I went to the press screening tonight....it sucked. Not as badly as I thought, but it was still bad.

I understand that, like the 80's version, it went through a reimagining etc. But....I didn't like the changes to Snake Eyes, the action was too fast ( which seems to be a trend in Hollywood these days....film action sequences too fast for the eye to follow....I guess they think it makes you think something exciting is going on), the big fight at the end was awful ( really guys, you are not filming a Star Wars movie).....overall it just didn't feel like GIJoe, and it just wasn't a good movie period.

The acting was suprisingly good, except for Marlan Wayans.

Better then Transformers 2, but I'm glad I didn't pay money to see it. a C-/D+.

If you were a fan of the cartoon or 12 years old, you'll love it.

Your review is all over the place.

The acting was good, but the movie was bad.

If you liked the old cartoons, you'll love the movie.

So... what exactly is your opinion again?

So if you're the target audience you'll love it? Sounds like a successful movie then.

Despite the decent acting, the movie was essentially written for 12 year olds or people who liked the cartoon.

I was a fan of the comic books, which were 139839-4890384903804 times better then the cartoon.

As a movie ( fanboy disappointment aside) the lousy story, horrible special effects, lackluster finale with unbelievable submarine action all make this a film you'll want to miss.

Starship Troopers 2 and 3 were better.

I think I might still go see it. I have an unusually high tolerance for rubbish films.

Plus it has Sienna Miller in it. In a corest/catsuit......and that is worth the entrance fee alone.

GI JOE looks like a poor man's Transformers; but then again hasn't it always?

I collected and played with the toys as a kid, and still love shouting YO JOE when I can...but with films I've yet to see like 'The Hurt Locker' out I'll probably pass on GI JOE until HBO gets it. However IGN gave GI JOE a 7/10 which is pretty high for a summer blockbuster and beats its robot counterpart's score.

I usually do as well, but the transformers sequel removed my tolerance. And since this was mentioned in the same vein as transformers I'll be passing.

I've seen a lot of positive reviews, which is surprising. Most said it was a great popcorn action/adventure movie for the whole family. Snake Eyes and Baroness have been getting the most shout outs from reviewers. Not high art, but fun and lacking testicle and fart jokes. I may catch it at an early show sometime but not I'm not in any rush.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Y'know, amazingly, this film wasn't that bad. It wasn't that good but not that bad either. I think Stephen Sommers manages to do the best with the big budget 'crap' movies. I'm not sure what that exactly means but I kind of like how bad GI Joe was.

Unfortunately, the Baroness' hotness was in direct relation to how evil she was.

Spoiler:
Needless to say, she wasn't very hot by the end.

I actually thought the acting was all pretty good as well. Of course Marlon Wayans isn't included in that statement. He was pretty weak as someone said.

Spoiler:
I was also disappointed that Scarlett and Snake Eyes were not married. The whole Ripcord/Scarlett thing was really weak.

If you liked the Cartoon you'll probably like this for the same reasons.

Make no mistake, it is bad but in kind of a good way. Unlike so many other movies of this type, I don't think it takes itself too seriously.

One last thing: Not enough Snake Eyes.

Yep, and someone says 'kun-fu action grip', and they end with a shot of the US Flagg. There's plenty of shout outs for the old fans.

It's a really, really fun movie. On the car trip back I said I liked it about as much as the first Transformers film, but everyone else said they liked it more.

The Marlon Wayans hate doesn't make much sense to me, he plays the obligatory whacky black sidekick, and he does fine in the part. Some of his lines are pretty funny. It's odd that people have chosen him to rag on because the guy playing Duke was one of the more dreadful performances I've seen. All the guy had to do was look earnest and punch evil in the face and he couldn't do that at all.

Anyway, it's a fun movie, full of all the ludicrous gadgets and ninja love. I think the film is best summed up in the final climax as we go from a submarine battles to WMDs being shot down by superfast aircraft to a hostage crisis with former fiances, then we cut to the fight between Snake Eyes and Stormshadow... my mate says 'meanwhile, back at the ninja fight'. Great fun, exactly what a big, silly b-movie should be.

For me, his character just seems misplaced. Not to mention Ripcord was never a very primary character. Beyond the movie, I find most of the Wayans pretty annoying, as are their movies. 1+1+1=Crap

Should have focused on Heavy Duty. That actor was intimidating.

I agree with a lot of this. We had fun commenting on some of the sillier set-pieces (which was most of them). Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow fighting in the power plant, "Hmm, I've seen this before with even one of the same actors." Then Storm Shadow makes his double ended sword and we all laugh out loud.

Someone earlier mentioned that the action was too fast for the eye to follow. While I agree that this is a problem too often in movies today, it wasn't nearly as bad in GI Joe.

Hmm, on the one hand I thought he played the role of the whacky black sidekick well, and that role has a long tradition in blockbusters. On the other hand, I don't really want to defend the presence of the whacky black sidekick, and I really don't want to defend a Wayans.

Can we all just agree that the guy playing Duke really sucked?

He certainly deserved a bigger part. The film probably could have worked better if it focussed on a whole range of whacky Joe characters, instead of just Duke and his black minstrel.

Yeah, that was gold.

I thought the action scenes were well done, they moved quick enough to provide spectacle and speed, but still managed to communicate where people were and what they were trying to do. I mean compare it to Transformers II, where the whole last half hour of the movie devolved into this blur of explosions and robots flying about, without any rhyme or reason for any of it.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another.
