Ok, I'm starting up my Imperial Guard army and I want to design the entire army with a certain concept in mind. I havn't thought up the fluff for it yet but I assume somewhere out there the Space Wolf gene found it's way into humans and I want to make an Imperial Guard army out of these long lost cousins of the Space Wolves. Conversion wise, I've got tons of head's from Space Wolf boxes and wolf cloaks from boxes of Fantasy Empire knights which have the cloaks for the White Wolf option. I'm thinking of adding spikes to the hands of some of my larger men like ogryns so it looks like they have claws (wolverine style). For the normal men I'm thinking of combining Catachan bodies with space wolf heads. Finally, I wanted to add some kind of wolf imagery to my vehicles such as a wolf on a leash beside the vehicle or a wolf head around the barrel of a battle cannon.

That's as much as my mind can come up with so I'm looking to you guys for any other suggestions. I've got tons of bits from Fantasy Chaos and Empire and I can get some Undead from my friend. In addition, I have bits from 40k Daemonhunters/Space Wolves/Imperial Guard. I'm really curious about conversion idea's for characters like Marbo, Creed and Al'Rahem. I'm also curious about any painting idea's, something that would look space wolfish, maybe blue/white something with snow bases. Any background fluff suggestions would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The only real problem I see with your idea, is the head swap. Your going to have to shave the ball on the bottom of the necks down ALOT for it to fit on catachans bodies. After that, they still look just a little large as far as scae goes. I know this simply because, I use Catachans for my necromunda gang, and my leaders head is a SM sgt head with the mouth respirator thing on it.It fits pretty good after grinding most of it off, but still the head looks ajust a little large. Bu really I think if you bulk up the shoulders and put those cloaks on them, you might no notice.
I had to put some home made shoulder pads on my gang leader to take some size away from the head. God luck, and the idea isa pretty cool one. Your going to get SM jerk heads telling you, that the gene idea would never happen lol. So prepare for that

I'm confused about the concept, to be frank.

Is it going to be Marines-but-not-Marines or is it going to be a Guard regiment that was raised from Fenris?

Instead of the space wolf gene why not do abhumans of a slightly feral canine variety that have been inducted into the guard? You can still include the wolf imagery as heraldry of the clan or tribe or however you want to suit it to your fluff, as for heads i agree with KingCracker I think they will look a little large on catachan bodies, how is your GS work? It's not too difficult to sculpt hair and some sideburns/beard/moustache combos to the catachan heads, you may need to file or shave off the bandanas etc. or there's the flagellant heads, they're a good basis not sure how they scale up to catachans though. Anyways just a few suggestions for you to consider. I may have to include a couple of these guys in the inquisitor retinue I'm doing Can't wait to see what you produce.

It's going to be an Imperial Guard army with a canine flair. It'd work if they come from Fenris, maybe they are people rejected by the Space Wolf recruiters so they joined the Imperial Guard. Hopefully at some point I can run a team of my Imperial Wolves allied to some friends Space Wolves.

If the Space Wolf head's don't fit I'll try the White Wolf heads from the Empire or I can try out the flagellant idea. I'm pretty good with normal infantry GS conversions but I get lost with vehicle modifications. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do with the Leman Russ' I already have and the Chimera's I'm getting.

The only fluff problem I see is that Fenris doesn't really raise Guard regiments, as far as I've seen from books.

I could see something like a wolfpack themed army, with wolf insignias and pelts sure.

Fluff wise why dont you just say they are the regular People who give themselves up to the space wolves to command the ships and navigate etc. Reading the Space Wolf Books they are noted in there, same people as the wolves but just space marine upgrades.

Conversion wise, you'd be hard pressed using the marine heads, the bulky bodies of catachans wouldn't be too bad, but personally you'd have to fill in the uniform a bit, make it less catachan like, otherwise it would be an easy pick.

Ok. Just some info for you that you may not know.

The Space Wolves take humans and make them Space Marines. The humans on that planet that don't become Space Wolves become IG. So the only thing different between the two is the Gene Seed. The Gene Seed doesn't pass traits to offspring of the Space Marines. If they did then the Empire would have issues. Just think of all the Chaos Space Marines and if they could pass off traits! Chaos would just bread their Space Marines and nothing would stop them.

As for you. You can just play the humans that live on that planet. They will still have the same hair styles and same ways of thinking. They just were not tough enough to be a Space Wolf.

Well, i've read all the space wolves books and never once is it mentioned the ones not chosen become ig ... They just live feudally warring over the extremely limted, annually changing land masses that emerge from the sea, after their old ones sink, with the SW choosing the most crazy bat$#%^ insane ones to try out lol ...

Um no just no failed aspirants or space wolf candidates that don't become space marines ether become chapter serfs or are turned in to thralls for the iron priests they do not become guard.
As far as I know the only space marine planet that have guard units is Mcragge that is because ultramar is a huge area of space and they can't all become space marines.

Screw that. There is NO OFFICIAL CANON, right? If we have to have Women of the Adeptus Astartes, then dammit, we have an Imperial Guard regiment of failed Space Wolf recruits on the planet.

Deal with it. We have to with the Femmarines.

Every planet in the Imperium has it's own group of IG. I did not say failed or anything else. It's the price you pay for being a citizian.

