So I bought a box of assorted models from a guy I know, and in it were a bunch of Tau, chaos, and what caught my eye- a Hammerhead.

I play Orks, and ive been kicking around the idea of using a looted wagon (mostly just to see if I could do it). So when I saw the Hammerhead, I figured it'd make as good a base as any for it!

Following a random thought I had, I proceeded to paint it up as a Tau vehicle, full camo and everything. I thought I would make it look like they had painted it red in a hurry, and let a bunch of it show through.

Needless to say, I dont quite think i got it to work

Then I was contemplating its role on the battlefield.
Im gonna have it switchable from a transport with a skorcha, to a tank with a Boomgun.

I figure im going to put a big shoota in the belly gun (where the tageting array was) and maybe mess with the drone a little bit too.

So that brings me to my first set of questions:

1) Modeling-wise, what would the best-looking choice be: custom building big shootas (if so, out of what) or would it look ok using the shootas on the Boyz sprues?

2) Game-wise, coult you crew it with Grots to get the BS 3, or will it only be allowed BS 2?

3) Any suggestions on constructing the Kannon?

1. Use the Big Shootas on the Boyz Sprues.

2. Nope, It's gotta be Boyz, no Grotz

3. Use the Hammerhead Turret, with suitable Orky Conversion.

I always liked the idea of looted Skimmers for Orks.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

1) Well, I unfortunately already used the Big shoota, and painted/glued it, so I dont think its an option =/

2) Dang... xD
and here I thought I could get a little more bang for my buck

3) mk, mk... Ill see what I can do.

And yeah. heh. I saw a friend's Fire Prism one day and thought "I want to loot that. cut this off, and an armor plate here..."
In my searches I havent come across too many looted skimmers. Its kind of a unique feature of an ork army

I guess I have another question too...
4) Comments on the paintjob/conversion progress. What can I add/take away (or attempt to) to make it look better?

I like it so far.

Gamewise, I don't personally love looted wagons - I'd play it as a battlewagon with a closed roof, but that's your choice. By the way, if anyone whines about it being a skimmer, tell them the engines are damaged and the vehicle can only drag itself along the ground, never quite getting airborne.

I think the biggest kannon issue is how to mount it - the original turret isn't really designed for kannon-type recoil weaponry. Consider takingthe turret off (using it for another looted vehicle) and replacing it with a more typically orky turret? Hmm, how would a Battlewagon turret look on there?

heheh I think it was around here that I read about someone talking of using Grots with spears (fantasy goblin models i think) to hold up the "skimmer"

Aha. Definitely understand what ya mean.
Shoot, I wish I had a Battlewagon =/
My biggest challenge right now is the money aspect, and all the shiny parts that I cant have

maybe something built out of plasticard would work?
I finished a 3d concept model of a cannon idea. Its designed thus far in the mindset of the railgun mount.
But recoil, recoil.... thats gonna bug me now xD

EDIT::

Hmmm I had an idea of a possibility...

What of a recoilless Rifle setup?

Granted to a larger scale... *thinks*

Ok, first thing to get out of the way. Dont put it on the ground. Leave it floating. Orks believe things work, and they do. Thats in the fluff. I hate it when people loot tau/eldar stuff, and then HAVE to come up with ways to make them not float. ERG. Obviously games wise its still a looted wagon. LOS wise, if it ever becomes a problem, then you can take it off the flying base and set it down. That shouldnt happen unless you play with jerk holes.

As far as the big shootas you want, take 2 shootas. cut the barrel off of one, and the very tip of the other off, and then glue the two together. It makes a perfect big shoota. Thats what I did on my trikes. Look in my gallery and youll see one or two of them.
You can model it with grots driving it around all that sure, but it still retains the BS2. Some think it sucks, but when I take something that needs to shoot, I load it down with big shootas. The more rounds you get into the air, the better chances you have at doing something lol

Oh yea the boom gun. I used a scope from a toy gun on mine (gallery) but you can easily buy 2 pieces of pvc that fit inside one another, and make a gun that way. I love my boom gun. It blows the hell out of SM like you wouldnt believe

Maybe use the drones as armour for some other Orks in the army. That is if you have the drones.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

1) You can make perfectly fine big shootas by taking two normal shootas and using one to make the other long barreled. Throw the little ammo belt on the side and voila! Big Shoota.

2) It's going to be BS2 no matter what. You can't change the stat line in the Codex.

3) Replace the Tau turret with a Leman Russ turret... or maybe even a Predator turret. If you use the LR turret then you have an instant Boomgun. Just shorten the barrel a little or maybe splay the end to make it look exploded like a misfire.

So far, job's a good un!

Ok So!
Have updates for ya!

I cut apart a deffkopta to get at the driver, and wouldn't ya know it, but he found a nice home in the Looted hammerhead (hmm.... I should give it a name)

And now another question.
5) What do ya think? Should I armor him up or just let him be?

The belly gun is done, but currently drying.
should have something up later!

At first glance, I didn't like this idea - recoilless weapons didn't seem very orky. But thinking about it further, grotzookas are presumably grot bazookas, and of course rokkits are also recoilless. Some sort of missile/rokkit launcher turret (especially if the mek was inspired by the SkyRay?) would be a relatively easy modelling option - a turret festooned with a dozen missiles/rokkits would lbe very amusing.

I think it should be busted to the point they stuck wheels/tracks on it. That'd be hilarious.

Along a similar line to The_Chaplain's idea, I found after finishing half of one that I absolutely abhor the newest Trukk model, so I currently have a cab-less flatbed that never gets used. One of these days I'm going to turn it into a wrecker by using most of a wrecking ball to chain a Tau skimmer to the back, model it up as though it's being dragged to/from the fight by the Trukk just to be able to use the guns on it.

Ok! Wow ive been busy xD
I have updates!

First order of business is that I have plasticard now! *celebrates*

Second order- the front armor!

Not quite sure how to go about this part.
This look good for a base? Naturally ill add a plate or two, and rivets and such...

Third order of business- the turret!

You're going to want to add some rivets to that plasticard. Unless there's some texture to it, plasticard always ends up just looking like plasticard no matter how it's painted.

Try using a 1/16" hole puncher to gently emboss some rivets out onto it, or use cardboard for a corrugated look.

Bear in mind that I'm a very casual player, and any advice I give will reflect that tendency.
