The Eye of Terror

The abridged Journal Of Fio'El Vior'la Greensight, (named posthumously) Called Simply Fio'El Vior'la at the time of events.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 1.
I am excited to be working on this project under Noble Aun'Ui Vior'la Mont'vah'la and Fio'O Vior'la Sho'kais. Until now the Greenskins have been a thorn in the side of the Tau'va and a blemish upon our empire. This ends soon. The Fire caste, upon a recent victory over their brutish kind, brought us several samples of what they believe to be the muck from which they spawn. Subsequent testing confirmed this, and revealed them to be, shockingly, some form of plant matter. Fio'O Sho'kais, in his wisdom and vision, suggested we attempt to, under controlled conditions, breed some of the greenskins, so that we of the earth caste might run further testing. The Ethereal caste, after much deliberation, agreed that this course of action was for the greater good. The facility is currently under construction in an isolated part of desert on a 3rd sphere world, to which we are currently en route. I was told the name, but in my excitement have forgotten it.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 4.
The trip was uneventful and swift, the Air caste are skilled at their craft. The main containment facilities are still under construction, thankfully our quarters were constructed first, so we do not have to sleep on the sand at least. The laboratories are operational in a limited capacity, so we are to isolate and attempt to replicate the Greenskin spores from the muck the Fire caste provided. I look forward to the challenge.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 6.
Little to report. The Greenskin spores are deceptively complex. Far more complex even than the brutes that they spawn. It appears as though they contain more information than our most advanced memory-storage, but to extract this in any meaningful form is currently beyond our knowledge. Future earth caste engineers may read these notes and mock our foolishness, I simply ask of them to consider generations even further removed from this one, who's knowledge exceeds theirs.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 7.
The primary containment facilities have been completed, and populated with the greenskin spores, as well as fertile topsoil, some simple proteins, and several varieties of plants.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 8.
The spores are growing surprisingly quickly. We have requisitioned more supplies to sustain them, as it has become apparent that with this rate of growth they will go through resources almost twice as fast as we predicted.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 13.
The plantlife we planted is almost entirely either dead or mutating. Pools of muck have begun to form, as well as some form of fungus have begun to grow. Nothing of particular interest yet.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 24.
The fungus has completely dominated the ecosystem of the containment facility. The facility has been completely closed off, and the airlock filled with a super-strong carbon-composite. Camera drones have been deployed to allow us to continue to observe the growth.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 29.
Several of the pools of green organic matter have begun to grow small lumps. We are unsure what these are, and we are afraid to tamper with them with the drones. We will simply observe.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 31.
It's unprecedented. It is truly amazing. The solid lumps of organic matter have taken a bi-pedal form. In Containment Facility A. Fio'O Sho'kais seemed equally amazed. The small orkoid appears intelligent, and it have begun to cultivate the mushrooms. It is about a third the height of one of our caste, maybe a fourth the height of a Fire Warrior.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 36.
Several more of the Orkoids have spawned in each of the containment facilities, as well as several varities of more beastly and obviously less intelligent forms. I believe they number over thirteen now. We have deployed the subterranean paths to connect the facilities.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 42.
Several more of the smaller Orkoids have spawned. Upon discovering each other they, amazingly, began what appeared to be conversation, which quickly devolved into violence. Two of the smaller, more intelligent species died in the fighting. He was cast back into the muck. I almost feel pity for them. They appear to be getting larger also, almost half our height now.

Kai'rotaa 1 Rotaa 64.
There must be over 70 of the smaller varities now, perhaps more of the beastly form. They seem to be organizing into two tribes, which regularly fight each other and only slightly less regularly fight amongst themselves. They continue to spawn from the muck larger and larger. The largest among them is almost as tall as one of the earth caste, though perhaps half the weight. There is no true way to measure him, as they flee if one of the camera drones come too close. We have named him Big Green.

