Its either gonna be one of the following (unless somone sees a connection I dont); 1) Medium to Large Gretchin squad 2) Medium to Large shoota boyz squad with big shootas 3) (a far third) a small squad of Mega Armoured Nobz? 4) (an even more distant fourth) a small squad of Nobz with a painboy. A) Trukk (most of the above) B) Battlewagon (All of the above, over various FOC slots). I thnk my personal favourite would be a large squad of gretchins.. mostly for the idea of it. I know the ammo is meant to be grots but who's to know, eh? (buuut) I can see how a squad of boyz (11+) would be more oppertune with the possibilities of fearless, a compatent (and stronger) assaulty CC group and in a trukk (or battlewagon - but its too expensive for what the SAG may do plus there are better choices for a BW) albeit with only 12 boyz, but entirely immune to small-arms with a range of 60" = Meaning the ability to place well out of range of most armements.

eh, If you want shooty army, then I think the boyz would be better off being at the front line instead of guarding some mek, grots are the fluffist
Whatever you want, personally I don't give my mek a bodyguard

Actually there is another option. I attach my SAG mek to a max size zapp gun battery. THe artillery rules allow the mek to shoot at a different target than the big gunz are targetting allowing pretty good flexibility in your squad targetting. Incoming Fire at them 4 out of 6 hits the armour 10 guns. I've actually found them to be pretty decent, if only I could roll higher than a 4 on the zapp guns strength whenever I fire it at something important!

I may have to steal that idea.

Good man! See, this is why I like posting here on dakka; People do come up and surprise me occasionally.
With what I had in mind, two battlewagons are needed for Loota firebases but the third was always going to be a full crew of Zzap guns. Add in a gretchin squad to shield the second SAG mek and im happy. Question of trukk shoota boys or foot-slogging shoota boys.

Yeah...I was surprised to see someone suggesting attaching a SAG to something other than a squad of Lootas. Who are preferably in a battlewagon, next to two other battlewagons, which are also full of Lootas, and another mek in one of them that has a Mek with a KFF in it.

I understand the usefullness of the KFF Big Mek buuut..
I want to theme a deck around lots and lots of dakka. That involves atleast 30 lootas, 2 battlewagons, a Zzap gun battery, 2 SAG Big Meks.. and yeah, shooty.
Battlewagons wont be going anywhere near those SAG meks for obvious reasons. In terms of joining the two, before any other concideration, 15 lootas and a SAG are basically overkill.

Can artillery embark on a transport?

I think he meant his third heavy support choice was the zapps, not his third battlewagon.
I feel like attaching the SAG to a squad of lootas is a waste of both units. I believe they have different targets they would want to shoot at most of the time, and forcing them to combine their fire is either overkill, or not maximising their effectiveness.
If I didn't attach my SAG to my artillery battery, then the second coice would be a squad of grots, but you are making the squad cost too much then. You have to find the right balance of squad size vs cost.

Adding the SAG to the grots hardly costs anything. 67 points to be precise. Besides, the grots are a scoring unit, so you have a unit that can sit on an objective and blast away, unlike the Zzap guns.
Also, I feel that the Zzap guns are a little fragile. While the guns are still alive they're alright, but the moment all 3 of the armour 10 guns take a hit they die, leaving you with a few non-scoring grots. And I personally don't think that Zzap guns are that good anyway. Far too random for one shot, where at least the SAG uses a big template.

Its three BS3 shots at roughly str7 ap2. So thats 1.5 hits at roughly str7.
But yeah, I do like the idea of grot-based SAG meks, I may add 20 bodies to the mix rather than a min squad. Just a case of balancing 30 lootas, three battlewagons and a few more scoring Boyz squads.
