for usefulness? a predator. Why? a vindicator has a 24 in range and it can only fire the cannon if it has not fired (unless you are playing templars and give it POTMS). Pie plates cannot reliably kill tanks, so i dont think its that useful.
Predators can be anti tank and anti infantry. Predators can fire while on the move. Predators' anti tank is much more reliable (even though it is 1 str lower) than the vindicator. They both have the same front armor, so that is not an issue. Oh and you can make a predator cheaper if you are worried about points.

They both have their uses. Vindicators scare the living  out of most people and are firemagnets, but have to be pretty darn close to shoot and with all the cover saves goin around...
For anti-tank - Predator Annihilator
For anti-light infantry - Predator Destructor
For anti- meq - Vindicator
For anti-transport - Predator Annihilator and Destructor

Depends on how I'm playing. I like running 3 vindy's with my Deathwing, but prefer 3 preds for my reg marines.

S10 is just so hard to get on ranged weapons that I think this makes it more useful.
You can get lascannons elsewhere.

24" range isn't a big deal when you start 12" into the board, move 6" and then fire. You can reach a big chunk of the board this way.
S10 plates sure can.

Vindicator can kind of hunt down both infantry or armour, but the Predator would be better for those. Dedicated > ability to. Besides the Vindicator can make great bait for traps. Also having your army in a lage group marching across the field with the Vindicators has worked for me before against Tyranids. That was only one Vindicator as well.

Yeah, I have a Predator for my marine army, and it seems to help me much more than the Vindicator. The ordinance plate is certainly handy, but the range is too short to make it worthwhile.
