Wow...

So I haven't watched the Daily Show in quite a while, so I have been catching up on Hulu. In a word I think it is genius, and I am really glad that they have found new material to... erm... work with . John Stewart is a FANTASTIC interviewer and the questions he asks really do justice to my queries into the more important happenings.

Check it out on Hulu, it is well worth your time.

I think this is one of those shows which works all well and good in america, but why they show it here in the uk I have no idea. However it works over there, over here it comes across as the most unintelligent satire on television. It makes Have I got news for you look pretentious, which it really isn't, it's just intelligent. It says a lot when one of the writers and so called 'correspondents' on the show is John Oliver, someone who used to appear on satire show Mock the Week over here, and wasn't at all funny.

You guys have Charlie Brooker, which is not the same but in fact much much MUCH better... Just to be clear Charlie Brooker is a Fascist scum-bag who likes to poke holes in stuff.

Being a Fascist scum-bag myself I fully appreciate his humor, and wish him the best in his Fascist endeavors .

"Note"
The Colbert Report is okay... but Colbert is just very conservative and we don' like no stinkeen extreme confucists.

Furthermore I love the daily show. I find it's humor clever and the subject matter usually well chosen for it's target audience (which I currently fall into). Do you Brit's just see it as crass non-sense? It'd make more sense if you were drenched in the overly conservative media of the U.S. I believe.

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

Yeah, but Stewart is practically cheating. Regular news media has to worry about saying exciting stuff to get ratings. Stewart gets ratings by being funny, so he can actually be honest about the stories he's covering.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

He is clearly quite a democrat though, but his interviews are quite unbiased on the whole. He does not present himself as anything other than a jester who asks some smart questions... and some serious questions that the people sometimes have to try and wriggle out of .

He is certainly left leaning. He is perfectly happy to attack the Democrats, but as well as the usual attacks he doles out to everyone for their nonsense, he also attacks the Democrats for not being left wing enough.

He's a pretty good example of why the obsession with 'bias' is so pointless. Stewart is no more or less objective than anyone else, and approaches subjects from his point of view, so people can cry bias over his approach as much as they could over anyone. But he approaches the subject with a level of honesty and integrity that you don't get that much of in traditional media these days. That's what really matters, honesty not objectivity.

I suppose anything he says is controlled on some level by Comedy Central.

He is still talking from his perspective most often, not from some political viewpoint being funded by a huge company or governmental organization. Besides this he is a comedian, so his points are usually quite intuitive to say the least.

It isn't his material necessarily, it is the way that he holds himself together and really sticks to the real point of the conversations he is involved in. Down to earth, very good for PR .

I've always wondered if people cry about objectivity in other parts of the world. I've always suspected that its an American obsession which walks hand-in-hand with the cultural bias towards moral universalism, but I've never bothered to do the research to check.

Also, the Daily Show is good. I quit watching it for awhile, after the material became predictable due to the predictability of the daily news. Started watching intermittently awhile back and its much better.

Tangentially, the Colbert Report was only really funny for a season. After that I think the Faux'Reilly shtick got tired. Still love "The Word" though.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

I'd never seen the concept until I started following US politics. I read an article recently talking about how wingnut reactionaries have been in the US for a long time, but what's different right now is that the media has neutered itself because of it's fixation over showing both sides of the issue regardless of the merits of each side. Instead of informing people about the reality of what is really going on, they get a talking head from each side, have them yell at each other for three minutes and never check the factual claims made be either of them.

I think it was a bit of a stretch to claim this represents the whole of the issue, but it likely plays a part.

It's hit and miss. Colbert is a really funny guy, but I find the best parts are when he's just doing straight up comedy, it's rare that there's any really good satire. Though the satire of Glen Beck's War Room came pretty close.

I have a theory that we are actually in an "alternate" universe due to the 80's happening 30 years too early... just a theory minds yahz .

I prefer Colbert over Stewart despite being somewhat of a pothead myself. They're both great comedians however Stewart's mannerisms and the like can get old for me pretty quick; I even prefer the much hated Bill Maher over him.

All of the above are quality entertainment though.

If only George Carlin was born a little later and had an awesome agent; I would've loved to see what he could have done with a TV show but thats assuming his talent could carry over well like the rest of these guys.

Check out the new episodes on Hulu, it is a great way to get minimal commercials... and Hulu even forgets to show the ads sometimes .

Gotta love Hulu though

Jon's job is to be the know it all that points out the inconsistencies in our leaders, weather they lead from Washington or from in the boob tube, and no matter where they come from, left or right (Though I must admit the Right gives much more ammunition, and Joe Biden's too easy a target on the left).
