By now most people should have their special boxes of Bastions from Maelstrom in their grubby mits so here we go.
I pardon for the wonky quality of some of the photos but this morning has been rather taxing.
This bastion has been built with the contents from the Strongpoint boxed set where we just threw all the parts together and made things up as we went, making for a fun way to spend the evening. We present to thee, the Tiny Bastion of DOOM. Buyer beware, Vostroyans shown for scale purposes only.
We decided to break tradition and not build it as tall as those shown in the Planetstrike book, mainly because we feel like we're different and because we don't really have the storage space for really tall terrain pieces.
Here from the side, please ignore the hatch glued there to cover up the sawn away heavy bolter crenelation. It did perfectly there but we mainly stuck it there because we couldn't find a suitable door to go there without resorting to drastic hacking and sawing.
The Bastion from the top, showing off the one design flaw we put in: we envisioned the lower platform to have a quad or Icarus cannon while the upper platform would have the vox array. Sadly the funky hatchway ensures that nothing can be mounted in a great fashion on the lower platform. Oh well, gak happens.
The Icarus on a tripod.
The vox array, it has lots and lots of fiddly bits that are quite fragile. Excellent conversion fodder for command tanks though.
The quad cannon, too weedy for a Hydra but still a nice thing to plonk somewhere in your defence lines.
Okay, I've shown mine, now show me yours!

That's one Strongpoint box, so Brook has 2 Bastions, 2 Lascannons, 2 Comm-Tower thingies, 3 Defensive Lines and 3 Quad-Cannons.
This is very useful Brook. I do like the escape hatch as the doorway. I imagine that whenever forces of the Adeptus Astartes have to garrison one of these, especially those in Terminator Armour, they hate that little hatchway.
And you couldn't use the second door on it? Of you just didn't want to cut away the HB mounting? Automatically Appended Next Post: And what are you going to do with the extra four sides?

I think its from the boxed set that comes with 2 bastions and aegis lines. The bastion comes with a lasscannon and coms array. The quads come with the aegis line.

The hatch was a bit of fiddling on part of my girl while I was ransacking all our bits boxes for something useful. CoD doors are too tall sadly.
In order to get the door there I had to cut and saw away the following:
I could've tried cutting down the second door that comes with the kit but I didn't feel like wasting a perfectly good door for future projects.
As for the four extra sides, we're tempted to get another Bastion or two, maybe crank out another one like this with a taller tower.

I like the hatch , after all the front door is a little ostentatious for a first floor parapet door. Looks harder to breach too.

Just think of the hatch as what H.B.M.C. has said, an anti-marine device.

And to think, that building is only a tiny fragment of the planned Planetstrike table for GD UK.

Flashman wrote:Not mine, but here's a good use of the Landing Pad and some Cities of Death Buildings on GW website Bugger the Landing Pad, look what's underneath it. See all those tiles? These are from the new Shrine of the Aqula, which has a wonderful new floor sprue with about twice as much 'floor space' as the old floor sprue. They really better release that one separately. It's 4-panel and 3-panel floor sections will be a complete God-send to me. Heh, and I notice they've cut the spiky tops from the railing on that building. Wise move...

Nice Bastion BrookM. The Icarus would probably be better served on the highest roof anyway for LOS purposes no?
Here is a pic of my WIP Orky looted bastion (W/ removable kit bashed orky "counts as" quad interceptor gun on roof):
Nothing crazy as far as multiple kits or build, just the usual added orky modifications to make it less weedy and more "Proppa".
I may experiment with adding some barbed wire around it as well like how they worked it into the stompa in the WD article.
Still need to do a fair amount of painting, detailing and weathering, add some ore glyphs and dags, etc. But the basic idea is there...

how well do the bastion pieces compare in size to the COD building tiles? I was hoping to use 2 bastions to build a double-sized one, but I also wanted to use the COD big eagle double doors for it.. would they work?

The way the base is designed with the fire port in the middle of each side, the double door panel will not mate up unless you do some cutting and modification, etc.
I have a set of Imperial fortress/fortification pieces I am also currently working on, and I plan to modify/kit bash a bastion to integrate some of the COD tiles, I'll let you know how it goes...

Hey CT, ignoring how much it would cost, but have you ever thought of turning a Stompa into a big building?

hmm, what about the upper walls that look taller? are they same height as the COD tiles at least? if it fits I could probably rig something up where the door is attached to the upper section, and has a ramp going up to it.

H.B.M.C. wrote:Hey CT, ignoring how much it would cost, but have you ever thought of turning a Stompa into a big building?
Funny you should mention that:
I recently acquired some stompa sprues in a trade; mainly two sets of complete hull components. I already have three stompas so I plan to use these for some sort of terrain project or kit--bashed model.
My initial plan was to make two orky bastions from them, then I thought about combining them to make the main part of a larger orky fortress.
However I also realized after playing around with them the other night that It might be good excuse to act on the idea i have had for a while to build a 40k scale Gargant as when combined they make a good start to a gargant sized hull...
Now the question is if I go the Gargant route do I build an actual full on Gargant for potential use in Apoc/display piece, or do I do a partial/wrecked Gargant as a cool (yet exspensive) terrain piece?
I'm not sure which way I want to go (terrain or Gargant) at this point... Automatically Appended Next Post: Necros wrote:hmm, what about the upper walls that look taller? are they same height as the COD tiles at least? if it fits I could probably rig something up where the door is attached to the upper section, and has a ramp going up to it.
If you wanna go bigger and combine two bastion kits it will be easier to integrate the COD tiles.
For example you could have each side of the base two panels wide(ratehr then one and put a COD tile between them or book end them, etc. You'll need to make custom flooring, but you could make a masive fortress this way...
I am not home currently, I'll try to post some pics to give you a better idea of size relation between cod tiles and bastion components when I get home and have access to my stuff. I'm pretty sure a dakka thread had some pics like this already however...
