Clyde(the manager at the time) had me helping customers and doing restock. I loved that place.

Yeah, but they moved from their old location they had several years ago. They're still truckin'.

Yeah, they tend to be the typical 'old school' hobby store cliche. Their store is just PACKED with gaming products and they don't place much emphasis on trying to make the place friendly to new players to play in. You walk in the store and maybe someone says hi, but mostly all the long-time employees chill behind the counter and keep to themselves while all the regular customers chill in their little gamer-cliques and hang out.
I do hate the peer-pressure of GW stores sometimes, but say what you will at least the GW stores always work to be very inviting. Random people walking in off the street who are curious about GW games that walk into a GW store will definitely get all the information they're looking for about the hobby. Random people who walk into a place like the Last Grenadier will probably feel rather ostracized and afraid to bother any of the clerks to ask them information on what the heck the store is all about.

Heh. Next time I'm in Burbank shopping at IKEA I'll have to track down the new location. Haven't been there in probably 15 years, glad to know they're still in business. Automatically Appended Next Post: yakface wrote:

Agreed, the fact that my mother-in-law could go to the GW store in the Oakridge mall and find a model* for me speaks volumes for the customer service and helpfulness of GW store employees.
*It was the Dark Angels captain with the winged helmet if anyone was interested. She went in knowing that I played some guys who were green and they managed to find a model for my army.

That's good to know - I thought they'd closed. Is this another move? I know they used to be like a block from the mall. Then they moved 3 or 4 blocks further down the street which is where they were last I was there - maybe 12 years ago.

I go to Last Grenedier (or Happy Grenader as I call it), every once and awhile. The staff is nice, but the place is just dirty and dingy, and It's a bit depressing to be in there.
Knightware is much cleaner, and brighter, and the people there a very nice VERY nice . The parking is ass there, and I haven't been for years. I swear I've seen both the owners on that trekkies star trek documentary. They are good people, I'm glad to hear they're still kickin.
For most of my gaming stuff though I take the trek down to Game Empire! It's clean, bright, and has lots of room. The staff is also a good mix of helpful/friendly without being all 'up in yo face!' Plus they have a bits section, which I am addicted to.
Every so often I do go down to the battle bunker, which is quite a trip, but the staff there is great, and laid back compared to the smaller stores.

I'm glad to hear your MiL had a good experience. My wife won't go to that store anymore after several overly enthusiastic redshirts would hardsell more expensive "better" models. This was 4 years and another manager ago though, it's hopefully a lot better now.
It's a hard balance for gaming stores between the Simpsons comic book guy on one end and used car salesman on the other.

I recommend The Last Grenadier highly. It's kind of a dingy old store, but has tons of character and cool stuff hiding in corners.
KnightWare on the other hand, is an extremely unprofessional operation. There seems to be a day care going on in the back of the store and the employees are pretty strange and difficult to deal with.
