need a little help I was recently in a tournament the first i had been to and i borrowed a friends guard army i really enjoyed myself (now i might have really enjoyed myself due to the tournament or possibly the guard army) Leavign the tourney i really wanted to play a guard army, so I have been purchasing a few items as I would like to take my own army to the tournament in november in a neighboring city. my trouble is i am possibly one of the slowest painters I know and I have an itch to paint a marine army (partially because of the accumulation of some nice marine models recently and partially because i feel that it will happen faster than this guard army i am building)

So I come to you for advice,comments,criticisms. friends of mine think i should go with the guard as I came out of the tourney desperately wanting to play more guard. I have moved away from marines cause I have never gotten them to work for so it seems silly to continue but I do get the marine bug again from time to time

Anyhoo, days of massed infantry are (largely) gone, mainly because the new strat is Melta Vets in speedy SPEHSSKRAFT. I am referring here to Valkyries and Vendettas.

So since a squad of marines is about ten, and a squad of vets is about ten, painting is largely similar. If you like massed infantry you can do it, but I gleam from your post that you don't. So some tanks + vets + Valkyrie/Vendettas = win list.

Marines are similar. They work well (some could say best) as a mech list, with Rhinos and LRs galore to get your terms and powerarmor marines into battle. Since you've got the guard stuff, and the painting is quite similar (numerical-wise) I'd recommend you go guard, especially since you really like them and have had success with them. What it comes down to is what army you enjoy more, for all aspects (painting, modelling, playing).

Like Rico said, go for Guard! There are numerous models and loads of different tactics.

I believe "he who must not be named*" did a best of list for mechvet guard. I think it had like 30 troops. He posted it on "the site that must not be named**". I would probably take a look at it, as he did three very nice/competitive army lists for guard all without too many troops.

BTW, gone are the days of space marines being overused imo. I see just as many eldar players atm if not more.

Well thank you for the thoughts that all makes sense . I am just looking to have a competitive unique list.

I didnt have any sucess with the guard at the tourney, I took 2 major losses and 2 minor losses but keep in mind that was the first tourney I have ever been in and the 1st time I've ever played guard. So I was a bit out of sorts and the list was a might soft ie it was mostly infantry with rockets and grenade launchers the things that ecelled for me were orders,vet in a chimera the leman russ and the leman russ demolishor oh and the unit of stormtroopers that i didnt quite get the hang of untill the final game but they made that game for me.

For my guard I am attempting to decide whethere to use hellhounds/variants of of valks/vendettas... I almost dont want to cause I know everyone is but I understand why everyone is they inevitably become a final turn game winner

Marines are common and overdone.
