i wanted to convert an assault squad i got the other day into vanguard vets, is there anything specific i need to do to the models to make that legal or can i just say thats what they are and then go nuts with the allowed weapons?

Aside from wysiwyg, there is nothing specific that you have to do to assault marines to make them vanguard vets. For your opponents sake, and to cut down arguments, I suggest you make them discernible from other assault marines you may have in your army, but that is all I think you have to do.

Consider though, these assault marines are the big time, they ought to have tricked out armor, not just be more assault marines. If you are going to convert a squad up, you ought to go nuts and do it right. Just my opinion.

I recommend using terminator shield plates and sticking them on the shoulderpad. Then paint them in personal heraldry-- instant badassery

If you're feeling flash, try to get hold of the FW red scorpions torsos; otherwise just use nice shoulder pads

In a world gone mad, who is left to fight for truth, justice and all that gets you smashed for under a fiver....

First played 40k during 2nd edition, missed out 3rd and 4th, and haven't played 40k since 5th edition - but still read and occasionally paint

What chapter are you painting them? A simple stripe on the helm and some purity seals would be enough for me.

Here are some fairly bombproof ideas for existing chapters....
White helmets on Ultramarines/Sons of Orar (This would work for most chapters)
Bone coloured armour for Dark Angels
Black armour with Death Company markings for Blood Angels.

Hope it helps.

it all helps, its for a diy chapter, so, i can paint them anyway i want, but i will do my best to make em look veteranny, one is going to have twin power axes...(really hope its legal as conversion has been started), if only vanguard could get flamers...or i could give my termie a heavy flamer (leftover from dreddy)

You can also get the Crux Term marine shoulder pad from GW in the bitz section. All my vet troops have them, so there is no confusion about Van/Stern Guard

I used Crux Terminatus pads to show them as members of the 1st Company.
