I have just started playing 40k orks, and have absolutley no idea what to get for an army.  I have some models that I got used off of a friend and kustom built a battlewagon because I had nothing better to do. The models I have are as follows.
- 12 Slugga Boyz
- 12 Shoota Boyz
- 2 Tankbustas
- Kaptin Baddrukk
- Battlewagon w. kannon, 4 big shootas, red paint and extra armour
- 4 unbuilt boyz
I don't really care about the army composition, but would prefer something effective against most enemies. I would like to start with a 1000 pt army, and then add 500 pt blocks. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ima steal dashofpepers line here orks are better then any other army at everything if you only pick one style pick more and youll lose
for badrukk the best way to use him is get some paper then but him on top in the corner so you can still write on the paper
flash gits are one of the worst squads in the ork army lootas are far better
tankbustas if you know what your doing can be strong but they stink otherwise(ill give you a hint throw them in a transport)
id say get lots more boys and possibly thraka for horde or lots more trucks boys nobs battlewagons and a kff mek for mechinized orks

Definitely decide what sort of army you want to run before you continue. I failed to do so, and now have 3000 some points in painted boyz that I have a hard time pulling into one effective list at 1000 pts.
Do you want a shooty army, an fast army, a Mech army, an army with lots of walkers, or a horde?
If you are looking for a list that is strong enough that it forces the other player to beat you, you want horde, and in that case you want to run 100+ models at 1000 pts, so you are going to need more boyz.

I would like to do something along the lines of a walker army with lots of kans and dreads, although I wasn't sure if this style of army could be tactically viable. Another reason it was attractive was because I am a notoriously slow painter, and would probably have to paint fewer models. My only concern is to beat my gaming friends with this list, and as such, I will be facing horde tyranids, horde orks, space marines and tau. Any suggestions on an army to effectivly combat these foes would be appreciated.

The DreddBash (2 big meks, 2 dredds, 3x3 killa kanz = about 900 pts) is a fine army! Virtually immune to small arms fire, tough in CC. lotsa dakka!
Add in some shoota boyz, or some fast attack to make up for it's slow march across the table and you are good to go!
Unless you are fielding lots of trukks full of 12 boyz (11+nob), then I prefer mobs of 20. Small mob of orks are very fragile.
I have recently found the power of large mobs of shoota boyz - loadsa dakka! A couple of mobs of 20 can seriously ruin your opponents day
Check out some of the ork lists in this forum, there are many to choose from, and lots of comments.

Take a 30 man squad of Shoota boyz give 3 of them Big Shoota's, make one a nob with powerclawand Make them Ard boyz and then build around it. You will desimate another ork player cause he has no save you have 4+. I would put Thrakka cause he gives you the 6 inch waaagh and makes every model in your army fearless. Thats like 600 pionts by it self. take your battle wagon as a heavy choice. You need 1 more troop choice at this piont level i would take a warboss with twin-linked shoota and powerclaw only and a squad of 10 nobz in a stripped down trukk. If you have army builder or a friend that does, play with the pionts. maybe the wagon is to many, maybe you can afford to upgrade the nobz, i would try to keep the wagon though the templete and shootas are great for slowing down your friends that play horde army's. You need speed to take out the SM and tau get in there face with a power claw and 36 close combat attacks with your basic nobz on the charge. If you have the money start getting mega-nobz and don;t tell anyone you have them, buy them one at a time build them, and put them away till you have a 9 man squad, then you can really make your friends hate you. Good luck and have fun, cause Orks, always have fun.

Orks can do anything that any other army can do and do it better than they can. However, they cannot do everything that any other army can do. Make sense? If you make an ork assault army, they'll out-assault any other army in 40k. If you make a shooting army, you can outgun IG or Tau. If you go foot-slogging, or mechanized, or kan-wall....all those options make you a completely awesome army, but there's a catch. You can only do one of them at a time with an army list.
If you combine a mechanized and a foot-slogging list, you're going to lose. If you have part assault, party shooting, you're probably going to lose. Your strength is in being able to pick something and be completely awesome at it. So before giving you advice on where to go next with your army, you need to pick a theme and build around it. If you want a bike army, or a shooting army; an outflanking army, mechanized, assault, figure out what your playstyle is and start building your units and armylist around that idea.
THAT is the strength of Orks.
When you decide what you want your army list to be, start by explaining what your intent is, then post an army list along those lines and we'll work from there and make suggestions.

Thanx for the advice. I am really not sure what to choose however because my friends either play a very shooty army (tau/space marines) or very assault oriented armies (tyranids/CSM) I understand that I will have to choose a style of play and tailor a force to fit, but do not care what kind of force that is. A shooty army or and assault army would be cool. I just need an effective list to improve my 0-9 record.

In that case, here's what you should do: Build an assault army that can guarantee it will get the assault, not get assaulted.
Put your 12 Slugga boyz in a trukk. Build one out of plasticard for now if you have to.
Put your 12 Shoota boyz in a trukk, and tell your opponent that all the boyz on the table are slugga boyz.
You need an HQ: Get an AoBR box ($60) and split with another player who wants space marines....it will give you an extra half of boyz and nobs, along with some Deff Koptas.
Proxy a big mek with a kustom force field in there to protect your trukks from that shooting.
Alternatively, if you want to go with the AoBR box and not get trukks / proxy trukks, you can start building 30 man boy squads with a Nob and powerklaw in each. If you want to go the foot-slogging route, you should get some gretchin (I bought 60 of them off e-bay for $0.25 apiece; 1st edition gretchin). a 29 gretchin+2 Runtherder unit serves to provide a 4+ cover save to the rest of your army when you string them out front. It makes your orks quite survivable.
If you want to make a shooty army, start with Lootas. 45 of them. Proxy them if you have to. Build your army around there. Personally, I like a combination of 15 Lootas inside a Battlewagon, x3, with a Mek with a KFF inside the center one. My opponent now has to get through AV14 unless they outflank, and I get a 4+ cover save on the stuff that DOES get through AV14.

I definatley want to go the with AoBR box because you get so much stuff for less than it would normally cost. Also, I would be able to sell the marines to get some money back. Also I will get it cheaper than I would normally because I will be purchasing the set, as well as some boyz in the US. Not only that, but I will be able to selectivly choose what I purchase. As it stands, I am torn between the assualt army and the shooty army. I am thinking of doing the shooty army simply because I have my shootas painted, and because lootas are awesome. On the other hand, if I use this style of army, the AoBR will be relativley useless (save for the warboss and Nobz) Would you reccomend not getting the box and just buying lootas, or going with the assualt force.

Shooty orks work well - shoota boys walk forward unloading da dakka until close enough to charge!
AoBR are slugga boyz, but you can either "Counts as" or convert them quite easily.

I would like to buy the AoBR box, but I don't think I would be able to convert the sluggas to shootas (don't know how) I was wondering if there was any conversion section on tackling such a project. Also, are lootas the way to go for elites? The profile is good, but I want to make sure I am buying the right thing.
