I assume the chaos fleets can cross the immaterium without any trouble, so why doesn't Abaddon or whoever just go into the warp as soon as he's out into real space and come out right into the Solar system rather than attacking from the edges of the Eye? He could severely threaten both Terra and Mars if he did that.

Because he is really stupid.....and if he got to terra + mars gw would implode.

Chaos fleets have it just as hard as imperial fleets when it comes to navigating the warp. That's why the cadian gate is so important. It's the only stable passageway out of or into the eye of terror and if Abaddon was able to knock out Cadia he could pretty much rampage his way back to Earth.

The sink.

Apparently chaos marines get no warp navigation benefits just because they are chaos.

And if Abby could jump right to Terra he'd have won already and the game would be dead.

Yes, but once he's out of chaos space there's no reason to stay and fight the Cadians etc, he can just jump into the warp and go elsewhere, like the Segmentum Solar.

the Cadian Gate is simply the easiest way out of (and into) the Eye of Terror.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

The Imperium and Space Marines use the Astronomican as a focal point to allow Warp travel to be possible. I find it strange that Chaos can't home in on this beacon like any other Imperial vessel can.

Obviously is they could then it would be a simple matter of following the beacon to its source to Earth. Obviously I'm guessing there's a reason why they don't or can't, but I'm not aware of such.

They still need navigators, and I'm pretty sure the astronomican doesn't pierce the eye of terror or Earth would have been hit long ago.

I don't think that they have astropaths.

Indeed, and we've seen extended wars in other sectors of the galaxy (Battle Fleet Gothic anyone?). However as noted above, this is a game and we need campaigns.

Otherwise it would be:

Minute one:
1. Chaos fleet drops out of warp in terran
Minute Two - Six:
2. Battle Fleet Terra and 80 gazillion defense stations open up. Abaddon is heard to say "where'd they get that?" A good time is had by all.
Minute Seven - Ten
3. Grey Knights, Custodes, and 80 gazillion storm troopers teleport onto chaos ships. Hilarity ensues.
Minute Eleven:
4. Ad Mech on Mars hit the "break glass in case of Chaos attack" Fire Alarm and pull out all the interesting ships in their AD Mech Toy Chest That No One Knows About (TM) one of which was last seen blowing up a necron ship. Abaddon is heard saying "What the ?!? Run away!!!!"
Minute Twelve:
5. All the energies unleashed create a hole in space and time. The combined Imperium and Chaos fleets are eaten by a small dog. Game over.

Penance? Hell, killing heretics and xenos is the only thing that will make me feel better.

Vaguely off topic, but I think that plot hole is not actually a plot hole. If the ring had been flown from Rivendell to Mt Doom there is a high chance that Sauron would have learnt of this and had time to line the approaches to the mountain and the mountain itself with archers and his ring wraiths. He may even have been able to exert influence over the eagle or the hobbit carrying the ring if he had direct LOS to the ring, his will was phenomenal after all. It was best that Sauron had no idea where the ring was until it was too late so that he couldn't focus his attention on it.

Penance? Psh, being assigned to killing 100 Heretics and 50 Xenos is like being assigned to eat bubblegum and play videogames all day.

Maybe Abbadon likes to test the Gate and get warmed up before the real crusade happens. It's like his appetizer before the main course?

I'm beginning to think that Abaddon doesn't actually want to go back to Terra because he knows he has no chance of winning without Horus to hold his hand. Let's face it, he's had 10,000 years to practice his generalship and he still can't get past Cadia despite 13 huge attempts.

Because he's thick... surely cadia is supported by other planets, right? He needs to go and quickly run behind cadia and smash them so cadia is cut off from supplies and stuff... but noooooo ;p

The Eye of Terror

Imagine the following:
Abbadon and the largest force he can muster jumps over the "fence" of the eye of terror and attacks Terra.
Oh, wait, turns out Terra is more heavily fortified than even Cadia.
He loses almost all of his force, and is now stranded in material space.
Crap.

Now imagine he brings that same force to the Cadian gate.
There is no risky warp travel.
He takes Cadia. The eye of terror is now a sanctuary for chaos, rather than it's cage. The full force of chaos pours into material space. Everyone dies.
Or he doesn't take Cadia. He can go back and try again.

Win/Slightly Less win, rather than Lose/Lose.

Abbaddon led about half the Black Crusades. EVERY Black Crusade destroyed tons of Imperial stuff and made the imperium weaker and chaos stronger.

It's been tried. It didn't work. Cadia is too much of a fortress to just "go around"
