Been Around the Block
|
Well after getting some inspiration from Brother Argos' Steel Legion blog, I thought it was about time i tackled the army I've always wanted to do, and after re-reading both Titanicus and Mechanicum I broke out the bits box and had a rummage.
Here's the prototype for the Skitarii themselves, the final version will be cast in resin so that I've got multiple combinations. Please note that this was put together in a few hours so it's pretty rough and lacking in some details, the fianl ones will be much more detailed and neater!
Armylist wise, I'm using the witchhunters codex, as I feel that the Sisters of battle (being a low S/T, high AV army) are going to give me the best representation of the variety within the mechanicus, and there are far to many round here who've jumped on the IG bandwagon (some of us have been here since rogue trader!) Plus the "acts of faith" can count as "software upgrades" transmitted to the unit. Not sure what I'm going to have in the army, but a lot of immolators does have a certain appeal!
c&c welcome, more to follow once my parts arrive!
*edited for spelling...rouge trader.....d'oh*

A few idea mate, mostly what you said earlier.
Trim down the bolter, it looks big and the bionics dont look powerful enough to lift something that large. Also the second hand looks a bit lost.
I still think its an amazing start, cant wait to see you finish the testers and get a whole squad made up, just dont forget those Scars, i still think you have a good shot at the GT with them.

Awesome Stuff! Another Brother of The Omnissiah joins the fray
I too am constructing a mechanicum force, so just a quick Idea for you. I always imagine the Mechanicum being very coldly logicla, and removing anything that isn't necasary. ALot of my Skitarii will actually have their arms removed, their legs and spines reinforced and their weapons mounted directly on their shoulders. Only the ones the Mechanicum want to get into close combat would actually have bionic arms :p Just a bit of grimness there which I think is quite cool!!!
But the look you're going for is BRILLIANT! Subscribing to this thread ^^

Really nice! I agree with the bolter, either trim it down or augment the bionics and make them bulky. But other than that it is really cool!

nice model, me likey. the bolter does look rather big, though and fluff wise, most skitarii carry beam weapons, so a more slender HE Lasgun limb might look even better.
really looking forward to what you'll come up with for all the nice options in the WH 'dex.

Update time!
I know it's been a while but what with real life and a wedding needing to be planned, things have slowed somewhat at the great forge. However some progress has been made (thanks to brainstorming and badgering from my good friend Damous)
Firstly I've built a second prototype of the basic skitarii, using a much slimmer bolter (it's a trimmed down catachan lasgun, I first used that idea on an inquisitor several years ago...just seemed perfect now)
I've also got the basics done for a lot of the parts legs, bodies (although the left arms are going to be cut off once the GS is dry and smoothed, to allow the moulding to be done easier, and to give a variety of poses), weapons (the right arms are staying attached, allowing each of the bodies to have a different weapon and differnet pose) Heads (decided on using the woodelf hooded heads for convenience sake, and to go for the "hellboy" gasmask look with various sizes and numbers of augmetics)
Also, I cant stand the high elf feet, so something had to be done. Hence i glued a pair of HE legs to a base, chopped the feet off and sculpted these over them. Two extra blobs of GS and now everyone can be a bit taller with robotic feet!
Finally......and thanks have to go to my friend duncan for the idea....a WIP of my techmagos. Wanted something different so raided my bits box and an empire wizard box i had hanging around....

I love these, great work binary!
Although I have to go out ona a limb and say that personally I prefer the earlier bolter. For two reasons.
Firstly it looks like a bolter. It may sound silly but whilst your lasgun conversion is great it doesn't really look like a bolter. It still very much says to me lasgun or hellgun. If you wanted a slimmer bolter why not use some of the classic sickle bolters? These are much thinner and more archaic looking (suitable for admech maybe) and also they are very iconically bolter.
Secondly I disagree that the bionics wouldn't be able to support the weight of a standard bolter. If a Space Marine can fire a bolt gun true grit style with one hand I'm sure that a bionic limb such as this could support the weight and balance adequately. Also even guardsmen carry bolters in normal human limbs. If you wanted to beef up the bionics a bit why not add some cabling? With Guitar wire or electrical wire for example?

When I managed a GW store in '95 I made a point to look around the store and find a box where the miniatures had no red on them. I could only find two, both from the Man O' War range.
Oh, and these guys are looking very nice. I particularly like the cut down lasguns and feet.

I knew it, if I badgered you enough I will get you to continue working on them. The Mago's is looking cool, i just think some more work on the legs might be needed, but im not sure if im stating the obvious.
Just so people reading this blog know, Binary and I are gaming buddies and both are planning on taking new armies to the next GT we can go too (was going to be this year, but due to the fact we are both poor, could not get tickets in time) I'm working on stuff myself, but seeing as my digital camera is old as the Emp's Golden Toilet, im waiting till i can get my hands on my gf's before i post up any pics. Got two armies on the go, but i gotta decide what I want to put all my limited funds behind.
Btw Binary, if its possible could you get some pics of Dunc's Ad-Mec stuff for me. You and Cai are both telling me about it and I would like to actually see how they have turned out. Also what about that other 'Thing' you were talking about? Must be sneeky, I dont know who is reading this (I love evil plans)

Nice stuff here, I think the slim-line bolter is a cool touch and fits much better with the weapon in the first pic.
The heads could use a little work though, particularly the "sack over the face" head. I don't think this really fits with the ad mech look (perhaps more dark mechanicus).
Gas masks and bionic faces are the way to go. Let the robes have the soft curves etc and the man (machine - power extreme! ) beneath be hard lines and mechanical dohickies.
Cheers,
Dante

Hi Binary, I love Mechanicus armies, they're a great way to let your freaky gothic imagination run riot (i've dreamed of one for a while) this appears to be shaping up to be a good one, especially the arch magos. if you can bear it, there is a couple of inspiring mechanicus logs on warseer. theyre well worth a look best of luck with the army, Overlord
