Thinking of Joining a Davinite Loge
|
Hey all,
I picked up the Aegis Defence Line and a Basilisk yesterday at GW with the intention of turing the weapons into static defence weapons and I was wondering if anyone has so far done anything like it?
I'm planning on turning the quad-autocannons into a manned field weapon (with commander/spotter, loader and gunner) in a similar vain to the 20mm Flakvierling:
I also want to turn the Basilisk in a manned stationary 88mm FlaK 37 (with commander/spotte, loader and gunner):
Basically, I'm wandering if anyone has done something like this before and if anyone can impart some tips to aid me in the quest. Any and all help will be appreciated!

I had thought about doing something similar with the Quad Autocannon, My Advice would be to start with the Quad gun and use the ground stand from the Imperial bastion Set, the one with the three little legs. And then I would use Imperial guard with the Autogun ammo canisters as the loaders, a vox user with an auspex as the scanner to pick the targets before they can be seen, an officer with binoculars as the gun commander and then I think the seated gunner would be the hardest one to manage.
Not sure one the 88, but looking at it historically that one would have a lot of crew, (My Flames of War ones have a Crew of 8) as you need a lot of men to carry the larger shells to keep up a decent weight of fire, unless you planned on putting in some sort of auto loader. Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply! I don't have access to the bastion kit at the moment so I think I may have to make my own out of plasticard :( But I've just had an idea for the gunner; I was thinking of using some of my spare sentinel bits and try and fuse it to the rear of the quad.
As for the 88, you raise a good point about the number of crew. Seeing as though 40k rules will only allow me to fire one shot per turn I think I can get away with less crew members but we'll see what I can find in my bits box. I may be able to scratch up five crew members for it. I do still have the old metal Basilisk crew from about ten years back, maybe I could strip and use them.
You've given me something to think about.

You could use the sentinal pilot for the seated gunner, and i think that you could bodge the, or part of the, basilisk gunshield onto the quad gun.
For the 88 conversion, all i can say is have a look at the forgeworld earthshaker cannon emplacement (not the krieg one with wheels, but the one on the stand instead).
Good luck.

I'm gonna be using the Basilisk shield on the 88 itself. But I do have a spare in my bits box, I may be able to drill some holes into it and use it. Thinking...
The Forge World ones are nice but basically just a Basilisk without the chassis (with the platform moving with the gun). I kinda want it to be just the gun and the crew work around it on the ground.

Hmmm...interesting. I won't be buying them but they've given me some ideas. The spotter is using the measuring equipment and I have one of them spare from a 1/35 MG42 kit I got last year. Many thanks, they've given me some idea of how to make my guys.

You don't have to wait long, I've just thrown together my quad autocannons and made something godly. I am so chuffed with how this turned out:
I've made the gunner (he's inside) and also the officer. I just have to make the loader then the basics are done. Gonna make a scenic base for it using the aegis barricades.

With the size of the gunner's mount, it would seem as though the gun could not reach a high angle. It looks like the back of his seat would hit the ground.
I would also recommend not enclosing the gunner completely, as this would make it hard for a loader to operate. Otherwise, looking good so far.

I had considered that while building and managed to saw off parts of the sentinel cockpit to allow the quad to move in it's full capacity.

Thanks for comments so far. I'm planning on giving the tips of the base big circles of plasticard. It's actually slightly bigger than the one found in the Bastion box set.
It's still not done and still WiP. Just completed making the loader.

Nice work, infilTRAITOR. That will look cute on a buidling in a Planetstrike game, or could also look good on top of a Chimera chassis counting as a battlefield-converted Medusa. (As was done in WW2 with many AA guns.)
Yeah, I was wondering how it might look on the Bastion Lascannon tripod base, a shame it's too small.

I will have pics of it on a Bastion in about a week or two when my buddy gets around to building it. A Medusa is a huge artillery piece so I asume you meant the Hydra. That is exactly what I'm gonna have the weapon count as; a Hydra (only without the Chimera armour or the ability to move).
FoxPhoenix135 wrote:Lol they keep trying to nit pick and you keep showing them up! Good show.
I know eh, they don't know how bless'd they are to witness this lol! It's not bad for a quick 10 minute build though I'm building a scenic base for it later on tonight which should be good.
Anyway, I don't know why people are wailing on the support. The standard quad-autocannon sits on a box for crying out loud. The autocannons don't show any signs of the barrels causing recoil as there isn't anywhere for them to go but we can probably chalk this up to GW not really knowing much about weapons.
All I care about is that I have my own 40k Flakvierling which I can take to fun Apocolypse games to take down those pesky aircraft people seem to love bringing.

Not even started yet. I have all the bits ready for it but seeing as though I'm putting together a huge army in two weeks I'm struggling to find time to squeeze in 88 godliness. That's a project to do between my army and my walking Tiger I.

Further down the line I may do this. Could put it on some trucks (Cargo 6 and 8s) I have plans on making later on in the year.
I have put on a basecoat last night. At the moment it's tabletop quality but I'm like an idiot at a party that needs to take it that one step too far. PREPARE FOR SOME WEATHERING SHORTLY!!! CAPS ohnoes!!
