Subject: Heavy Bolter vs Heavy Flamer on Chimera's in a MEch Vet List

I am leaning heavily towards the Heavy Flamer as it seems on paper to be the better all around choice. The Heavy Bolter is great when using the Chimeras as a weapons platform, but with mech vets the Chimeras are generally close enough to use effectively.
Against Marines or MEQ the Heavy Bolter is negligible and versus Horde armies the Heavy Flamer seems to outperform Heavy Bolters in every facet.
What are your opinions?
I am wondering how I should put my Chimeras together at this point. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks in advance

If all you intend to do is park it on an objective and never move, NEVER EVER, then you may as well pay up the 10 points and throw heavy stubber, heavy bolter, multilaser on it.
If you *do* intend to move it, EVER, then the heavy flamer is a superior choice because it gives the tank duality; it can shoot S6 shots at MCs/light vehicles or the heavy flamer at infantry.
Melta vets tend to necessitate a heavy flamer because the tank is always moving, and whatever assault unit just murdered your melta vets tends to be bunched up to eat the shot.

Heavy flamer always if you want the dakka chimera buy a hydra, an heavy weapon squad in cover is just as good as the dakka chimera because they can recieve orders.

I normally go half and half. The Melta Vets and Command Squads get heavy flamers while the plasma vets and infantry squad get the heavy bolter.

Seconded. My storm vets get Heavy flamers on their chimeras, while the command squads sit back with HBs.

The only ig vehicle (imho) that should take a hull mounted hb over a hf is a hydra. Just more love for the ignore bike turbo boost and smf!
I can't think of a single reason why you would want the hb on anything else.

The Heavy Flamer is definitely the best option for a Chimera being used as an actual transport and not a bunker, especially for units like Vets. It's also a solid choice against footslogging and horde armies.
The Heavy Bolters works well against other mechanized armies (a multilaser and heavy bolter together can work well in taking down rhino's, raiders and trukk's) and against MEQ armies. I find they work best on Chimeras when you want to use them as firebases and not quite so much as Transports, so I find they work best when used for Infantry Squads with a heavy weapon rather than Vets or Command squad units.
Personally right now I'm running my command squad chimeras with heavy flamers, and my infantry squad chimeras with heavy bolters, as the Infantry squad units don't move much, while the command squad chimeras are very mobile and stuffed full of special weapons.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.
New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

I run tri-melta vet squads with heavy flamers on the hull and multi-laser on the top for the chimeras. Never failed.
