Five pages on a huge turd like Transformers 2. This thread probably won't get five posts

But Michael Mann's new film hit today. It is mathematically about a googol better than every other non-Pixar film released this summer. Some would consider it slow or boring, but that is because they are morons, and they deserve Stephen Sommer's GI Joe.

Anyways, brilliantly shot period piece about John Dillinger during the Depression. If you like a movie that asks a little bit of you and pays it off, this is your film.

Mann is probably my favourite director, I can't wait for this film.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. Ebert's also saying its a good flick. This is first on the agenda sans sobering up after the great 2009 July 4 Frazzled "Guns, Beef, and Booze!" Block party.

Honestly, if my wife and I get the chance to see a movie this summer, it'll probably be Transformers and not this one.

My wife and I used to (pre-child) go to the movies a lot, including a lot of foreign and independent films. But now if we get to see a movie (happens maybe once every six months as we have few babysitter options), we mostly look for something big, dumb and escapist. I think we just don't have any need for thoughtful dramas right now given our busy lives and family crises we've dealt with the past year. I suppose we've just had our fill of drama already. We still read intelligent books. But if we're going to get a very rare night out, it's likely going to be something big and dumb that looks good on the big screen. We're weirdly of one mind about this.

Anyway, the point is that you can call people stupid for seeing Transformers if you must, but not everyone's looking for (or wanting) a subtlely crafted period piece every time out.

I'm not telling you what film to watch and I understand the need to crash out. But it's a Michael Mann film, and the guy makes good looking movies. It's got Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in longcoats and hats wielding Thompsons. It'll be just plain cool.

I saw it last night. Definitely a good movie. I was hoping to learn more about Dillinger's past and what made him into what he was, but this movie focuses more on the badassery of robbing banks and such.

The second to last scene (outside the theater) was very well done in my opinion.

I didnt know Michael Mann did this one, so that moves it up my list. Johnny Depp AND Christian Bale already had it pretty high on that list anyway

But, for those that dont realise some of his work- Last of the Mohicans, Heat, Collateral, The Kingdom, Hancock, to name a few.

Metro got it bang on IMHO. It looks nice but there is no real meat to it, nor do you actually care about either Bale or Depp. Both play very dull characters and there is non of the turmoil and conflict between them that made DeNiro and Pacinos characters so memorable in Heat. The shootout in the middle is fairly decent but the ending is a total fizzle.

This is proably the years biggest dissapointment for me in that I know the director is capable of so much more. Heat and Collateral are 2 of my favorite films and I was hoping Mann would prove that Miamai Vice was just a rare miss. Fraid to say he didn't.

You found The Insider and Heat a little mindless, eh?

To clarify, for The Kingdom and Hancock he was only producing.

I liked it as a period piece, but Depp and Bale seemed like they were just putting in their time at work. It kind of reminded me of the cartoon where the sheepdog and the wolf trudge up to the time clock, and it's like "Morning Frank, Morning George", then they go to their starting points and spend the day being traditional adversaries, then when they time out its "G'night Frank, G'night George," They were both really intense, driven individuals but they probably were just as lacking in personality in real life as they were on the big screen.

Tarantino is just a washed up hack nowadays. His Opus was Pulp Fiction, and it has been a very rapid downhill slope from there.

Saw it last night, it was ok not great and not terrible. Slightly overshadowed by Bronson which I saw the night before but worth ten 'Revenge of the fallen'.
