How do you know he was going 900mph? I mean, someone ELSE (norade I think) claimed that fighters in star wars could go 90% the speed of light. I don't know what to believe.
Also, Luke blew up Deff Star in IV, not VI.

Without precise calculations they could have flown through a star or bounced too close to a supernova, and that would have ended their trip real quick. Let's get real here.

As to res8n's comment, I think you're not giving Luke quite as much credit as he deserves, he wasn't such a bad pilot himself. You're right that he had no X-Wing combat experience, but he did have flight experience in other craft (T-16 Skyhoppers, for example - another Incom craft with controls that were quite similar to those found in X-Wings), and also had space combat experience (the best example being the fight with the TIE Fighters after the Millenium Falcon). The Alliance was most likely low on pilots anyway, and the Death Star mission could have been their last hurrah, so if they had an extra craft and a pilot with any sort of experience who was willing to go on the mission, they were probably more than happy to send him up there.
Also, in the novelization, I believe it was said that Luke went through several training and qualification exercises in the simulator on Yavin, during the time the Alliance's analysts were going over the Death Star plans, which would make sense.
and dont forget, he used to shoot womprats in beggars canyon before all of this mess started and that was done in a T-16...! how different could it be?

In the novel about the building of the DS the port was supposed to be removed but some contractor didn´t get the revised plans and went ahead with the wrong set.
So the DS blew up due to the average contractor Joe incompetence.

On the topic of blowing up the Death Star two wasn't It Wedge that blew it up? I thought Lando took out the core's shield allowing Wedge (One of the few survivors of the First Death Star Attack) to fire the killing shot on the Core.
Just for a bit of info, I was the mate and I kinda brought it up, we laughed much on this subject.
My thing was that it is acceptable to have Luke use the force but not...fun. It's a bit of a Star Wars cop out and a bit deus ex machina. There's a difficult situation/impossible, all hope is lost but heh. Force doodah and everythings ok.
It's really a matter of preferance because I prefer some of the plot endings that utilise a clever loophole or tie into a small event earlier in the film/tv program you have overlooked. A good example of a clever plot ending is in the Dr Who episode, Blink. The ending was very clever as he used the angel's strength against them and defeated them using it. He didn't just go Zoommgg with his brain and zap them to death with a gun.
Not that i'm especailly irate about this, i'm just a little annoyed and this is why I didn't really like the star wars films as much as I enjoyed LOTR or the recent Star Trek film.
Oh just one more thing I remembered as a wieird thing. If there is a vital component that could bring down the Death Star, then why put it in a little vent that is basically a hole in the side of the damn thing. My question-WHY WAS THERE A BLOODY HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE DEATH STAR?!

But Star Wars has (laser) swords, (Krayt) Dragons, and (Jedi) Knights!

Lando took the shot that blew the core with concussion (hi yield explosives) missiles - much more powerful than proton torpedoes.
Wedge took out the power regulators on the 'north' side (his proton torps couldn't hurt the main core.).

Sending Luke up was sort of an IG philosophy. Every shot used to Vape that sucker is one less at an important person, but that person is still a redshirt.

But Luke's use of the force didn't just appear from nowhere, it was set up as the point of the movie and the key of it's resolution. Luke met a wise old teacher who told him about the force, his sceptical friend said it was a bunch of malarky. Then the wise old teacher died, and Luke trusted in the old man's teachings in order to save the universe. Luke using the force wasn't something that came out of nowhere, it was the point of the movie set up from the very beginning.

If you want to talk about plot holes, oh lordy could we talk about the new Star Trek movies. Not that the plot holes are that important, the new Star Trek is still a cracking good movie.

Yeah, it's one of those things you have to accept. It's a big romantic fantasy movie, where the universe is saved by a handful of adventurers because one of them makes a miracle shot because he had faith in the teachings of his wise old master.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
