I've been whining and bitching about orks a lot lately. Mostly about their abysmal anti-tank. Here's what I think the orks need for an otherwise excellent book hamstrung by lack of anti-tank. And no, I don't think it's a deliberate weakness, I think it's just poor book writing:
Deffrolla - can affect vehicles
Zzap Gun - rolls 2d6 for penetration, autohits
Flashgits - "Blasta" upgrade makes shootas melta on d6 roll of 1
Kustom Mega-blasta - melta, ap1
There. Now orks have some antitank. Makes the deffrolla flavorful and unambiguous, restores the zzapgun to what it once was, give the useless flashgits a purpose, and give you a reason to take a kmb, when there previously wasn't. Unlike guard, marines, and everybody else, none of these weapons are that plentiful or "spammable", so orks aren't going to suddently become tank-busting superstars, but it makes certain unusued units (KMB kanz, flashgits, meks w/ kmb's, zzap batteries, zzapgunz on battlewagons) useful.

Well I thought similarly to you at first, but after playing orks alot they DO have some brilliant anti tank power.
The most notable is boys and PKs. An assault on an enamy vehicle is automaticly assumed to attack the rear, and every boy is str 4 when charging wich obliterates Leman Russes and other IG vehicles. If the vehicle is toupher, a single nob w 3 PK attacks will do the trick at strength 9.
Also ZZaap guns are different now yes, but they are still quite powerful cause they can now still do str 10 on an 11 or 12 result, meaning it has a 1/6 to still do a str 10 hit. Also grots get a BS 3 so batteries of ZZZaap guns can deal mega hurt. Also weirdboys have a 1/6 to get an auto hitting, str 10 AP 1. (two weirdboys or a warp head will give you a 1/3)
Lootas have 36in str 7. That could deal damage to vehicles with armor all the way up to 13! Put two squads of them in flanking positions and get a side armor shot.
Basicly back to what I said at the start, tanks are always doomed when they get into close combat with orks. Infiltrating some komandos (or moving them on the board behind enemy lines with snickrot) will get up to tanks great. As will Stormboys (if they survive that long) and warbikes. I am very pleased w the anti tank ability of the new codex.

Not to mention that there is a little thing called TANK BUSTERS... I think that they just might server a purpose... as others have said with the new shift to mech the glory hogs rule wont hurt them that much as you will have plenty of targets for them.

At range i also seem to have poor luck with them, but have you ever gotten them in close combat? They will eat apart ANY vehicle, land raiders and warmachines included.

In close combat, they do eat any tank....but there's a problem with that;
If you disembark your tank bustas, charge a vehicle and explode it, you're going to lose a few tank-bustas. Then...you're going to immediately get shot at and charged by anything/everything by someone playing a mechanized list. Tankbustas have a life expectancy of...one tank.
Their rokkits don't scare anyone.
