Salaam aleikum everybody

Been off the hobby for a bit (now that does make me sound like an addict, now doesn't it?), but recently
I've been finding myself bitten by the bug again, sort of speak. As I'm always considering new projects
to keep me busy, I've come upon the idea of a 10th Company Scout Marine force. (Thank you
greatcrusade08 over at B&C for the pointers). This has led me to the Land Speeder Tempest (FW)

Now, it's a bit costly for a speeder, at 120 points. What it does have, is a front armour of 11. Armed with
a TL rocket launcher and an assault cannon, I can see a variety of uses for it. Not to mention, it looks
great! But scanning the interwebz, I've found little or no information about them and their uses. Have
any of you used them? Pros/cons?

...leading on to point number 2: where does it fit in the FOC chart? Quoting IA-2:

"A Tempest is a Fast Attack choice for a Space Marine Army. It may also be taken as a heavy support
choice for a White Scars army."

Now, with a "White Scars army" either being one "because I say it is" or because it includes the Khan, or
for that matter neither, how do you deal with this? With a 10th Company army having quite a few great
choices for the FA slots (Storms, bikes, regular Speeders), would it be plausibe to take Tempest as a HS
choice, even if you're not strictly playing a White Scars army? Or has this part of the rule become null and
void?

Thanks in advance, people

wa aleikum salaam

I'm pretty sure IA isn't official anyway so you will need permission to use it, given that is the case it will depend on each individual opponent. I think it's meant to represent the white scars using it differently and would say that if your army is meant to be a White Scars one you can use it, of course, you can get away with changing their scheme a bit because they aren't quite as unified I don't think.

I'm sure most people won't mind you using it as a HS choice as long as your army really is close to White Scars in organisation.

As for how useful it is, well other than potentially being a HS choice letting you make a more fluffy army it's probably not a whole lot more useful, 90 points in the new codex nets you a Land Speeder with Typhoon, which is a missile launcher that fires two shots, instead of being twin linked, I suppose the assault cannon is nice too and you get 1 extra front armour but it's certainly not outstanding (which is part of the reason you will probably not have problems getting people to agree to using it).

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

I believe that's the crux of the matter, I'd not be doing this to gain an unfair advantage.
Sure, I'd be able to choose 3 Land Speeders as HW choices, but not just any old kind of
them - specifically the Tempest, which is quite alot more expensive without being that
much better. Come to think of it, when comparing the Tempest to the Typhoon, I'm not
sure the point would ever be worth it. But being able to fill those HW slots with speeders
for added support would be, at least in a scout army.

Thanks for your input!

I just noticed, while reading the IA:2 Q&A, that the Typhoon Missile launcher used to be
quite a lot worse when it was published in IA, and not C:SM. Nowadays, the Typhoon ML
is basically the same as a regular one, making it quite alot better. With having a choice
that's almost as good (though filling a FA instead of a HW slot) means you'd be giving up
quite a bit to be able to field those HW slots.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Aside from looking cool there's no advantage to the Tempest. It's another over-priced under-powered piece of Forge World junk.

Get 'em if you want cool looking units, otherwise stick with regular Speeders.

Quite a good point that. I guess the main reason for even considering them, besides the fact that they look awesome, is if they are allowed to be
taken as heavy support choices. It would look nice, add another 360 points of fun to the list, and be quite fluffy. Regular speeders are surely
better, but sadly don't have the option of filling anything but FA slots, which I'd like to use for regular speeders, storms and bikes (so many units,
so little slots!)

Any thoughts on the FA/HW slot issue?
