Rebuilding my old Nid army that I haven't played since 4th Ed. My question would be with the nerf to Rending is it better to take Rending Claws or a second set of Scything Talons?

I'd go with Rending Claws. Warriors are S4, yes? With no power weapons? So why not give them the next best thing?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I actually prefer twin talons, warriors are mostly to hold synapse and with dual talons are less expensive and less likely to get targeted quickly. Rending claws are good when you can get a lot (Genestealers).

If your warriors are mostly for synapse... then deathspitters are even better than any CC upgrades.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that if you're putting it in CC, and it's not a Monstrous Creature, it needs rending claws.
Otherwise armour saves will just bog you right down.

I would have to second willydstyle suggestion. Death spiters are one of the best ways for warriors to get thier points back.

If they're not shooting, go with the rending claws. As Orkestra points out, getting bogged down with Warriors sucks.

If you do CC warriors they need both types of glands, the armor save, and toxin sacs, and wings (or leaping) to be viable. As for weapons, Rending Claws and Talons on all of em. Also give em Flesh Hooks. The main use for CC warriors is to tie up units, or beat ddown normal troop squads ( like space marines). They fair pretty poorly against HQ's with power weapons or anything with AP 4 or below shots... if they get rapid fire boltered its GG!

Gona have both shooting warriors with Deathspitters and Barbed Stranglers as well as the CC warriors with talons and claws. Keep the shooting ones back to sheapard Gaunts holding objecives on my half of the board while the CC ones support Hormagaunts going after ones on their half. In theory of course. As I said ve not played my Nids in this edition yet.

Honestly you don't have to babysit gaunts. If you get a good 15-20 gaunts near an objective you can just spread em out and leave them. They don't run or fight each other if you choose for them to just stay there. I normally try and keep my gaunts away from the line of fire of the warriors, a misplaced shot will knock out a lotta gaunts lol (I once had a misplaced strangler shot kill 7 gaunts :( )

But Zid, if you choose to lurk they cannot hold objectives.

Indeed, gaunts can't hold objectives if they aren't synapsed. The only REAL success I've had in 5th is dakka warriors (2 devourers making 1 twin linked), take 4 of them, give them a better save, enhanced senses, and strength upgrade. CC just doesn't last because unless you make them 45 points a piece they just won't last and won't return you much. They are 2 wound creatures yes, but put 2 power fists or even power weapons on them and they're taking fearless saves every round and basically killing themselves.

Try deathspitters with +S, they put the hurt on at longer range than the devourers and are powerdul enough to stop transports (they are less reliable though).

I just like having rerolls to hit and rerolls to wound and getting 16 shots out of a 4 man squad. I don't know about you, but having lots and lots of rerolls is what keeps me going (i.e. feeder tendrils).

Screw points cost.....41 Points a pop but Adrenal Glands both so WS and I 5, Extended Carapace Sv 4+, Leaping, Toxin Sacs S5, Scything Talons x2 A 4, so they have fleet but they are big multi-wound Synapse Creatures, with a 3" CC killzone and a 12" Charge. 4 base attack +1 for the charge.....I love them......run them to keep up with the Horms and stay in Synapse then killing blow with a 12" CC charge walls of attacks....its just sick.

Got a game in with my 'Nids tonight, and after my near complete inability to land a Deathspitter blast pretty much anywhere useful, that twin Devourer idea is sounding pretty good. I also think I may swap out Hormagaunts for WON Termigaunts.

And then you charge into cover (should have spent 2 more PPM...)... and well die... T4 4+ save isn't gonna save you... also they do not have fleet. Also on a side note hormagaunts aren't good at all. Don't give up on them after one game. So you had some bad luck keep them and you'll see that they are good.

Their accuracy is reflected by how many pts you spend on thier deathspitters ( TL and adding =1 BS). YMMV.
Hit………… Scatter…. Hit……… % Hit…… Reroll (Hit………… Scatter…. Hit……… % Hit…) Net Hit
BS2 1/3 2/3 1/6 44% 0% 44%
BS3 1/3 2/3 5/18 52% 0% 52%
TL BS2 1/3 2/3 1/6 44% 56% 1/3 2/3 1/6 25% 69%
TL BS3 1/3 2/3 5/18 52% 48% 1/3 2/3 5/18 25% 77%
And how stupid is it that I pay the exact same point to TL it vs buying the original weapon! TL is only 50% as effective as the actual weapon which is reflected in most armies lower point costs (BUT NOT NIDS?). Look at VC. In 3rd I bought 2 VC = 4 shots = 2 hits. In 4rth I pay the same points but 1 TL VC = 2 Shots = 1.5 Hits.

Melee warriors seemed like a good idea at first but for the cost of one melee warrior you can get 2 genestealers so in my list I usually use at least one group of 4 warriors with deathspitters, scything talons, enhanced senses (even though they probably dont need it since theyre shooting blasts), and then one guy has a barbed strangler. If I have the points I use 2 groups of 4. I just think dropping all those blasts is a very gratifying experience. Most of the people I play against play orks so for me, deathspitters and barbed stranglers it definitely work the best.
