Just wondering what folks views on body alteration would be if technology allowed for you to transform into pretty near on anything you want, inc cluding perm Skin colour, hair colour etc. Such as the a varient of the tech in Star trek where they disguise themselves as another race biologically.
I ask as my wife has said for a long time if the tech was possible she'd be an Elf, no if's not buts, and I'm wondering would anyone else be willing to go that far?
For myself, not sure, I'd love to have compleatly black eyes to freak folks out (ala Lita Alexander in B5) but in a future where folks could walk past me looking like an Orc, Elf or worse, maybe that wouldn't be all that spectacular.

I've started to see young guys in my office with Inca style 'orejone' ear plugs. Lip plugs have got to be next, and maybe those long hoop neck things.
Of course I think it's all nonsense, but that's only because I am middle-aged and middle-class. No doubt people will do all kinds of things once the technology is available.
I wouldn't do something just because of fashion, but I would certainly get my eyes fixed up and useful things like that if I could.

If I could make my hair some crazy color so I wouldn't have to keep buying Manic Panic to dye it all the time I would totally do it. I love crazy colored hair.
Besides that, I'm surprisingly happy with myself. Maybe if I could get tattoos that I could make disappear/reappear at will so that I could get a respectable job yet still do what I wanted to.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

As for me unless you're talking Bionic Man kinda crop I'd probably stay as I am. Even then I might have to turn down the Bionic man stuff, I'd get into waaaay to much trouble with it lol.

I was always brought up to never modify my body in any way. No tattoos or piercings. Nothing really behind it, my father always justified it like this "If you get a ton of tattoos you can't hide, die your hair a crazy color, or gauge your ears it's like hanging a big 'DO NOT HIRE ME' sign around your neck". I sometimes hate that he is right, but hey I'd only ever probably get a tattoo or two but then it's easier for cops to identify you and people with tattoos usually end up looking like trash anyway.

Says you. But, everyone has their own opinions.
Personally, I think that a really well done tattoo is like a piece of art. It speaks dramatically for the person who has it. Of course, I'm not into getting tattoos for the sake of getting them. They have to mean something to me.

I agree with this when it comes to really well-done tattoos. Some of them are absolutely awesome. The problem is, there are lots and lots of people who have tattoos that are really poorly done. No matter what sort of meaning is ascribed to it (or not), a crappy tattoo can't help but look like crap.

True, very true. That's why I have spent the last 2 years searching for a shop that can do my memorial tattoo. It's for a friend who died 4 years ago at the age of 16. I will not accept anything less than 'god-like' artwork.

I agree that tattoos can be incredible pieces of art, but I've never seen a tattoo in real life that was a piece of art. I usually see tattoos on people making my subs at subway or getting turned down for jobs or told that registration is filled for their program of study because they didn't register properly. The tattoos they have are usually stupid stuff too, thuglife in illegible scripts, tribal bands, japanese characters on people's necks. I've seen tattoos on television and the internet that I'd definitely consider artwork. But I'm still waiting to spot one IRL.
