Whilst I will agree the 3d map exploration hasn't ages well the battle screen is still as fantastic as the day it was bought out, perhaps if SE had done a HD version for the PS3 download like Capcom did with Street Fighter 2 it would have been a little better.

Still lets face it, its not for the amazing graphics you play FF7, its the brilliantly written story, awesome characters and a battle system that you make as easy or as hard as you like (lets face it using materia, gaining the triple AP slot weapons etc can create a lot of messing with item menus etc to get the best load out for each character).

Change all those and you might have decent game.

There I disagree entirely. Apart from the graphics, but lets face it, it was 12 years ago since the game came out.

Generally people who's first Final Fantasy was FFVII think it is the bees knees but those who played other ones before that tend to overlook it as they had something better to compare it to (ie almost anything). While a decent RPG, when put into the larger oeuvre of the FF series it comes up as mediocre.

Actually my first one was FF5, I still rate FF7 as the best, the job system was quite deep, but as Crysoar said the Materia system is just so deep, whilst I was playing Mass Effect and fiddling with my guns upgrades and special issue ammo for almost 3 hours to get my chars just the way I liked them. I still thought this has nothing on the Materia system.

Actually I had an American friend that lived over here for a few years, when he was living over there he got all the games on import, so we traded SNES' for a while so I could play these awesome games that I must see, tbh I had to have him with me so he could read the Japanese too me.

I can understand your curiosity, he did the same things for me with games like Chrono Trigger etc etc basically all the good RPGS that didnt get released over here.
