I lost this round to a Massacre for two reasons:

1. I deployed very poorly and should have focused more on one side of the table or the other, not tried to split the difference.

2. Those damn Chaos Spawn, which are supposed to suck and didn't Dear god, the trouble they gave me.

He went first and had three objectives in his deployment zone, all being baby sat. Both of my DPs got tangled up with his spawn, each losing three wounds to them (entirely my fault for letting that happen). With my most mobile heavy hitters out of the way, my Summoned Greater Daemon was the only thing that managed to makes it all the way across the board, and the game ended with him contesting an objective. Otherwise two of his babysat objectives were safe, one of mine was with a squad parked on top, and one near the middle that I placed got contested last turn and I just couldn't clear it (with some forethought I could have blocked this form happening too). I ended up getting 1 bonus point.

Round 2:

I have the list here, but here's the summary:

Command Squad

Lord Commissar

Storm Troopers

2 Platoon thingies, one with a Command Squad, 3 "Platoon squads" and a Heavy Squad, one with 3 Platoon Squads and a Command

2 Vet Squads with flamers and whatnot (inside the flyers, meant for CQ fighting)

3 Vendetta Gunships

2 Seperate Leman Russ, and another squad of 2

This game I got a Massacre and a bonus point. My DPs and Greater got to go to work as soon as they showed up and it was fun. Pretty much a hack-fest all around. I only lost 1 HQ because I kept all of my HQs in reserve. It was a fun moment when in one turn he fired 126 Lasgun shots at a Daemon Prince and dealt exactly four wounds (I rolled one inch short of Assault range in the turn previous, leaving me open). I took both of his HQs and most of his tanks. I was worried the most about this round and figured I would get massacred on this one if any.

Round 3:

I fought:

Tigirius and Khan

Assault Termis, a few with claws, a few with TH/SS, in a LR Redeemer

Two Drop-podding Ironclads

1 Tac squad on foot with heavies, 1 in Razorback with Melta/Las, 1 Drop-podding with a Fist and Melta

Drop-podding Assault squad with usual kit

A Whirlwind and two Predators

I gave up a Minor Victory this round, partially because the time didn't get called at the right moment (30 minutes too late), and also because I forgot to place the smoke counter and my vindi that was contesting the objective counter he was holding. It was the last round of a tournament I knew I wouldn't win so I didn't say anything about the smoke (I had called it, but forgot to place the token), but I rolled for cover myself just to see and I would have been the only one holding an objective. Not that it really matters to anyone else, but it makes me feel nice. I was the only one who popped his LR that day. The Daemons owned this game. I otherwise gave up 1 more KP than him (his 8 to my 9). It was close enough and the guys army was pretty enough that he deserved to beat me.

More detailed info can be attained if interested.

Basically none of the negatives anyone predicted for me running only Vanilla CSM happened or were much of a factor, and my extra numbers helped alot. The DP on the Rhinos (a biproduct of 40 extra points) actually came in very useful, working once or twice each game in my favor, though I wouldn't dish the points out for it unless I had extra. Those freakin spawn... I just should have been smarter about. Either way, I beat IG (run by a guy who also got Massacred first round, granted) in Mission 2 with 3 HQs, which was rewarding all in itself. Any questions/comments?

BTW, I ended up ranking just above half in my store. It was either 8th or 9th out of 18.

I'm very interested in that first game, if you could post more details or anything :-). I'm composing an army thats similar to his and yours, so any details on how units performed or what was surprising would be very helpful.

Thanks!

