Honestly, the Saw franchise has started to bore me,I enjoyed them at first, but it seems each sequel becomes less inspired and predictable.
However, from a phsycological point of view I still find them mildly interesting, after all, self presurvation/the survival instinct is the strongest trait a person normaly has,so the traps that force choices between death and mutilation/somthing terrible seem to always catch my attention.

How can anybody that is vaguely human enjoy that sort of film!?!?!?!?!?!? All of the films are sick (and that's just what took me from the trailers, I wouldn't lower myself to even watching part of them), they get strung out over 5 films and now Thorpe Park's got a ride related to them! They take films to a new level. They call themselves horror films but they're not. There's not real suspense or gripping sequences or (as far as I can tell) a plot. It's just people getting tortured and cut up in a sickening number of different ways. The creators should be shot for even considering some of the horrors I've heard that go on in these films.
Personally, I'm surprised our namby-pamby government hasn't banned them, and it might be a good thing that they do.

theres a plot if you actually watch them and the plot continues movie to movie.
if theyre not your cup of tea then theyre not your cup of tea but saying someone should be shot for making it is just silly.
the movies are gory, true, but i watch them expecting that so its not a shock.

I saw the first film. The violence and cruelty was certainly a strong part of the movie, but no more than in any of the other torture porn films they've been cranking out lately. More than anything Saw was memorable because it was so crappy. The policemen acted entirely under the protocol of 'what the plot needs them to do'. No-one else really did anything, just kind of passively accepting their place in the contrived plans of the villain.
I hadn't heard much about this when it came out. A friend had a copy so we watched it, and I just accepted as another video nasty that covers it's poor acting, incompetent script and generally amateurish production by taking things to an extreme. Afterwards, as we were bagging the film one of my mates pointed out the film had built a reasonable following, much more than collection of hardcore weirdos these kinds of films normally attract. I was pretty surprised, as there were video nasties out there that were just as crappy, but at least they were so over the top I could understand the charm, such as Ichi the Killer.
Later on I found out how big that fan base was. Now they're making the sixth movie. I still don't understand what these films have that countless other video nasties don't do.

It's Jigsaws message essentially. That humanity is cowardly, and if offered a painful redemption (of sorts) or death, we will usually pick death.
His rule, for those who haven't watched the films, is that there s always a way out. It might involve a great deal of pain or even the loss of a limb (to you or another person), but you can survive his trials.
I find them entertaining enough!

Frankly torture porn replacing real horror has annoyed the gak out of me, people being disgusted at something isn't the same as being frightened by something.
The sooner this fad fades away and we get back to real scares the happier I'll be. All the people going to watch other people getting mutilated in various unpleasant ways reminds me of the end of Rome, all bread and circuses. It is quite dull imo. I'd like to see what Barker does when (or if) he pulls his finger out of his arse and remakes Hellraiser, I'm expecting good things a'la the batman relaunch.

I thought that Pinhead image was the one the guy who had done the previous pinhead makeup had submitted, frankly if it does go ahead, I think it's a let down on the previous. It's too messy and makes the Angel of Pain look more like the victim than the inflicter.

Depends on how you look at it. They want people to experience what they have experienced, so to look the victim kind of suits.

Saw is one of the worst six-packs of nonsense I have ever seen. The first WAS mildly enjoyable, but any good qualities are easily countered by the rest of the series.
Overall I think it is practically unwatchable, and utterly boring. No inspired craziness, just profuse amounts of unnecessary gore.
Hellraiser should be very interesting to see a remake as long as it doesn't become a personal spank-fest for the director and producer.

Yeah, I haven't seen enough of the movies to know, but I'd be happy to agree that message is there. But that message is pretty similar to most other video nasties, most of which contain misanthropic ideas along one line or another. I'm just wondering why Saw has reached such a large audience and is so well known among the mainstream, while other video nasties that are just as well made (which is to say 'not very') are so much more obscure. People mentioned Hellraiser in this thread, why isn't Hellraiser as big as Saw?

They keep making them because they cost about $4 to make in pull in 20 million. That is the beauty of the series to the studios. Even if not a lot of people go they almost certainly turn a profit. Also by having one come out every year at or near the same date they manufacture an event.

True. It's the Friday the 13th model all over again. Bring 'em in on time, on budget and for an established market with a high tolerance for unoriginal crap. I quiet like them. The first one is good because it was something different. Yes they went downhill, but the most recent improved with a move back to storytelling, not just killing. For the fans out there I've heard rumours there's at least two more planned.
and the first one doesn't have that muc gore in it really. You just think there is. And it's not really a horror film, i'd say more of a twisted cop film. Haven't seen a decent horror film myself for years - if anyone knows a really scary film can you point me to it please?

Three Japanese horrors films that were good enough to be copied by Hollywood. Don't read the plots. Watch the originals.
