Ok, so I'm reading over infantry platoon and I see that they are a single troop choice when looking at the FOC, for deploying, and rolling for reserves, but my question is how are they played after that??

So I understand an infantry platoon is 1 Platoon Command Squad, 2-5 Infantry Squad, 0-5 Heavy Weapons Squad, 0-2 Special Weapons Squads, and 0-1 Conscrips Squads, but beyond that, do they all move independantly, or do they all move as one big unit. I see benifits for both ways as FRFSRF would work on 50 Infantry figures, but at the same time, I dont want my Heavy Weapons Squads to not be able to fire should I always be moving. Just a little confused on this and wanted to see what was up before I played with them.

Thanks for your help

edit: Changed 50 infantry squads to 50 infantry figures (or 5 squads)

Forever alone

It doesn't take much thinking to use a big blobbed infantry squad.

1. Move fowards.
2. Stay there.
3. Shoot flashlights in general direction of enemy.
4. ???
5. PROFIT!!!

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Hehe, that made me laugh a little, but it didnt answer my question... Do they move as a one big group locked together never to be seperated unless an IC moves in or out, or do the move independant of one another? Thats my big question that I was confused over with IG

Edit: I guess my problem is the difference between squad and unit. I guess for playing, I'm going to say that squads are what units are made up of. For exampe, for a basic infantry platoon, the UNIT is made up of 1 platoon command squad and 2 infantry squads minimum.

They count as one FOC spot, but (given your example, 3) several separate (scoring) units.

Say, the PCS has a lascannon, and the infantry squads are trundling after objectives, if the PCS doesnt move, it CAN fire.

The squads do NOT need to maintain coherency with each other, only the models within the squad.

Each squad counts towards kill points.

Infantry Squads can, if you wish, during deployment, merge to form larger squads (your example would end up as 1PCS, and 1 20-man squad of guardsmen) which benefits from any upgrades taken by anyone in the squad (I.E. Squad 1 has a vox-caster, squad 2 does not. they combine, the resultant squad has the Vox-caster re-rolls).

Anything else I missed?

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

Each squad within the platoon is a separate unit once deployed. So each unit can move, shott, etc separately from anything any other unit is doing. The exception to this is if you blob up the Infantry Squads.

Oh wow, thats the best of both worlds then... I can leave my Heavy Weapons Squads behind and still benifit from the orders given by commanders for 5 infantry squads blobbed up.... Wow, thats a little more powerful than I thought it would be... Thanks for the help guys

Guard Platoons give many crappy units for 1 FOC slot. They aren't a blob unless you make them a blob.

Yes. It's like reverse combat squadding. They're separate units, but you can take any combination of ones (from the same FOC slot) and combine them. If that means you want to leave your heavy weapons teams out of the blob; go for it.

Just remember that, like combat squadding, it's the number of units *as deployed* that counts for kill points.

If you've got 5 squads in a platoon, you can also choose not to blob them to have 5 scoring units. Or you can partially blob them, and have 2 scoring units of 20 and 30 models apiece.