The first game was against a guy I play a lot, who tends to play pure Thousand Sons given the chance (partially because he likes the strategy, and and part because nearly all of his models are really old and awesome looking). He deployed first with his three objectives all along the back. Two were held by 1k Sons and one was sat by his chosen squad and later his Lesser Daemons (they were behind this little hill and I never got to shoot at them). His Land Raider was up front and moved enough to drop off some Termis, but otherwise ended up getting tied up/destroyed by my Greater Daemon. He left a Rhino of 1k Sons tucked behind a piece of terrain in the near middle of the board to gain cover the whole game and contest at the end. His Prince sat way in the mid-back and snuck up, waiting to wreak havoc until it was clear. One group of spawn occupied the center of each table third (awkwardly worded?) and advanced, running in to the DPs I pretty much offered up to them. There was a fairly large piece of terrain in the middle of the board, and I deployed one rhino to the mid-back on the left side to hold that objective and maybe help out on that half of the table. I also deployed two rhinos out front (one with DP on either side) on both sides of the field. My Vindicator stayed deployed to the left as well, barley advancing through out the game after an early immobilization. Early on his greater daemon came rampaging down the right side and backed up his spawn which were running into my Rhinos (eventually immoblilizing both). I didn't try for that objective near as easly as I should have, which might have tied the game for me. Overall the spawn slowed things down and the LR, Termi Squad and DP slowed down my left side advance to the point where I just didn't make it across the board except with my Greater Daemon. I let my Princes fall way too early and should have Boltered the spawn to death instead, which would have slowed me down at first but saved me turns in the long run. I can say if I played this exact same game again I would do significantly better. My Obliterators were deployed one squad on each side. My Oblitz shot his Oblitz down first turn, even with night fighting.

The things that do well in my list are:

3 effective Meltas in every squad. Big things die when hit with that many. I took out every Land Raider I played against, 2 Vendettas, 2 Leman Russ, an Ironclad Dread and some Drop Pods.

The extra bolter on the Rhinos. In-freaking-valuable. 5 points for an extra WD/I result and the firepower is beautiful against horde armies.

The daemons provide awesome heavy-hitters that marines and many other armies have a difficult time answering up close. Even against Assault Termis they can do really well.

If I could change on thing about mine, I would drop one squad of CSM for a Thousand Sons squad or a Plague Marine squad. Just one. I'd take the points from the extra spent on the DP for the Rhinos. In all of my playtesting, Berzerkers never did anything useful and Noise Marines are hardly worth it for me.

I know for my opponent, the spawn didn't do so well in the following games, providing only minor harassment. Traditionally when I play this guy I just play the numbers to my advantage and it usually gives me the edge I need to win (though he's taken me down hard a few times). Thousand Sons lack a Good Melta-equivalent which is SO important in 5th

Reading about the effectiveness of the Spawn against you was a jaw-dropper... I would have never expected anything significant from Spawn.. still don't, just bad luck I'm sure.

I'can't believe he was using Sorcs to bring in the Greater Daemon, or am I missing something? That sounds like a double whammy of losing a sorc + now his TSons are 1d6" move?

Your list was clearly better than his list, IMO, but sounds like bad deployment + bad luck + his good play = doom for you that round... happens to the best.

If you switch 1 unit of CSM, go Plague Marines for sure, imo, since they address your complaint about T'Sons. As I am sure you know, 5+ Plague Marines = same number of meltas as 10 CSM, so you get your survivability bump + still keep your meltas.

I was just really really stupid with the DPs. Should have moved twelve and let them look for 6s and 6s on Rhino hide, but whatev.

He brought the greater in off a naked champ in the Chosen squad. Yeah, I'd basically have 310 points to pour into one.

How'd you fair, or did you?

I didn't go I am still too casual to go to something like Ard Boyz, meaning that doing a 2500 point in 2.5 hours is too rough for me and I would just piss people off with my slow play. I am practicing a lot for the 1750 Battlefoam Tourney in Arizona, so hopefully that will get me a bit faster.

My goal would to be prepared, skill/time wize for next years, so until then I am just talk

In the first mission, how did he have 3 objectives in his deployment zone? The mission specifically stated each player got 2 to place in their own deployment zone. The other was to be placed in the very middle of the board.

It looks like you were cheated a bit in the first game. He should not have had three objectives along his back line.

I'm curious to know why your vindicator didnt just slaughter those spawn. Even with scatter you'll probably hit two of them, which means two dead spawn. Other than that its just a case of driving up in your rhinos and rapid firing bolters at them.

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

Well, whaddya know. We both read the mission rules for the deployment (I even playtested all the missions in advance several times, including doing this one the proper way) but I guess my nerves got the best of me. I was really, really focusing on not screwing up my deployment and must have been too distracted by it. I've played the guy several times and he's always a gracious player and wouldn't intentionally cheat. This just goes to show even more that I wasn't in it at all that first game. Is there such a thing as being too focused?

First turn night fighting I couldn't reach the spawn, Second turn scattered way the hell off and top of the third was immobilized with spawn out of view. It then started to focus on the LR as it was all it could reach for the rest of the game.
