I heard from someone they are making an actual army out of Kroot at somepoint. In fact the army builder program our shop uses has a list of stuff for them. There are kroot and HQ choices for them
that I never seen or heard about before. Is this true and do you think they will be better then the kroot you find in tau army's?

Also I heard "ANY" army may enlist kroot or will be able to do so in an Apocolypse game.

Well, there was a free Kroot Mercenaries codex a few years ago. I think it was on the GW website and in WD. That would probably explain why Army Builder has lots of things listed.

And any army can enlist anything in Apocalypse. It's Apocalypse, after all. Don't think this rumor has any merit.

A new day, a new time zone.

I doubt we're going to see an update for the Kroot Mercenaries list any time soon. It was released under 3rd ed, IIRC, and hasn't been touched since then. That's what you're seeing in army builder.

Would be kinda cool though. Seeing some new units and maybe some heavy support kroot! Would love to see what would happen if they ever tried making a vehicle. I imagine them as fast flying vehicles that reply on getting in and striking the opponent and droping them to assault in front of the enemy. So they would swoop in, then attack with vehicle and then drop the kroot can assualt on a single turn...but I guess thats asking for too much. Kinda like asking a Tau Marker light to have the ability to explode in a bright flash and reduce the group they attached it to to reduce their BS and Initiative until the beginning of your next turn or to be able to stop them from making a movement. Like a marker light that pins them but does not stop them from shooting...just moving towards you for one turn.

Gathering the Informations.

The entire list was designed around Kroot mutations and genetic abnormalities forming the differing slots. Add in pit traps, hounds, krootoxes, etc and that was basically it.

Oh yeah, and the Knarloc riders.

I don't see Kroot as ever being more than mercs for hire, given that while they are pretty common mercenaries(at least in the fluff) in both the Imperium and beyond...
the Tau try to restrict that aspect of their culture, given that the Tau feed them technologoy also.

If kroot had vehicles they would probably be just some sort of large black-powder gun strapped on some sort of animal that could be mistaken for a freaking tank!

If GW did a Kroot Mercs list again that would be cool.

But i'd rather see more alien races in the next Tau Codex.

I think then we could really get a feel for their whole greater good, multi-species empire.

I definitely want to see at least one more different alien troop unit and human auxiliaries added to the mix.

PS: Doesn't this belong in 40K discussion instead of general?

I'd be in for a real Kroot army. Kroot rock, and with the foundation / wash combo they'd be easy as pie to paint up ...

Somewhere in south-central England.

The Kroot fly around in their interstellar War Spheres.

That implies they have a pretty high level of technology, and the reason why they fight more like North American Indians of the 18th-19th century (is that the right description?) is because of cultural preferences.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

No. The technology of kroot has been modified by tau.If you recall the kroot had no interstellar abilities when they met the tau. The tau found them.

Not entirely true. Kroot warspheres were developed independently from the Tau. How they accomoplished this is unknown to all, but its suggested that the kroot are more advanced than the Tau were lead to believe.

Well they probably got the technology from a space hulk that crashed. And their spheres are probably 20 century style(1957 or whenever they went to the moon.Big waste of money.) only capable of going to their moon and not being able to travel to other stars.

The historian in me is crying... That being said, I'm pretty sure that the fluff indicates that the Kroot are capable of Warp travel independent of any technology or aid given to them by the Tau

Well you are wrong, seeing as they have been working as mercs for sometime before the Tau showed up, meaning they can leave their star system.

A new day, a new time zone.

You might be interested in the section of the GW website entitled, "Battlefleet Gothic."

Just a heads up that there are actual sources of information people are referring to when they're saying exactly what technology the kroot have access to.

Battlefleet Gothic Tau Fleet list, Kroot Warsphere: wrote:Unlike the Tau, the Kroot are capable of true warp travel but the exact method has been kept secret from their employers. To the Kroot, warp travel is almost migratory and they seem incapable of navigating anywhere other than systems with habitable worlds. It appears they are drawn to functioning eco-systems.

There used to be a PDF mini-dex for them. That was a long time ago, it is no longer tourney legal, and they are not going to make kroot a whole codex of their own.

The original list was in White Dwarf, then made available as a PDF. It was tournament legal for a few years. I played against it when I went down for the Baltimore 07 GT. That was (I believe) the last GW event for which it was legal.

Not sure how much stock can be put in this... but I was searching for the PDF copy, and contacted GW about it, as after the latest redesign of their site they removed all the files that they didn't have active links to (so all the forums that had links to the PDF link to an error page). The reply was that the PDF was no longer available in any form from GW, and that there would be no further support for the army. Also of note is that while it was a usable codex last year, Kroot Mercenaries were not listed as a playable race for the Ard Boyz tournament.

It was a usable list two years ago. IIRC they removed it from the allowable GT armies for the 2008 season.
The guy I played against in 2007 brought a heavily-converted Kroot/Tau Empire counts-as army to the 2008 Baltimore GT. It was a pretty sweet gesture of protest.

Ah, this reminds me of a young Tau player I once knew......Okay, so he was 23. He loved Kroot, and had loads of the little buggers. He even had a croot in a crisis suit, affectionatly named "Battle Kroot Bill" by the other players. However, with all the AP2 weapons, the deathwing players (As well as myself, with my termie heavy chaos army) had a few 'other' name for it
