Are devestators worth the points anymore with the predator being so cheap? If so when is a good time to use em? VS tanks? hordes?

also, when it says "up to 4 marines can replace weapon with..." and give a cost, is that per "heavy weapon" of the cost to upgrade all 4 weapons?

The only Dev squad I ever consider fielding is 4 X Missile launcher.

Its cheap, and it does a great job at killing hordes or transports.

Nope, Devs are utterly Pointless.

Need Anti Tank? Take a Godhammer Pattern or two Lascannon Preds

Need Anti Infanty? Take a Crusader or 2 Dakkapreds (woops, I mean 3)

Need anything Useful? Take anything but Devastators.

Its unfortunate but they are decidedly too expensive for their usefulness (now if they had gotten free Heavy Bolters, Missile Launchers, or Multi-meltas like Tacticals...)

Agreed. I didn't start playing 40k until just after 5th editions release, and I always found the SM devastators to be way over-costed. Most other ways of getting those heavy weapons are cheaper and just as effective, or at least more cost-effective.

To answer your last question the cost is per weapon.

In case it was too hard to guess from the "costs way too much" crowd of responses...

I like my Devs standing in formation with the rest of the battle company. In the field I bring tanks or speeders.

The nice thing about Devs (and the reasopn they are expensive) is that they are tough and don't get stunned/shaken. Any Vehicle can be destroyed with the first shot that penetrates the armor, while a Dev squad in Cover is a tough unit to out shoot, as they are Meqs and there guns keep firing. I'm a Fan of Missile Launchers and Heavy Bolters for Devs.

Don't forget the ability of Devastator Squads to provide a Space Marine army with up to three shooting units (two Combat Squads, one Razorback). Regular Space Marines even get to shoot one weapon at BS5!

all i can say is EWWWW....

so its like 150pts for a dev squad with HB's or RL's...
But only 120 pts for two predators? and if you upgrade them your at the same cost but with more shot?

Why is Games Workshop so cruel?

Devastators can also be armed with Plasma Cannons...

i guess if you put em in a razorback you gain some flexibility, and its a good point about them being harder to hit and such, plus you get a few more shots of specific equip

I always prefer infantry in Cities of Death games, (I never roll good for my vehicle's difficult terrain and they end up getting immobilized...) but otherwise stick with preds.

Devastators are way too expensive for their utility outside Cities of Death games, and are pretty dubious even within such games. They also take a Heavy Support slot that can be used for Dreadnoughts, Whirlwinds, Land Raiders, and Predators. Definitely a "pass" for me.

Devastators are also one of few Marine units that are only effective in one phase of the game.

Devs with 4 rocket launchers or 4 heavy bolters are fine. A 10 man squad of anti-infantry fury is a bit more durable than a 13/11/10 tank.

The above are reasons I kind of like the Devastators...

But I still won't take them. Instead I take Land Speeders with Heavy Flamers and Multi-meltas.... or rather I will once I get my Salamanders army built up.

I've gotten my quad lascannon dev squad out in a couple of small (no str-d) apoc games and they did quite well.

No use in a regular 40K game (too expensive) or in a big apoc game (wiped out too easily).

Right, but is it more durable then 3 of them, since that's the point costs...

Jack

EDIT: more like 2-2.5 really I guess.

Only one Force Organization Slot to three of them, since that's the availability cost.

It's like how a Land Raider Phobos with a Multi-Melta is equivalent in points to two Predator Annihilators, but takes up half as many Force Organization Chart slots.

Indeed, and I do tend to like using all my heavy slots....

But I still tend to leave devastators at home for better options, be they preds, vindicators or whirlwinds. I can easily get the weapons the dev squad would bring with some other force slot then heavy, where is there are several unique heavy choices.
