Boosting Ultramarine Biker
|
Not exactly new news (June 2nd), but I just found out this past weekend and was totally ecstatic.
10 USD for a great PSone classic, a much better price than the $80+ listings found on ebay. Downloadable for both the PS3 and PSP console.
Just wanted to let ya'll know....yay.

At this point it's only a matter of time till they make a remake. Square knows everybody wants one and they're like Capcom when it comes to re-releasing old stuff these days and/or milking a franchise.

I would agree with you on that they should and will. Even though...while having heard tons of rumors about a remake, I have never seen anything official from square enix. I believe the best I could find was a small quip about some of the staff working on a re-make in their spare time, but nothing serious.

Out of all the FF, 7 Has dated the worst and is in desperate need of a Graphical Overhaul, if not a total rework.

Its because of that demo/remake of the intro for the game to show off what the PS3 was capable of, which started the fans raving over the idea in large numbers.
Before then it was mainly wishful thinking by the few because Capcom did it with Resi.
I'd probably snap it up though, probably make me consider buying a PS3 if it was exclusive as well.

I think it's highly probable. Square-Enix did a complete remake of FF3 and 4 for Nintendo DS and I lost count how many times they re-released I and II.

as much as i enjoyed 7, i played through it doing pretty much everything back in the day, so i'm finding myself unable to get all that excited.
i'd much rather they produce some new games sooner

I think it's great news thoug I must agree with the comment about the game not having aged gracefully.
Even FF6 (3 in the Western world) has survived better. It has a cartoony top down look but it simply works and still looks good.
The 3d effects of FF7 on the other hand, while very nice when first released, really have you wondering if they couldn't upgrade the blockiness.
Still, I'll probably download it.

Whilst I will agree the 3d map exploration hasn't ages well the battle screen is still as fantastic as the day it was bought out, perhaps if SE had done a HD version for the PS3 download like Capcom did with Street Fighter 2 it would have been a little better.
Still lets face it, its not for the amazing graphics you play FF7, its the brilliantly written story, awesome characters and a battle system that you make as easy or as hard as you like (lets face it using materia, gaining the triple AP slot weapons etc can create a lot of messing with item menus etc to get the best load out for each character).

I think the combat could use a bit of twitching. The one thing I enjoyed in FFX was how you basically have everyone in the fight, which would work great for FF7 since there are also a few sequences where the party splits up.

Things in FFVII that haven't aged well:
Characters
Story
Graphics
Gameplay
Change all those and you might have decent game.

There I disagree entirely. Apart from the graphics, but lets face it, it was 12 years ago since the game came out.

I must as well. It is a great game and the most well know. The only thing needed is a graphics overhaul and a few gameplay tweaks

Most "don't well know", most look back with rose colored glasses. Generally people who's first Final Fantasy was FFVII think it is the bees knees but those who played other ones before that tend to overlook it as they had something better to compare it to (ie almost anything). While a decent RPG, when put into the larger oeuvre of the FF series it comes up as mediocre.

Just to let you all know, the download size for Final Fantasy VII is 1349 MB. That makes your standard 2 GB Memory Stick for the PSP pretty much unusable after you've loaded it on there. Even if VII hasn't aged gracefully at all (In fact, to the point where I can hardly bring myself to play it anymore), the Materia system is still one of the deepest mechanics in any RPG. That's about the only accolade I can still give it in the game-saturated world of 2009.

Actually my first one was FF5, I still rate FF7 as the best, the job system was quite deep, but as Crysoar said the Materia system is just so deep, whilst I was playing Mass Effect and fiddling with my guns upgrades and special issue ammo for almost 3 hours to get my chars just the way I liked them. I still thought this has nothing on the Materia system.

FFV was released in Europe (and the US) long after FFVII so how did you do that? In fact it was never released on it's original system outside of Japan.

Perhaps he is Japanese. Perhaps he Played a Rom before Picking up FF7, perhaps he didn't play any FF until recently and Played 5 before 7?

Well, I have to admit that FFVII was the first game I played though I got into roleplaying games a few years before that.
Still, what I enjoyed most about it I guess was the setting. The overworld wasn't that interesting, but everything in Midgar was awesome.

Perhaps. It isn't an indictment or some accusation, I am just curious to the context.
I didn't realize it was a PSP download. I thought it was an emulation to be played on the PS3. That is pretty cool.

Actually I had an American friend that lived over here for a few years, when he was living over there he got all the games on import, so we traded SNES' for a while so I could play these awesome games that I must see, tbh I had to have him with me so he could read the Japanese too me.
I can understand your curiosity, he did the same things for me with games like Chrono Trigger etc etc basically all the good RPGS that didnt get released over here.
