Hi all,
after realizing how epic fail the games workshop spray for white is, I'm wondering if anybody has had any experience with Tamiya spray paints? preferably grey and white, thanks in advanced since I'm going to bed after this thread so late replies (but important!)

I've used Tamiya PS8 green spray for my Salamanders, it comes out a bit bright and shinybut a green wash solves that problem nicely.

I've used the white, a tan and a black spray by them. Bought them all in one hit as they were cheaper than GW. The colours are good but I found that they really didn't adhere well to bare plastic. I would advise applying a primer before using them as it will just fall off at the slightest touch otherwise. Imagine my horror when I saw the paint crumbling off of my tank tracks after spending two hours painting them. Not a happy bunny.

Tamiya Spray Paints are by far the best spray paints I have used, and I use these over any other sprays. For undercoating you need to use the Super Fine Base Coat (comes in Grey / White / Black). Once dry your undercoated model feels as smoot as velvet in your hand.

I also use the Tamiya Matt varnish and this gives an outstanding finish. I consider myself painting to a 'proffessional' standard and have been using Tamiya paints for sometime now (see my stuff in the gallery). I water down my GW washes and Foundation paints with Tamiya thinners and use their base colours on my Imperial Guard tanks as the colour range is far more realistic.

Tamiya Paints gets a BIG tumbs up from me!

A bit of everything really....... Titanicus, Bolt Action, Cruel Seas, Black Seas, Blood Red Skies, Kingdom Death, Relic Knights, DUST Tactics, Zombicide the lit goes on.............

Thanks for all your replies, which is extremely helpful, I'm going to get the Super fine base coat (in grey/white).
another noobie question tho relating to the Matt varnish? what does it do to help protect the models?

Cheers in advanced.

Any varnish protects your model by forming a tough coat on top of the paint to prevent wear. Polyurethane varnish also makes the model airtight and prevents oxidation, though it is subject to yellowing from sunlight.

I'm not convinced oxidation is a problem as I've had bare metal figures sitting around unvarnished for 20 years and most of them have shown no change, though a few did. Plastic doesn't oxidise anyway.

You can get varnish in matt, gloss and various satin (semi-gloss) finishes.

Most figures I spray gloss, then paint or spray a second coat of the finish I want.

I like to use satin on vehicles and matt on infantry.

It always seems that the gloss varnish is tougher than the mat. That's why most people spray a coat of gloss followed by mat or satin. especially for mini's that are going to get a lot of handling during play. Display pieces don't need the gloss.

I have used several colors so far for mostly base colors over grey primer. Covers extremely well and great quality. For a dollar or 2 more that a cheap can of spray its worth it however if you had a huge army to paint one color it could get expensive.
