The tattoos they have are usually stupid stuff too, thuglife in illegible scripts, tribal bands, japanese characters on people's necks.
I've seen tattoos on television and the internet that I'd definitely consider artwork. But I'm still waiting to spot one IRL.
Peoples tattoos are a matter of their personal expresion, and while I'll agree with you that some of the work I've seen is gak, some is amazing.

Kids don't listen to this statement. There may be the occasional situation where this occurs but you will not see visible tattoos in pretty much any environment where you need to wear a tie.
if you're going to have tattoos you'd better have them where they can easily be covered.

I'll agree with you as well Frazz,if one is going into a "suit & tie "line of work then visable tats are almost always a no-no,my point however was that having tattoos does not lock you into a life of flipping burgers.

Ah, Frazz... You're showing your inexperience, buddy. The idea that having a tattoo will reduce or eliminate your chances for a job are anitquated and suppositional, at best.
I've got a half dozen and they've NEVER gotten in my way... and I work for a bank (very few industries are more conservative).
Since having tattoos, I've worked as a restaurant manager and for two banks in varying positions, including customer facing positions as well as management. The worst I ever experienced was having to cover the actual tattoo with a bangdage while in rest. mgmt one night when the AC went out & I wanted to roll up my sleeves.
LOL The customers thought it was a burn and, when I told them what it was, they ALL told me they'd rather see the tattoo than the bandage.
...but I digress...
It's not about having tattoos, it's about placement.
I was smart enough that all my tattoos are in places where I can choose when to show them (forearms and shins). The rest of them will be, too.
There are people in all of those fields you mentioned with ink. Some probably wear them openly. In fact, the trend in the last decade or more is to be more lenient with people in positions that require a higher degree of education than others. Ink is gaining acceptance far more rapidly than in previous decades (say, pre-90's).
Being in tech-support now, and no longer in the public eye, I'm allowed to wear shirts that expose my tattoos. Some areas of business are more lenient, even in the land of conservatism where I currently work.

That's GOOD advice.
Eric Automatically Appended Next Post: Frazzled wrote:It sounds like your tats aren't visible. Thats fine then, ink away.
While it's a matter of choice that I do so (keep 'em hidden), I reiterate my point about visible tattoos.
They're not the stigma they once were.
Even in conservative-Virginia, they weren't a hindrance. In fact, the hiring manager and I had a nice long conversation about tattoos and what we each had.

It's true that they aren't the stigma they once were, however there are places where you might run into trouble.
If you're going to have them, having them in easily covered places is probably still the best policy.

In the corporate world, visible tattoos would get you laughed at. Its not acceptable to besporting visible ink when meeting with the CEO of a multibillion dollar corporation, so sorry.

If you were meeting the CEO of a multibillion dollar corporation, wouldn't you be wearing a suit? That covers pretty much all tattoos except on the face, neck, and hands.

It's not about having tattoos, it's about placement.
And subject matter. That's pretty vital.
My tats are all "hidden" from everyday sight especially if I'm suited and booted. If yours aren't then I'm assuming you don't have anything especially offensive inked on you... can't see many banks hiring anyone with *checks page number.. too early for Godwin. damn.* ..with....WHITE POWER emblazoned across their eek.
You have to consider what other people are going to see and interpret as well. One of the chefs at work got a tattoo of his son's name done when his marriage ended and the kid moved in with his mum. To him, having the name "Craig" in a heart on his chest was showing his love for his son.... but he got no end of (good natured) leg pulling and comments about that when it was noticed at work.

No offense to anyone to anyone who has them but, tattoos look trashy. Just my opinion. And for the record when employers are considering people for a job visible tattoos during the interview almost always = not hired. Same goes for outrageous piercings or gages.
If there was technology that could alter any part of my body I would have it be something that would have no outward signs.
What I would want:
Admantium skeleton, or some other kind of unbreakable bones (No more rugby injuries)
Regenerative flesh

If you're going into an office or business setting, wearing a short sleeve shirt is a no-no to begin with. Short sleeve shirt screams "Casual Friday? Hell, I'm casual everyday". Tattoos shouldn't be any sort of issue if covered up. It seems that half of the people I work with have a tattoo of some sort.

Actually in the South, short sleeved shirts are often quite acceptable, especially during the summer months. When its 105, wearing a suit can kill you.

Tattoo's for me are personal, I have a couple I'd like to have done once I get the chance for lost ones, but they'd be in places I could cover easily.
Although I have no issue with those who go for coverage, seen some really nice ones. Although I draw the line at piercings, most of those kinda freak me out. Even iif I don't show it, especially the bolts/circlets in ears kinda ones.
Going back to my original question about the body alteration thing, do folks think its where we are headed, and what would be the effect on society if it does.
I could see it happening, taking one group as an example, I seriously could see hardcore Klingon fans (The ones who speak the language, dress up often) taking the option to actually be Klingons in look. Some fantasy fans the same, but how would greater society react.
Poorly I'd imagine, not sure what sort of looks the Tiger fella gets, but I doubt its 'awesome' from many when he goes shopping at the local store.

MDG : I'm afraid you need to realign yourself to your current lifestyle. You are a cabbie. You are one fare away from buying the Scum "newspaper" and wearing cardiagns. We'll miss and mourn you though.
If anything was possible :
Elephant man head.
3rd arm.
Full gender reversal.
Only for like a week or so, but just to try it.
I've always thought I'd make a great lesbian.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Says you. But, everyone has their own opinions.
Personally, I think that a really well done tattoo is like a piece of art. It speaks dramatically for the person who has it. Of course, I'm not into getting tattoos for the sake of getting them. They have to mean something to me.
You must not want to work in business, medicine, science, or engineering then. Unless its an old military tattoo, don't even bother coming in for the interview.
You should take medicine off of that list. As long as it can be covered up they really don't care. There are so many jobs in the medical field that they are hard up for, they really cant look at that stuff and say no anymore.
But other than that, I got 4 Tattoos planned out. I just need to get them drawn up and find a place that I can take them to and feel comfortable with what the end product will look like. Its my body, I'm not gonna let just anybody draw on it.

Nothing wrong with Elves, especially if that skin colouration comes in and we get sexy Drow girls.
I was refering more to the Klingon Outpost on an island somewhere, and the Orcs and Dwarves walking around.
