Working on my planetstrike terrain.

The rock is just drybrushed up through Greys (craft paints) and the browns are done with weathering powders.
Meteorites, Lava, and mines are done with more traditional painting methods.

I think you will see, despite being much maligned, the blastscapes do quite well with some easy techniques. For $20 they are really a steal. I just wish they were a tad smaller.

Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

Not bad, though given the option I'd still pick up moonscape over blastscape - how did you solve the thinness problem?

Me neither until I saw them in the store. They are enormous. I actually think it will be tough to get large squads across some of them in 1 move even rolling a six on a difficult terrain test.

how did you solve the thinness problem?

Not sure that is is a problem at all with this set. None of the peaks were over pulled. The piece is thin but would support any model except maybe a super heavy resin piece sitting right on the rock peaks.

I must also compliment you on those Space Marines,

currently they have been drybrushed and the metal painted. I will post when they are complete. Should look OK. Going to give them some serious oxidation treatments.

I'm a pretty new painter and was going to pick up that lava piece...was just wondering how did you do that lava? It is amazing! It really looks like its glowing, a quick rundown of techniques/colors used on it? I am a pretty new painter so...

also for terrain like this..both the rocks on the craters and the shades on the ground for the very first piece you posted what colors do you use? I only have codex grey and space wolves gray atm and want to know what else to pick up. (space wolves gray is too blueish I think for terrain though)

a color rundown of how you do that too would be great

Your stuff is really nice, only reason I'm asking is because I'm such a fan of your paintjobs and they are exactly what I wish mine could look like, still working on ma skillz

I like what youve done with the pieces and your paint job is ace. However, I still think those meteros pieces still look kinda mushy. But thats not your fault obviously

Lava .

Paint White the area you want to be lava.

Then glaze area with a thinned yellow (bad moon). leave some of the white at the highest areas. Build up yellow in 3 to 4 thin coats.
Glaze with an orange. thinned 2 to 3 coats. Stay inside the area of the yellow
Repeat with a red/orange (fiery orange?)
repeat with a deep red. I used Mechrite with a slight touch, of black.

This is all layered and maybe took a total of 30 min using a hair dryer in between coats to speed up the drying process.

The greys are all craft paint. (Cheap $1 a bottle stuff from Michaels in the US). It is drybrushed consecutively staying toward the higher points. as you go lighter in color (and touch). I use a very stiff brush moving to a softer bristle as I go up in lightness. The last highlight is with a make up brush with no force.

Prime black
Dark grey, Heavy Drybrush - 75/25 codex + black is a good match
Medium Grey 1 - codex is a good match here
Medium Grey 2 (lighter then Med grey 1) - I've used VMC london grey in this step before (I think the craft paint is "Hippo Grey")
Light Grey (considerable light) - Very light highlight (stone grey is a good match)

Brown for color is MiG pigments, Dark Earth. These are dry pigments that literally just dip in a stiff brush and swirl it around where you want. Make sure to seal it up afterwards. The mine field metals have a bit of rust colored pigment as well.

Hope this helps.

Here are the last 2 of the blastscapes. Kinda meh, but I think they are the weakest of the lot anyways.

I did the two bastions and Walls (still have 15 wall pieces and the guns to detail out) were sprayed w/ Krylon Camo Ultra Flat Green. Then drybrushed with Vallejo Camo Green followed with a dry brush of Vallejo Dead Flesh.

They were finished with weathering powders (rust and black), then detailed the doors, guns, and aquilas. Not bad for quick and dirty. Look forward to any comments/opinion.s

jgemrich , great job. I like the large bastion so much that ive built it mayself with 2 bastion kits. However im short 2 of the crenelations for the top. How did you make ith work with 2 kits ? or did you have to go to a third kit ?

3 kits. I was hoping to make another bastion but I'm in the same boat and trying to see what I can use for the top.

you could always sell off the main walls to someone making a taller 2 level bastion and either keep or sell off the lascannon. If your willing i would buy the extra 2 crenelation tops you must have

So... not going to put doors out to the landing/shorter areas on the big bastion?

No... Why would I? The roof has access hatches molded on top. A troop could supposedly access the roof top in this manner.

Just seems really odd to have this great gun mount sticking out into where they could be shooting from... and were you to mount a gun there, it would be a hazard to those on the top.

I have to second the moonscape > blastscape sentiments. I was excited about blastscape until I had it in hand at the FLGS.

I ordered a moonscape set and am much happier. My FLGS also ordered in a crater set by pegasus hobbies that is extremely similar to the moonscape (and was a couple $ cheaper) and side by side the 2 sets give me more than enough craters for PS on a 4x6 table.

http://wondertrail.com/hobby-games/minature-terrain/pegasus-hobbies-terrain/peg5214-crater-set-unpainted-5pc-terrain-by-pegasus-hobbies/prod_14453.html

I traced the footprint of the crater on some cheap but thick/plasticard (for sale sign) and then just glued down some basing sand/gravel mix on the flat areas and have very serviceable and solid feeling terrain. I would feel comfortable with just about any models sitting on top of any of these craters without too much trouble (maybe big FW stuff would be too much, but run of the mill GW models are all fine).
