Simple topic, or seemingly so at least.

What do you find is the best way for you to learn something? Studying? Hands-on experience? Group projects?

I am a hands on person and I like to work with people. I am not a huge fan of classic studying, but I see the point in it.

If you are going to be specific about a subject, explain why you think your form of learning is effective for you.

I feel that I learn best when I have something discussed/teached to me, then moveing in and doing hands on afterwards on the subject.

Here's a web site talking of multiple intellegence types, or how people learn. There are also tests that can be taken that can help people pinpoint how they learn.

http://www.thomasarmstrong.com/multiple_intelligences.htm

At work, I currently train people how to train others, and I have found that the approach you take with one doesn't neccessarily work with another, and can even work against them.

For myself, I've found that I'm mainly in the intrapersonal and interpersonal catagory. I do a lot of mulling things over and look at them from different angles.

Wikipedia also has some good descrptions of learning types:

I have always had a really hard time with formal teaching, notes and the like, mainly because the material simply doesn't interest me. If my brain says no I do not care, I can hardly argue with it, perhaps I can convince it otherwise but it usually makes better points.

I just wish there were trade schools around when I was a kid, I almost feel robbed of another life so to speak. Aroun here all we have are magnet schools, and a few overcrowded high schools. Berkeley High in particular has a pretty strange reputation; some of the highest drop-out rates AND highest college acceptance rates. The more I think about it, the more the school seems geared to specific types of people. To say I am lazy because I simply have a hard time focusing on subject matter that is completely irrelevant to my life goals is just ignorant. I love math, but never had a good teacher, and lost all interest until recently because of it. Most teenagers don't know what they want to do or who they are really, on the other hand I know quite a few people that had goals from age 12 and are currently working on getting their plans in action. Without a place to learn a trade that can be applied anywhere in the world it becomes difficult to even fathom having opportunities to travel to live new places.

Never got the opportunity to seriously get into the trades until the end of high school, and most of the time it was just me running around for 7$ an hour not learning a damn thing.

Here's a site where you can take a test to see where you are as far as intellegence type.

Hmmm... strange test. It says I am mainly visual/naturalistic/linguistic (ON A FORUM!!! NO WAY!)/ interpersonal. I am a bit confused as to what the scale means, 0-25 WHAT??? Can't it be 0-10? Is it just randomly confusing like that? Anyway...

I am going to see how accurate I am to this test, perhaps 5 tries... I am bored, so what .

If I want to smash a heap of info into my brain I walk and read.

When I was in medical school I discovered that if I walk and read my notes at the same time they stick in my head. So I'd walk 3-6 hours per day and was able to recite them word for word, idiot savant like, when questioned, even months later.

Also information put into tables is much easier to recall for me.

FIRE!

But seriously.
Read the text before bed, wake up and do the work after a nice hot shower. That's how it's always worked for me.

In my plant identification courses it always helped to walk around looking at the plants themselves. Something about moving around really helped me remember the plants, although some of the names escape me I remember stupid details about the walk itself.

Listening to music while working out and studying used to be the only way I could focus on the material. Now I can force myself into open-brain mode if I am in the right mood.

I learn best through instruction. I need the basics of any task explained to me (the more technical the explanation, the better) or I usually end up on some far tangent and waste a lot of time figuring things out for myself. Once I have a basic grasp of the concept, repetition take over.

Combining several senses helps.

Reading doesn't always work. Reading while listening to certain music or certain scents are around helps (the smell of chocolate seems to help).

When ever I wanna learn something if I repeat it ad nausem I will know it.

Also if I need to learn a procedure (like at work) I need to do it for myself. If someone shows me I will forget. Preferably I will do it alot and then I will never forget.
