Subject: a few questions for armies I run tyranids, eldar, and necrons

I play vs tau, necrons, orks, space marines, and dark eldar. Each of those armies is spread out though the dark eldar specializes in first turn close combats with lots of attacks and power weapons
We all play 2000 point lists and very rarely 1000
Tyranids:
I'm thinking of running a heavy gaunt/fex army with afew extras
1) is it better to run gaunts with sacs and spinefists just incase my larger creatures are taken out and I need to glace some tanks, or should I focus my gaunts on infantry only with devourers
I like the range on the devourers which means most of the time I can get hits in on the first turn but they're going to do less it seems
2)if i'm going for swarms of smaller gaunts and larger carnifex what are the best setups for doing the maxium damage?
3)are rippers any good w/wings? w/spinefists?
4) i need warriors to get my synapse to work correctly so should I go hive tyrant or warriors?
5) and are genestealers worth it?
eldar
I'm running a heavy mech list that's kind of suicidal when it comes to tanks or even tank shocks. My favorite thing besides using my tanks as giant missles is to drop out fire dragons or fire vibro cannons
1) I've seen discussion on star engines and whether or not you can ram is there anything solid taht you can or can't do it? Can you tank shock?
2) what are the pros/cons to vibro cannons?
3)bright lances on wave serpents? speaking of that what are the best armaments?
4)where is the best placement for my farseer and what should he be given?
necrons
trying to go for a destroyer heavy list
1)should i take destroyers over monoliths for points? scarabs any good instead of monoliths if they're equipped with fields? should I even take monoliths at all?
2)c'tan?
thanks ahead of time for any help

For Tyranids:
1. I usually run Gaunts with Fleshborers and WoN, but the other optimal configurations are Gaunts with Spinefists and WoN (for cheap swarms) or Gaunts with Devourers and Toxin Sacs (more expensive, but more shots).
2. I find cheap Carnifexes to be best, the Dakkafex (4 devourers = 12 S6 shots that reroll hits and wounds) and Stranglefex (S8 Large Blast and Scything Talons) are both only 113 points, do well at shooting and can still get into close combat as needed and hit with S9 power weapons or S9+2D6 vs. a vehicle's rear armor.
3. Rippers are pretty useless now with the No Retreat! rules, I find that points are best spent with more Gaunts if you want to tarpit.
4. A Hive Tyrant with Guards is a great synapse unit as it is very difficult to take out, but a large squad of warriors can be just as hard if they are equipped correctly and provide more synapse coverage. Zoanthropes are also useful for synapse as the unit doesn't have to move together, so you can have one in the back watching over Gaunts and the others in the front.
5. I find Genestealers to be very worth it, outflank them and they'll tear through most units. Also their psychological value is great, opponents will deploy in the center rather than face Genestealers, so blast weapons will be more effective. Keep the squads small so if you get into combat, you stay in combat until your opponents assault phase, so you'll be able to charge another unit.

How do you get 4 devours it says you can only have 2weapon-symbiotes

Well, for modelling purposes you have 4 Devourers, but that converts into 2 twin-linked devourers

A dakka fex only gets 8 shots. A dakka tyrant gets 12 shots... Automatically Appended Next Post: These are things that work for me...
1. I usually only take 16 gaunts (2 groups of 8 with sinefist and WoN). The provide enough cover and capture objectives after they die.
2. I use only boomfexes (ST, BS) they provide anti-horde and some anti-tank and still have some CC punch.
3. Rippers are never good.
4. Hive Tyrant w/ x 2 TL Devourers, ES, TS, SITW, and 3 Guards works great for me.
5. Yes they are. I always run at least 2 broods of them. I run them with FT and Scuttlers and either outflank them or run them behind carnifexes for counter charge.
Hope that helps!

You can, but most Tyranids are able to be equipped to shoot and still be decent in close combat. Lictors and Genestealers are the best CC models.

i heard lictors are overly expensive.
hows this sound?
either 2x devour tyrants or one devour tyrant and broodlord
2 elite carnifex with talons
1 heavy carn decked out to get the most hits
2 barbedfex
6 warriors
60 gaunts with devourers and scuttler
and 12 genestealers with scuttlers or nothing
sound like a nice round list?