Kai'rotaa 2 Rotaa 1.
Containment Facilities A, B, D, and F have been taken over by one of the tribes, while C, E, and G are controlled by the smaller of the tribes. Tribe A contains Big Green. An Ork specialist is scheduled to arrive in the next few days.

Kai'rotaa 2 Rotaa 4.
The ork specialist has arrived. He tells me the smaller varities of the creatures are called “grots” by the Orks, and the one we have been calling “Big Green” would be, in the wild, one of the Rank and File Ork boys. Several others his size or slightly larger are spawning.

Kai'rotaa 2 Rotaa 34.
An exceptionally large Orkoid spawned this morning. Larger than a Fire Warrior. He quickly asserted his dominance over Tribe B, killing several dozen of them. They have begun to build crude housing using the mushrooms, as well as some of the mutated plant matter. They still fight each other a lot. There must be over 300 total of the smallest variety and the beasts (I am told they are called “squigs”, were they not so repulsive I would find this humorous) and perhaps a dozen of the larger orks.

Kai'rotaa 2 Rotaa 43.
Noble Aun'Ui Vior'la Mont'vah'la has expressed his concern over the amount of resources they Orks are consuming. Since the largest one spawned there have been several more of the larger variety. Tribe B has taken over Facility F, killing and devouring the Orkoids there.
I almost feel pity for them, but then I remember that had they won they would have done the same thing to the invaders.
Barbarians.

Kai'rotaa 2 Rotaa 49.
They are spawning larger and larger. Tribe B took control of Facility B. Big Green was apparently very displeased upon hearing this, and immediately launched a counterattack. I estimate about 100 deaths. There are perhaps 400 total now, hard to count as they all look so similar. They seem to be spawning 50% Large variety and 50% of the small variety. The “squigs” are too numerous to count. The larger variety eat them.

Kai'rotaa 2 Rotaa 51.
They have taken to throwing stones at each other, and the camera drones, now. A camera drone was lost, and the Orks were recorded carrying it off and picking it apart. Three exeptionally large Orks spawned overnight. Tribe B has taken over all of the containment facilities. Big Green was killed.

Kai'rotaa 2 Rotaa 60.
One of the largest Orks was recorded holding what appeared to be a piece of the camera drone attached to his arm. We have no idea what this means. Fio'O Vior'la Sho'kais says he probably took it as some sort of prize. I do not doubt his word. Despite one tribe controlling the entire Main facility, there is still enough infighting to put even the Mont'au to shame. There must be 500 of them by now. Half of them are the small variety, and they seem to be slaves for the larger ones, who are themselves slaves to the largest variety, of which another spawned this morning. I am told Orks can grow larger than Crisis suits, though I do not see how that could be, as the largest ones in the facility, after nearly 3 Kai'Rotaa, are maybe 2/3s that size. We have lost a second Camera Drone.

Kai'rotaa 3 Rotaa 12.
Massive fight among the Orks today. We lost 3 More Camera Drones. The two remaining are recording the casualties as we speak. There seem to be no survivors. We are drilling the airlock back out, as we plan to, as soon as he arrives, send a Fire warrior in with a specially modified crisis suit, to collect some samples for us.

Kai'rotaa 3 Rotaa 15.
The Fire Warriors arrived today. Large one by the name of Shas'Ui Vior'la Shovah Kais Mont'yr A large and, for a Fire Caste, intelligent one. The Airlock is drilled open, and we are ready to send him in. The Camera drones report no more Orkoid activity.

Kai'rotaa 3 Rotaa 15 Dec 8.
I was awoken in the middle of my sleep cycle to some grim news. We have lost contact with the Fire Warrior, as well as losing another Camera Drone. We sent in the 4 spare Drones now that the Airlock is open. All 5 are searching desperately for him. The Orks are more active than we previously thought apparently. This is bad, all the weaponry that crisis suit had was a pointed part on the hand hardpoints for collecting corpses. We may have lost him.

