Hey guys,
Me and a mate were having a conversation the other day about how Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was not thought through.
I mean, the scene where Luke Skywalker is flying round the death star towards the hole-type thing that blows up the whole station.
He is flying at 900 MPH and still hits the hole BANG ON TARGET. At that speed, you would not get a chance to register the hole.
He would have flew straight past it. But he still shoots it and gets off.
WTF WTF WTF

No Return of the Jedi.
But I do remember that they destroyed the Death Star twice(they did it in IV and VI)
But I mean the second time.

Luke didn't blow up the Death Star in VI, Lando did.
You talking about IV? He "used the Force" duh!

return of the jedi, Luke was physicaly on the death star having a stern talking to from his dad and some old guy (emperor). Lando Calrissian was leading a flight INTO the death star's core to blow it up.
You're thinking of the first film. Torpedoes going faster than he was, missile style, hence they would hit the target first.

It was Wedge Antilles in an X-wing and Lando Calrissian in the Millenium Falcon for the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi where they enter the Death Star and bring down its' central power-core. You described the first Death Star in Episode IV: A New Hope.
It's also called Suspension of Disbelief. I'm amazed that this is your complaint where as the idea of an all guiding 'Force' is perfectly acceptable.

This reminds me of the star wars slot machine my girlfriend was playing yesterday in atlantic city. She kept hitting small jackpots landing on photos of Grand Moff Tarkin. I was watching her play because the wheel of fortune slot next to her was too sucky. The conversation went like this...
her: Who is this guy that old keeps coming up? I don't remember him from the movie...
me: That's Grand Moff Tarkin, he was in charge of the death star.
her: You know his name?
me: Yeah, he was from star wars
her: but you actually know his name...?
me: yeah, he was from star wars
her: ...
Some people just don't get it!

Well, to be fair, Luke did use the Force. However, Red Leader got off shots too, using his X-Wings targeting computer. The targeting computer (or the Force, in Luke's case) would tell the pilot when to fire. He wouldn't necessarily need to see the target with his eyes to do that.
Keep in mind that Red Leader's shots hit the the target as well, but it didn't go in. Just impacted on the surface.

I'm quite surprised really that they even let Luke fly in the attack anyway. He'd never flown in combat before and had no real experience.
I always to hear what they said back in the Rebel base after they call Luke and ask him if he's alright as when he turns off his targeting computer..
"And? What did he say? IS he alright?"
"Err.... he said... the voice of his dead friend told him to do it."
"We're so dead!"
....plus, surely it still would have been easier to use the force AND the targeting computer too ?

I'm glad someone is pickin' up what I'm puttin' down, Jin.
As to res8n's comment, I think you're not giving Luke quite as much credit as he deserves, he wasn't such a bad pilot himself. You're right that he had no X-Wing combat experience, but he did have flight experience in other craft (T-16 Skyhoppers, for example - another Incom craft with controls that were quite similar to those found in X-Wings), and also had space combat experience (the best example being the fight with the TIE Fighters after the Millenium Falcon). The Alliance was most likely low on pilots anyway, and the Death Star mission could have been their last hurrah, so if they had an extra craft and a pilot with any sort of experience who was willing to go on the mission, they were probably more than happy to send him up there.
Also, in the novelization, I believe it was said that Luke went through several training and qualification exercises in the simulator on Yavin, during the time the Alliance's analysts were going over the Death Star plans, which would make sense.

I think they mention something about having more planes than people, so they send up everyone who's remotely qualified. Which is unlikely, but it is space fantasy.
I want to know why, given a universe where you can travel between planets in mere minutes, it would take so long to move outside to position where a planet wasn't blocking the shot on the moon.

There was a sketch from some show I can't remember where Luke turns off his targeting computer and Obi-Wan begins his advice;
'Luke, use the targetting computer. It's an advanced piece of electronic equipment and will greatly improve your chances of making the shot.'

It probably has something to do with which direction they were approaching from, and how their navigation was handled. Traveling through hyperspace isn't like dusting crops. Without precise calculations they could have flown through a star or bounced too close to a supernova, and that would have ended their trip real quick. Let's get real here.
And also, once the Death Star was in system, it would have been traveling on sublight drives, which aren't anywhere near as fast as hyperdrive engines. The reality is, they probably would have come out of hyperspace on one of the edges of the system, far outside of the star's gravity well, or the gravity well of any of the planets - and far outside of weapons range of Yavin IV. Approaching the moon at sublight speeds would have taken quite a while, and it wouldn't have been possible to drop out of hyperspace directly within range of Yavin IV and its moon.

Sure, but they could have come out of light speed in a place where the planet wasn't blocking LOS to the moon. Possibly moving to the top of the system to look down on the moon. It doesn't really matter because the movie really, really isn't about plausible military manouvres by faster than light planet exploding super space stations, but if we're going to nitpick it certainly is one.
Oh, and parsecs.
