Watching Episode 3 again, and am at the bit where Yoda is fighting Palpatine.

And something struck me. Every single time Palpatine uses his Force Lightning, it goes tits up.

Mace Windu reflects it back, nearly killing him.

Yoda causes some kind of feedback, and only doesn't go on to kill Palpatin due to a dodgy landing and taking his chance to leg it.

And we all know what happened when he used it on Luke, don't we (oooarrr Maaaastur. Get thee down thar shaft...oooooarrr!).

From this, I can only conclude the Emperor was very much an optimist, believing 'third times a charm'. Had he taken the pessimistic approach of 'bad luck comes in threes' he might not have had that rather inadvisable shaft/plummet interface.