Kai'rotaa 3 Rotaa 16.
Found him. He slew three of the medium sized orks and one of the largest variety with the scant weaponry. The Noble Ethereal tells me he is likely to be promoted for this. I agree with the Ethereal, that was truly an act of Heroism.
We are resealing the airlock, as the Orks are obviously unfinished with their violence. A Hunter Cadre is being called in, as we have all the information we need on the Greenskins for now, and we now wish to destroy them without harming the test facility.

Kai'rotaa 3 Rotaa 17.
The Fire caste has arrived. They sent in two teams of fire warriors, a squad of stealth suits, and 4 crisis suits, among them the Shas'ui from before. They killed several dozen of the Orkoids before making a shocking discovery In containment facility D. A small hole had been opened in the side wall. Small enough to hide behind the thick foliage, but large enough for any of the Orks to have escaped. We do not know how long that hole has been there. Piranhas and pathfinders have been deployed to hunt down any of the escaped Orks. Unfortunately, several miles from the Facility there is a large forest. There could be any number of them in there. Ethereals be with us, and forgive our foolishness.

Kai'rotaa 3 Rotaa 18.
The earth caste is being evacuated. There is a ship in orbit, but only a single transport ship available to take us to it. It can only transport 30 people at a Time. The Fio'O and the Ethereal of course go first, taking several of the Fio'el with them each run. I am to go on the third run with all the men under me.

Kai'rotaa 3 Rotaa 19.
(this entry was scratched out, it is translated as best those who recovered it could)
I don't know what to do. Out of the forest. I don't know. Large beam, must have been the camera drones, I don't know. Fire warriors everywere, recovery mission. No survivors. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. How can the Orks do that? They can't make a weapon out of a Camera Drone and Organic Sludge! I don't know. They blame me. I know they do. They're coming for me now. The Fire Warriors, the Orks. I don't know

Kai'rotaa 3 Rotaa 19 Dec 5.
I'm sorry for that. My head was rattled.
The ship carrying the Ethereal and The Chief Planner was shot down. I don't know how. It was the Orks, that was all it could have been. I don't know how I don't know why all I know was that as the transport was flying over the forest a gigantic beam of light erupted from the forest. The first one missed, but several more appeared, just as quickly. They shot down the transport. They Killed The Noble Ethereal. THEY JUST KILLED HIM. The Fire warriors are conducing a rescue mission. Hopes are grim. The worst of it is.

We're stranded here. The manta carrying the Fire caste has no more transports, and they are not willing, for whatever reason, to come down themselves. We're stranded here until the Orks are taken care of, or the Ethereals order them to rescue us.

The Fire caste will see us through.

I know some of it might not fit the fluff perfectly, but hey, at least there's no marines using multilasters

Cool story bro. Proves that Orkses is da best, an' no blue-skin runty 'umie-fings can krump 'em.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

How can the Orks do that? They can't make a weapon out of a Camera Drone and Organic Sludge!

This is the best line in the report.

Seriously, excellent piece.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

I'm tempted to show it to the fa/tg/uys on 4chan so they can write an Orky rapefic.

It would be a repost, I posted it there first, several months ago actually. I only recently found it in some forgotten corner of my hard drive and decided to post it here.

Really? I see. Maybe you should upload it to 1d4chan so everyone can read it anytime.

Really great story! As a reader, who of course knows the Orks and how they work, I was thinking from the beginning "This will end bad...this will end bad...this will WAIT, DON'T SEND THAT POOR FIRE WARRIOR IN THERE YOU-...darn, they did...this will end bad..." Really got into that story. Good writing. Only possible negative critique I'd have is that "there's a hole in the wall" seems rather blunt for the reason of the orks escaping. I could imagine the first mek of the brood to build some fancy Ting-dat-makes-da-lights-on-da-wall-go-out...some kind of electronic countermeasure device that screws with the Tau's sensor arrays that are there to make sure there are no orkoids outside the containment areas. (Because having no sensors like that would be naive even for naive scientists, I think. )

Again, good story!