As for reading all the books about Space Wolves....that has nothing to do with the IG part of it.

I don't see any real fluff problems, aside from SW genes spreading to the general population. Just drop that line and you're fine.

Well you can just drop that line but you then break everything in the 40k universe. If GENE traits got passed onto offspring then there would be no need to have a gene seed. The gene seed must be placed into a human so that they take on a new form. If you notice that they remove the Gene from dead and dying marines.

I'll repeat the Chaos point. If the traits could be passed on then Chaos would have won by now.

Except for the fact that the entire planet, barring the Wolves' training area and outposts, is at a Viking/medieval era of technology and untouched by the Imperium other than the recruiting Iron Priests?

The IG take from all planets that have humans. That is the price of citizianship. As for Vikings on the planet.......right. The people there know about space ships and they know how to talk. The Space Wolves are not a secret society there. They are well known. Is it a rough planet? Yes. It is not the most advanced culture in the Imperium but it isn't cave man times either. The Guard still need people with the fighting skills that the people of this planet have.

The gene seed does not change the look of the people that have time implanted. The only difference in the faces is the size. The gene seed does make you grow.

Er...actually, they don't know about spaceships. The Thunderhawks are considered mystical flying machines that convey the slain or the Chosen to sit at the side of Russ for the Wolftime.

I'm fairly sure there's other background too, about Marine recruiting worlds being hands off for Guard foundings, with Ultramar being a rare exception.

Actually the people know NOTHING of the spaceships. They know of the space marines only like vikings back in the day knew about valkryies. To the people of Fenris, the Wolves are the chosers of the slain, they bring those worthy to a valhalla like place.

And you are all a bit confused about guard. Guard are founded as part of a warmasters or other high sector's command to raise troops for interplanetary conquest or to bolster the defense of a world. PDF are the local defenders that are constantly on duty, and are rarely, if ever called to leave their homeworld to fight on another planet.

You modelling concept is sound, your fluff concept is lackluster and unresearched. Just do them as an abhuman guard regiment, there are plenty of those floating around

Ok just make your guard the way you were thinking, minus the gene seed. Since for some stupid reason your thread has turned into a flame war. Its your army mate, if you want to take my little ponies and use them for dire wolves that count as guardmen with lasguns sticking out of their noses, just do it! And I say good luck to you

I'm going to disagree as well. This is wrong.

Every planet with a sizeable human presence is expected to contribute regiments to the Imperial Guard. The exceptions to this are things like forge worlds & knight worlds (which are run by the AdMech) and Space Marine recruitment planets.

You won't find a Fenrisian IG regiment. For the same reason, you won't find regiments from Nocturne or Deliverance. The exception to this is Ultramar and the Ultramarines - apparently it's such a well-run little utopia that they can provide IG regiments AND supply a chapter.

Of course, you're free to make Space Wolf IG if you want, nobody can stop you, but if you want them to fit with the existing fluff there's a few things you could do - like abhumans! Ever so sightly mutated abhumans with big teeth, from a completely different planet. No SW link. Or maybe IG from a planet NEAR fenris, that obviously has been influenced by the nearby presence of such a famous legion.

You know I noticed the flame war starting when I came back to check out my thread but I thought I'd just let it be cause I got some nice idea's from those who cared (marauder bodies are a good idea, their big but no problems with heads anymore, maybe put them on normal guard legs / flagellants are also good idea).

But christ guy's you gotta chill on the fluff stuff. If there is one thing I will never do it is reading any Warhammer books and deciding that some halfwit authors work, who cant design an environment so he instead uses that of a table top miniature game, can dictate what the rules are for the miniatures I pay for with my money. No F*ing way.

I get the Gene Seed dilemma, so fine, its gone, no gene seed...big deal, their just normal humans but they have long hair, claws, fangs and they sniff their butts.

Back to conversions, I'm thinking about trying a dogsled kind of thing on my vehicles. Chimera being pulled by 6 wolves? Don't tell me how it wont work in the World of Warhammer, just tell me what you think or if you got any other crazy idea's.

For a conversion, I think you dont have to neccessarily turn it into a chariot, but maybe do side and front armor for a growling wolf or the like.

Also, something that would actually be pretty sweet for you, instead of Ogryn models, use wulfen models cause those are very nice ones you dont see very often anymore

So true, fluff is fine if you like it and if you dont like it and wanna build your hive-tyrant in a bumpercar that should be fine too.

I think I could manage a Wulfen ---> Ogryn conversion. Take off their space marine backpacks and maybe mold a winter cloak over their power armor and give em some respectable Ogryn like gun. Maybe call em Wolfgryns...

@Darkwulf : Imperial Guard have bikes?

But Snowscooters is a good idea anyway. I really like these:

http://bobpanda.de/warhammer/projects/warthog-landspeeder/mobile-infantry-gallery/

But I don't want to be a complete mooch so I think if I ever make these for my friends Space Wolf army I'd cut off all the wheels and put snowmobile treads on the back and skis on the front.

You gave me another idea cause I was thinking of what the Imperial Guard have that comes close to bikes and I could only think of rough riders. So I decided instead of Rough Riders on horses, put them on wolves instead and tada Wolf Riders.
