1ST POST !!! Welcome me to Dakka Please. Just kidding.

I want to seek the opinion of the fine dakkites on why people in this game seem to take it much more hardcore then the other games I have played. Especially at the high tournament level. I have played numerous other games and have success at most of them on the national and world tournament scene. I cant say I have won any great events, but I have always placed high in the tournaments so I have had a chance to see the various ways people take those games at that level. I have never heard the amount of horror stories involved with this game in any of the others, at least not on any constant basis. It seems there is always some drama where someone has cheated, or the venue is cheating the players, or the attitudes of the players is asshatish. Is it just me or does it seem like this game brings out a lot of ill will and win at any costs mentality. I like winning as much as the next guy, and I reckon I am a mixture of a tourney/beer and pretzels gamer but it looks to me that this game is great at making the buttholes come out.

Because its alot of time and $$$ spent into finishing something.

The game itself isnt hard core or anything... but the effort.
So yes people become bitter and elitists sometimes.

but im afraid to post and get hanged .

I have not found the level of competition and "want to win" attitude any different for other tournament games I have played.

What I feel makes the big difference is that GW has so many "gray areas" in the rules and has officially adopted a "well...we make models, not rules, this is a game for fun don't'cha'know" attitude while also fostering and supporting an active tourney scene. Needless to say, this can lead to extra angsty tournaments and cries of cheating. No other tourney game I've ever played had such a hands off approach from the company that made it as far as rules questions went.

I for one prefer home games or small FLGS games,in this atmosphere comradedre and common sense tend to rule.

The reason is because the rule set for this game is so much different than other competitive hobbies like it.

First off, there are tons of grey areas in the rules so this leads to multiple rules disputes constantly (since they never get cleared up, no errata)

Secondly, the rules are so much less known overall. Lets be honest, most players don't own every other single rulebook, so a lot the time they have to take their opponents word on things, which makes cheating easier.


Believe me, people try and cheat all the time at high level tournaments of all sorts. Its just with most games, its a lot harder.

I'm on the same wavelength as the OP; Beer, pretzels, dice, tobacco use only instruments, fun and goodtime gaming. But at the tourneys you do see a lot of buttholes. But I have found that the cheaters tend to get weeded out and once shenanigans has been called they tend to vanish altogether or come back repentant after a year or so from the gaming wilderness.

Beer and pretzels is the way to roll at tournaments too.

That's how we play at my club, and at tournaments.

If they don't allow booze at tournaments, then we play somewhere else.

The game is much more funner with the beers.

You don't get much more casual than the guys I play with. Beers and mates and dice rolling.
We just do tournaments the same way. We aren't the ultra competitive players.

Yes, it's fun to win, but it's not the be-all and end-all of the game. We honestly don't care if we lose if our opponent isn't a donkeycave (if they are then the game's gonna suck regardless).

It's (tournament play) about playing with mates you don't normally play against.

Sorry if I was misunderstood chromedog,I actualy agree with what your saying/have said,I,like you prefer the more "relaxed"beer & friends gaming,
instead of the " OH MY GOD I MUST WIN!" I tend to see at tourneys.
In all truth I'm sure I'd love gaming with people like you and your friends.

I think people are taking this game to hardcore - when 40k the game itself isn't really.. a much competitive game.

This is my whole oppinion though.

Winning in 40k = doesnt equate to winning in life.

If i lose - i lose and go on~ lol.

Thats just me though.

Some people just get so riled up.

I have not played in many tournaments, but I would sure as heck want to play at these beer and pretzel tournaments .

Having something to drink at a tournament is always good.

While there is a lot of wailing about all sorts of shenanigans going on, I think it's mostly just a matter of what people talk about. A thread titled "Oh man! I played a nice game with a guy at my store!" isn't going to get very many responses. It's like the news reporting whatever gets watchers.
