I decided to put together a guard list with the new codex since I've been slowly collecting models and, hell, I may as well make an army out of them. I've played this list a few times and every time my veteran squads have done nothing for the first N turns, then do some nice shooting on turn N+1, and are completely screwed (close combat, shot to death, etc) after that one turn of shooting. One thing I was definitely doing wrong was moving up to objectives on turn 1, I played one game where I left the objectives alone for a few turns and I fared much better, so that may just be what I need to do. Anyways, here's what I'm fielding:

Primaris Psyker (since I'm fielding two PBSs)

2x Psyker Battle Squad with 9 Psykers, Overseer, and Chimera.

2x Veteran Squad with 3 Meltaguns (one in Chimera)
2x Veteran Squad with 3 Plasma Guns, Chimera

Vendetta (carrying a veteran squad)

2x Leman Russ Battle Tank
1x Griffon Heavy Mortar

One thought is to either drop the meltaguns from the Vendetta squad, or one plasma gun from each of the veteran squads, and use the points to put an autocannon into each of the three chimera mounted veteran squads. I'm thinking I should either make room for a second Vendetta (only one doesn't last very long) or just drop it (I picked one up because it was a nice model... but it's a pain to transport so, really, I'm not going to be too upset if it just sits on a shelf and looks pretty.)

I'm not entirely sure what direction I'm trying to take this army, I built it mostly around what I had laying around in my bits box plus a battleforce (and, well, paper chimeras for now) so it was more of a 'What the heck can I shoehorn this into?' list than something designed for superior smackdown. If the list is good and I just need to learn how to play it, great. If not, as long as the bulk of the models stay in the list I'm happy.

Drop plasma guns and take flamers.

I hope you dont get out of your chimeras thats why they die just keep em in there and let em shoot out of it then they wont get the CC death that often.

Oh, they sit inside the chimeras the whole time. It's just that when I move forward to take objectives (starting on turn 1) I don't shoot until I'm within rapid fire range. So I get one nice round of shooting off, and then my chimera gets assaulted. I may keep a squad tied up in assault for a little while that way, but I find that I have a hard time killing things off fast enough once that happens. So, to be fair, it's not that they die the next turn so much as they're out of the game after a single round of shooting. Delaying my move for the objectives *seems* to help, at least in the one game I've tried so far.

Switching to flamers once again pushes me towards moving up to my enemy, which seems to go incredibly poorly for me. Is the idea to only do it to one plasma squad, and just have it available to take out any hordes that make it to my lines?

Ok, Ill try to help

1. 2 PBS in 1500 is way too much, the PBS only works in conjuction with other firepower of which you do not have enough.

2 CCS is your best unit, take it, primaris psyker is crap so unless your in love with him for some kind of fluff reason, drop it.

3 make your vendetta unit HF, 2x Melta, Demo. It makes it lethall against everything.

4 Replace your two naked russes with 2 demolishers and roll them up with your chimeras. Or dump the Griffin and upgrade to 2 Executioners

5 Keep the plasma, give Hull HF to your chimeras.

So something like this

CCS 4x Melta, Chim

PBS, Chim

Melta/Flamer/Demo Vets for the Vendetta

1x Melta Vets Chim
2x Plasma Vets Chim

Vendetta

2x Demolisher with Hull HF

1x Griffin

You dont need to buy any new models and its a much more solid list but Play Agressivley and concenrate your firepower. Do not shoot at lots of different things, shoot at one thing till its dead, then move on.

If you dont like an agressive style of play then try this for a more defensive list with simillar models.

CCS 4x Plasma, Chim Hull HB

PBS, Chim Hull HB

Gunny Harker, 3x Plasma, AC (park him on your oobjective and use his stealth and Incomming to absorb firepower)

1x Vets, 3x Melta, AC Chim HHB
2x Vets 3x Plasma, AC Chim HHB

Vendetta

2x Russ with Hull Las, Plasma Sponson

This is not as solid an army in my opinon, but its much easier to play well with. If you prefer the more conservative approach it might help.

You might also want to consider how you deploy your army. I always used to disperse my troops along my baseline, which meant it was difficult for them to support each other. Recently I have been deploying them in a solid block in a relatively small area and then punching into a small area of the enemy line and I have been doing much better.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

The first option from BigT looks like a good one, or at least it seems to make sense and looks an awful lot like what I'm already fielding. I'd need to do some bit swapping on my models but nothing is painted beyond a tabletop level anyways (hooray for Vallejo Smoke) so cutting some things and painting a few guns isn't a major headache. The demolishers make a hell of a lot more sense than the LRBTs with a list like this anyways.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot and see how it plays out.

Vendettas are pretty much a 1 shot las cannon for 135 points. I'd run another chimera with some kind of squad in it, or I'd take something like a medusa with bastion breacher rounds if you're really looking to take out some armor in a hurry.

I'm trying (although I'm still working on training myself) to use them primarily as fast transports. I haven't entirely written off yanking the lascannons off and reverting the model back into a Valkyrie, but I'm trying to get the rest of the army to work before I tackle that question. It's pretty much buying a 75 point upgrade to a Chimera, although you could certainly make a case that you could spend those 75 points somewhere else and get better results (an armored sentinel for something that doesn't completely collapse in assault would be nice for example.)

I took BigT's suggestion and put it into a list. It's pretty much exactly what he said, although I decided to take the Griffon out to swap another Chimera for a Vendetta. (I still need to buy my Chimeras so picking up an extra Vendetta instead isn't a huge problem.) The Griffon would be the only non-mobile portion of my army, and that just didn't seem like a great idea, especially since it's not really strong enough to significantly alter my opponent's plans. Hopefully with a pair of Vendettas I should see a little more utility out of them, although I'll probably proxy (with, hell, I don't know what) the second one before I drop $60US on it.

This looks like a pretty solid list, 2 vendettas are going to be alot more effective than 1.
