For me it would have to be the Grand Tournament. Basically meaning your the best player around. It requires brains not just a steady hand, also there is only one Champion while there are many different winners in Golden Demon tournaments.

Goldem Daemon. If I could paint that well I wouldn't care about winning. Plus, a grand tournament could be decided by luck in a close game, I doubt that GD judges roll a die to decide close painting scoring.

I gotta go with the Golden Demon.

I think both need equal talent and skill for their respective area. But I have always appreciated the visual aspect of the hobby over the competitive.

Sometiems i am in awe of what the creator did conversion wise and painting. Even some of the lesser technical stuff has a fantastic WOW factor.

I can remember more painters' names and the models they did than I can Tourney winners.

But then, there is the visual as well as a name to jog the memory.

True Golden Demon does need talent but to be no 1 at playing the game is quite special.

Luck can win a GT but not a Golden Demon so I voted for the one I'm least likely to win.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)

I'd rather have the GD. I'm a good player, if not very competitive, but I feel like I'm a better player than painter. It would be a much harder test of my skills to win the GD than a GT, and therefor all the more rewarding. Of course I wouldn't mind getting both!

Tee hee!

Yeah, I voted for GT also. I'd rather be able to outplay the majority of people than prove that I can make a really awesome mini if I spend 3-4 months painting it. There are other things I'd rather be doing with my free time.

Id rather spend said 3-4 months in my basement playing games with friends practicing than 3-4 months in my basement by myself painting one model that is of no practical use. So I am voting GT.

Golden Demon all the way.

once you have the skill to construct and paint a model to that standard, then for the rest of your life you can build and paint to that standard.

I have won tournaments in the past, doesnt mean I can win tournaments today. The game itself is fickle and if GW was to collapse as a company what would your GT win stand for? not too much. Award winning painter though? you can move on to other game systems, or just start building actual models instead of toy soldiers.

But it still takes said 3-4 months to do one mini. Good luck making an army. Many GD winners dont have fully painted armies and thats a shame.

This depends on the painter, I just won the best 40k single mini at Necro this year, it took me less than a week to assemble and paint the model. Also, I imagine many GD winners dont even play the game, and are more interested in painting.

As painters get better they get faster with the effects that they are trying to achieve, being able to do them in as few a brushstrokes as possible to create the cleanest paintjob possible.

Golden Demon, totally.

Tournaments require a lot of skill, especially in a five game tournament like a GT. But, there are so many factors outside your control that can mess it up - or make it just go your way.

For example, if you play against the 21 KP army in a mission that requires you to hold 5 objectives, and the 2-scoring-unit army in the KP game, you've obviously angered the tournament gods. If you get to play against the 21 KP army in the KP mission, and the 2-scoring-unit army in the 5 objective mission, then you may have been handed a two wins...

While it takes skill to capitalize on both of these situations, there is also a lot of luck involved in what matchups you have to face, and they can be equally important in determining a winner.

Golden Demon, on the other hand, is all about your own skill. There are no lucky matchups, or easy rounds. If you win one, you know it was all about your own skills.

P.S. - for those who say 'golden demon can be bought' - that's cheating. You can cheat to win a tournament too. I don't think it is relevant to include cheating in the discussion.

What? Do you honestly think that all it takes to paint well is to have a steady hand? That no thought goes into it? Also, there are multiple demons to be won becuase there are multiple categories. If that's where you're going with this then a better comparison would be made to the Slayer sword, of which only one is awarded per event.

nightshade_eyes wrote:Golden Demons can be bought.

Which is cheating and not winning.

sidstyler wrote: I'd rather be able to outplay the majority of people than prove that I can make a really awesome mini if I spend 3-4 months painting it. There are other things I'd rather be doing with my free time.

It usually takes about 30-100 hours to create a competition winning miniature, sometimes much less, depending on the level of competition at the event, the skill of the painter, and the complexity of the conversions.

PanamaG wrote:Id rather spend said 3-4 months in my basement playing games with friends practicing than 3-4 months in my basement by myself painting one model that is of no practical use. So I am voting GT.

Note about painting time above. Also, a GT is of practical use?

PanamaG wrote:But it still takes said 3-4 months to do one mini. Good luck making an army. Many GD winners dont have fully painted armies and thats a shame.

It takes about one to two weeks usually. Also, you know that GD winners don't have fully painted armies and that is in fact a shame? What are you basing this on exactly? Also, just because you can paint to competition level doesn't mean that every single miniature you will paint will be to that level. Honestly I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out your logic behind these statements.

GD.

While I play the game, to a greater extent I'm a painter and modelmaker.

I stopped gaming for 'blocks of wood' back in the 90s (an aussie expression, referring to the plinths various trophies come on. Serial trophy winners are also referred to as "lumberjacks".)

OTOH, having the sword would be cool.

I'd have to go for a GD. But a GT win would be awesome, especially with a GD level painted army.

Clearly I suspect that, for the most part, this thread would tend to separate the gamers from the hobbyists. And yet...though I am by far more of a gamer then a hobbyist I would much rather win the GD then the GT. Many people above have had good reasosn for this, and many of those apply to my reasoning as well.

Also, I would add that, as a gamer who likes to have a lot of armies and has seen what GD level mnis sell for on eBay, if I could paint to a GD level I would have hobby that could finally consistently pay for itself.

Win a Golden Demon and you get a Slayer Sword, correct?

What do you get for winning a GT? Unless it is a grander trophy than a Slayer Sword I'm definitely gonna go with the GD.

Hanging the Sword over the associated mini/diorama/whatever just feels like a more tangible and visually impressive trophy display than having to explain how you got your GT trophy for "winning a few games".

The Golden Demon, hands down.

It would mean that I was a good painter and irl I'm not and always want to be, I am far more envious of the amazing works of art I see on dakka and other sites than of someone who's won several rounds of playing the game.

(Not to belittle tourneys or those that participate in what is a very important aspect of the hobby and maintaining light of the community).

I admire someone with the skill and dedication to paint a GD miniature more than someone who can develop tactics for what is essentially a very limited tactical game.

It is quite possible though that I admire GD more because I feel I would have an outside 1000-1 chance of winning a GT, but I know I could never win a GD.

Hi

For me, the GT is the big prize, because to win you need to be good at every aspect of the game - painting, sportsmanship, and battle.

Then again, I won the last Canadian Grand Tournament (with its very low turnout), so I guess that leaves winning a Gold Daemon as the one great GW official feat that I have not accomplished in this hobby.

For me, an even better feat would be to win the team tournament at Adepticon. That requires excellence on the part of four people, a very high level of creativity, and you are competing against a truly wide field. A worthy feat for any four players.

Cheers,
Carlos the Craven