Tyranids:

1) is it better to run gaunts with sacs and spinefists just incase my larger creatures are taken out and I need to glace some tanks, or should I focus my gaunts on infantry only with devourers
No, if you do spinefists, sacs is not worth it. Spinegaunts are my fav because they are VERY cost efficient, and you can get a ton of em. Gaunts are used to tie up things in CC or just to take a ton of shots at something. Sacs just cost way too much on a unit that dies to EVERYTHING.
I like the range on the devourers which means most of the time I can get hits in on the first turn but they're going to do less it seems
2)if i'm going for swarms of smaller gaunts and larger carnifex what are the best setups for doing the maxium damage? Spinegaunts, run as many as you can. Carnifex, run him as CC with 2x talons or crushing claws + talons if you have the points. I love claws, tho most people don't. CCfexes wreck house.
3)are rippers any good w/wings? w/spinefists? Spinefists are a big NOOOOOOO. They are good with wings, but Leaping is far better (and cheaper)
4) i need warriors to get my synapse to work correctly so should I go hive tyrant or warriors? Tyrant always, warriors if you have to.
5) and are genestealers worth it? Yes. But only in certain army configurations and only against certain things. A very good player will place his stuff so you won't get the genestealers into CC for a few turns, tho in larger scale games genestealers really shine because players cannot place away from table edges effectively lol

Necrons:
I run a destroyer heavy list. I havent phased out yet, so im happy about that.
Grr thats a hard choice. Although the other armies arent necesarily that big of a threat, SMs can pack alot of tanks, so i would definatley take Heavy destroyers over a monolith. H. Destroyers are beast. Theyre move + fire lascannons.
I think that you should be taking H.Destroyers at a 1200pts + level anyway, so if you want to include a monolith or two over that, go for it. Monoliths get more effective with the more you use, which is kinda why the choice is harder, but i would still go with the H. Destroyers over the monoliths. You could fit a D. Lord, 40 warriors, 12 Destroyers, and 6 H. Destroyers and 3 Tomb Spyders in 2000 pts. The tomb spyders help beacuse you dont have to keep everything so gosh darn cluttered to still get your wbb rolls. You could also do D. Lord w/ orb, Lord w/orb + pHylactery, 50 warriors, 3x9 destroyers, 2x2 H. Destroyers, and 2 tomb spyders if you're worried about phase out. 50 warriors makes the tomb world go round.
Dont go for scarabs... really. If you want anti-tank, H.Destroyers are alot more reliable, alothough you need to get a good rythm about where to put them, so that your enemy doesnt give a cover save from firing through units, and so that the destroyers themselves arent that vunerable.
I gave you a list that should work. Necrons dont have any variety. You shouldnt need a ctan. The nightbringer isnt worth 2 units of warriors, and the deciever isnt worth 300 points with crappy Iniative.

Zid is right about the genestealers. I always have my stuff 18'' away from the sides of the boards, so i can kill the f***ers before they mame me.

funny story, I played a 2000 point game against my friends feral orks for fun. I ran 20 genestealers for a lol... guess what he does? He places 25 gretchins on both sides of his deployment zone, forcing my genestealers to kill them so his lootas get a full round of shooting at each squad... lol. So yeah, smart players!

Funnier story (Not really)....
Opponent lines an entire army on one board edge so if the stealers come in that side they die or come in on the wrong side of the board. Didn't happen to me but I have heard of it happening. One reason why an outflanking army that isn't skimmer based is a bad idea.

truth, but saddly running stealers up the middles an even worse idea lol. I usually try to force em to the sides, or at least get em tied up with gaunts or rippers or something to give my stealers a turn or so to get up there.

Lol. Thats what i do. Depending on who im playing with as a partner i either put everything 18'' away, or something between me + the edges. Its not that big od a deal though, with the lists i run (40+ warriors), expecially with 5th edition getting rid of hopscotch.
Something to put on the edges would be 6 fire warriors. Theyre gonna die anyway. I love tau fodder.
