So, I regularly use Sorcerers as my HQ in my Chaos army, because let's be honest, Sorcerers are just way too cool. Now, I love the ability Gift of Chaos, because it can be disruptive to the point of ridiculousness to the enemy's firing lines. But on occasion I've used it on my friend's multi-wound HQ unit, killing it outright and causing some major arguments.

Pg. 88 of the Chaos Space Marines Codex states the following:

If the D6 roll scores over the victims Toughness, the victim is transformed into a shapeless blob of flesh and is removed as a casualty (and, as no wounds are taken, no saves apply!) Use the model's base Toughness (not the modified Toughness for being on a Bike for example), and a roll of 6 is always successful regardless of the target's Toughness value.

So, my question is this:

What unit(s) in the game are immune to this power's ability to instantly slay? Are units that are immune to Instant Death unaffected? And if they are unaffected, do they simply take one wound or is the entire power just shrugged off? And what about Independent Characters? Are they just squishified with no regard to their beefy saves and stats? And finally, howzabout the Nightbringer or Deceiver?

The GIft of Chaos power says you may pick "the Model" so even if a character is in a retinue you pick the model not the unit so yes you can snipe independents including a hive tyrant as they cannot allocate it to someone else as it is not a wound

Yeah, I was aware of the HQ/Spec. Weapon sniping abilities of GoC... Seeing as I fight Necrons almost exclusively, it's really only useful for twisting up his Lord and preventing that orb from working... And now that I know for sure that Independents are perfectly capable of being twisted up like a ball of putty, I'll be using that tactic quite often.

But just to clarify, even Monstrous Creatures and units with immunity to Sudden Death are affected? Just seems.... iffy to me. But hey, I'm not complaining.

I greatly enjoy putting wings on him and slapping him into a raptor squad. Makes a Sorcerer surprisingly durable, and they're really no slouch in hand to hand combat, honestly.



Oh, another quick question. Gift of Chaos can be used in close combat... But can you target a unit engaged in close combat even if your psyker isn't engaged?

Yes it one shots anything with a toughness value and i would really bike him over jump packs but thats just me - he can use it while in combat with the squad he is in but i would say n0 (although stupidly) it doesnt say can be shot into combat simply used while he is in combat

There's only a 1 in 6 chance of your 6" range psychic power actually killing a Hive Tyrant instantly.

It's not bad, but it's not overpowered. Also, according to the old Necron FAQ, C'Tan can be spawned (and there's no real reason to think they can't be).

Well thank you very much, that just about answers my question. Combine the fact that C'tan can be spawned with the fact that Ahriman or a Tzeentchian Sorcerer can slam out two or three GoCs a shooting phase.... Starts making them seem mighty attractive as C'tan killers. Although the 1 in 6 is a bit against the odds...

Well, I'm a casual gamer anyway, so that should be fun to play around with regardless of its effectiveness.

I killed Vulkan with it last week ;-)

Adeptas Sororitas (WH) would have a possibility of defending against it as on a 5+ it negates psychic attacks directed or affecting (think blast template drift) the squad, or even one figure of that squad (say one sororitas and 5 IG Infantry). Other than that, I'm not sure who can really prevent it.....

Not to be blindingly obvious, but other than the Null Rod and non-psychic power affecting models, vehicles come to mind.

True that. That's one of the main reasons I play Chaos... It's good to be bad.

IDEA!!, if your independent character passes a very low morale test 25%, then although mutated beyond belief they still retain there will and fight on, hence showing the strength of there will.

No vehicles. Nothing immune to psy power.
Yes, non-instant-deathable creatures can be "gifted"

I'm surprised that noone has mentioned the Grey Knights Aegis special rule. 1D6 + Ld vs. your Ld + 1D6, if they win, no power for you!
And while we're talking about the GK, the DH still have the old psychic hood, which can block psychic powers all over the field. Add this to all their crazy anti-daemon/chaos stuff and you'd be in trouble...

Kharn is immune... much like the Null Rod dude.
Vehicles are immune.
GK/SOB have defenses against them, but are not immune.

What about necrons...

Just remember though, the Chaos Dæmons version works against Khârn (SPELL IT RIGHT GODDAMNIT) because it's not a Psychic Power.

no they're only effected by powers with a strenght value.
