Please, please, please share you techniques. I have about the same tanks lined up on my workbench and I would love it if they looked this good. How on earth did you do such fine work!

Haha I wasnt bragging I swear, it just happened to work out with no big setbacks or confusions.
Em En... I use an airbrush and dry pigment as well as some oils. Do a google search on mig pigments and you will find forums dedicated to all three. To be honest the best place to learn about painting tanks is obvious but a lot of people dont see it - true military modelers. That is a hobby that knows every which way to sunday how to do whatever you want to on a tank, and they dont have a lot of the odd hangups the GW community has like an airbrush is somehow cheating.

Beautiful tanks, GMMStudios. The contrasting turret color is fantastic and a rather bold choice! I'm curious: there are nine tanks here and you said they were already primed and assembled. How long did it take you to paint and weather all of these? Did you complete all of them in one week?

Yeah I did them after I finished what I had scheduled for the week - more tanks in fact. I started these paint wise on Wednesday morning. I assembled them over the course of the first half of the week while taking a break from my other stuff or just in down time in general. There isnt anything to assembling those really, and I just added some light damage, nothing too crazy. The forgeworld tanks were surprsisingly easy to assemble as well.

I have an airbrush, just haven't used it yet. I was going to order some of those mig pigments soon, since they have become a common tool that produce a lot of good results.
What oils did you use and how? If you don't mind me asking, of course. I have a TON of oils and I am eager to use them.

I just use plain old artists oils and you paint them on just like acrylics they just dont dry as fast so you can feather the edges and not get hard edges.
I use odorless terpentine, I dunno what else you could use, but thats what I use.

Ah. I have roughly 40 oil paint tubes, various cleaners, and some brush soap. I am golden when it comes to oils, but I haven't had a chance to use them. I hear a lot of the historical model painters swear by them and the results are pretty amazing. Yet, I see a lot of Golden Daemon winners using all acrylics, so its hard to break from that.
So, did you do the airbrush work, then oil? Seems logical, because I am pretty sure nothing will stick to the oil paints.
Any other advice, while I have a captive audience?

Wait an hour or two and you can seal over it if its thin, then go back with acrylics.

I use dullcote between coats then Purity as a final seal.
Purity is so matte it will mess with your painting, but its the best for photography.
Also can swap Krylon matte varnish for Dullcote. Krylon is the least matte out of all of them and with a thick coat is actually glossy. You can take Purity to a model like a garden hose and it will still dry in 30 seconds and feel like a velvet painting of Elvis.

Very Nice work there. I have been working on some tanks for my Tallarn army and have come up with a similar look using tamiya wethering powders. I think your contrast stand out better than mine, and I really didnt do any damage to the models, now I think I should have. ( I really need to get some pictures ) The blue color in the turrets is just right to make them pop and set them apart from some one elses "mars" tanks. Congrats man those are very nice looking!

Thanks!
Yeah the battle damage came out well and I think its because I didnt do a whole lot of physical damage to the model. Each one has a few dings on the hull and turret on each side and the rest is just paint weathering. Fake weathering shows up better if its on a flat surface I guess

I want to hate you but I actually want to have your babies - I'm a bad man, sorry.
Re the oils, I was speaking to a 54mm (& larger) figure painter at this year's war & peace show & he (& others he knows) just use white spirit. They also mostly use oils neat unless they've been sitting around a while.
Also re learning weathering techniques etc - definitely seek out advice from historical amoured vehicle painters. I buy the occasional military modeling mag for tips. I also have the 2 night vision DVDs which talks about how to use MIG powders, filters etc and includes some basic airbrush techniques - worth their priece for sure.
I also took a few picts of actual AFVs at war & peace & will upload them to a gallery here on Dakka as a resource - is there any way that this could become a public gallery where others can add their own photos?
|
Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

Yeah oils are gorgeous on 54mm. At Adepticon part of best painted was a bunch of 54mm painting mags and I loved those. They get some real luscious paint on those bad boys.
Doesnt work as well on 28mm infantry though....
