What the title says really. I've got two Vultures and three Valks that I've painted in the lovely Vallejo Middlestone for my desert themed Elysians. Flat paint is lovely et al but I want to add some weathering to the aircraft. Not as heavy as tanks though, these are skimmers not bumper car tanks!

Here's a crappy PIP of my Vulture:

I'm a novice painter btw so any easy to use tips are much appreciated!

Try Drybrushing that mark instead, I'm sure you know what drybrushing is but just incase,

Dip your brush in, dap off the excess paint in some cloth or what evr and apply.

To get your desitred affect keep a little pore paint towards the front of the craft then lighter. that is for smoke weathering, which I presume is the affect you were after.

Hope that helped !

Use vallejo smoke to do some streaks.

and vallejo black + water to paint the exhausts so they look burnt.

@Wolf: I know what drybrushing is, I'm not that wet behind the ears! I drybrushed the engines and metals to get that nice effect.

@Floets: I'm sticking to English, sorry. Last thing I want is for people to start speaking German to us because they think Dutch is a sub dialect of Deutsch! I've thought about chipping but I want to keep it simple, as said before this is an aircraft and not a tank that bumps and grinds through and over everything.

@Luna: I've heard a lot of good about those special Vallejo effects bottles, I'll have to look into that one if it makes my painting life any easier. And I've thought about doing the whole heat display on the rear exhaust (Asurman blue wash, drybrush bestial brown and finally chaos black at the end) but I'm torn between keeping her clean or dirtying her up a bit in the rear.

Ah, then in moderation . Perhaps something like this: Im never a fan of GW's shinny paint chips , so i keep these pictures close for inspiration.

May I suggest a simple dark wash over the final project? Just thin out some darker paint (black would probably be best) and apply it lightly to all the parts painted Middle Stone. Be sure to paint in the direction that the wind would be traveling with long strokes across the piece. It's rather simple, but the paint will flow smoothly into the crevasses between the armor plates in addition to giving a well-used, windswept look. I use it on model airplanes and it works wonderfully. I even keep a jar f black wash for just such occasions.

Everything's under control, situation normal... uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?

I used to know a guy that did military models back in the 1980s, he used to use his x-acto to shave graphite off a pencil, makeing a lil pile of grey\black powder, he would add it to a matte varnish or other suitable binder and brush it on areas. Very cheap and very effective, as I recall.

Luckily I have some spare Valkyrie parts left over from the conversion kit. I'll paint those up in Middlestone as a test bed for the washes.

On areas like the nuts and bolts, an effective method is to use a pencil (a reasonably soft one) to rub around the edges - gives a good worn metalic look without any major difficulty.

I really like the way it looks now though - that is excellent with just the washes!

There are a lot of really good weathering techniques involving oil paints that the military modelers use to get some impressive results on aircraft and tanks. I also recall a Valk tutorial done on one of the blogs that used this method (sorry no link handy right now, will see if I can dig it up and post it later).

Just remember that on a valk, a flying vehicle, all of the oil drips and stains will be “blown” to the rear of the vehicle. I have seen people use a drop of watery black wash and use a little compressed air (or a full lung full of air if you don’t have a compressor handy) to cause some nice looking streaks.

I've been wanting to try a pencil or graphite stick to do metal chips, but I'm afraid it will wipe off and look bad when I use the model in games. same with pastels and powder pigmets. or would a spray varnish be enough to hold it down? You can also buy graphite powder, I don't know where but I've seen it before. I remember one dad was using it to grease up the wheels on his kid's pinewood derby back when I was a cub scout.. like 25 years ago..

Yes - a sealer should be sufficient to hold it all in place. No problem with mine so far, and I have used a simple 2B pencil along edges...

One easy method of weathering that works really well for both tank and flyers is get some white, black and brown oil paints and apply them along the seams of the wings and then use Turpinoid or any turpentine variant and with a wide brush pull the colors backward along the wings, creates great looking streaks and if you mess up they can be eliminated with more turpentine. Here is an amazing tutorial showing the technique http://akaranseth.over-blog.com/pages/Step_by_Step__Valkyrie_Imperial_Guard-1335315.html
