Hi guys,
Im really struggling to paint my Imperial Fists at the moment. Does anyone know a good way of painting them from a black undercoat? I would really appreciate the help.
Cheers,

Iyanden Darksun is your friend. It's a Foundation paint, so it goes on nice and thick (but be careful how much you apply) and doesn't leave gaps for the undercoat to show through. A few highlights with Golden Yellow, and bam! Instant yellow!

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Yeah, I tried that already. I suppose it looked kinda' good but now that i look at it again i think it was just a dodgy undercoat that made it look off. Thanks for the advice, ill try that now!

I tried to do the Imperial Fists. here was the steps I took, from a black undercoat.
1. Paint model Golden Yellow. Model comes out blotchy and patched. And too dark.
2. Paint model with Iyanden Darksun. Apply 2 coats of Golden yellow. Model comes out less dark, still blotchy.
3. Paint main areas white, apply Iyanden Darksun. Apply Golden Yellow. Model comes out too light in areas, too dark in others, and still blotchy. Model unavailable for further analysis due to high speed impact with wall.
4. Frothing and near mad with frustration, buy supposed 'matte' yellow spray paint from Wal-mart. Model comes out too dark in interior areas, way too bright on upper surfaces, and glossy as silk tie.
5. Give up, paint model green, and play Salamanders instead.
I dont know if this helps, but seriously, yellow is the hardest color to paint, imo.

There's an absolutely gorgeous IF army at a local GW near me that they used the GW Spray Gun to apply the base coat with. I'll find out what they used and get back to you. I'm almost positive they used white primer though. Getting yellow to go over black is like getting HBMC to shop somewhere other than Maelstrom.

I painted some Fists to antagonize a friend of mine. I used:
1. Spray Black
2. Drybrush Iyanden Darksun
3. Drybrush Golden Yellow (made two passes to bring out more detail)
4. Applied GW yellow ink to brighten without demolishing shaded areas.
5. Painted detailing and such.
I'll see if I can't get a pic up later so you can see the results.

There are many different ways to do yellow. Personally I just do the white undercoat and then paint on sunburst yellow. It an almost painfully bright yellow, but it works. To tone down the brightness a bit I usually go over the model with a watered down brown.
Honestly, if you've based your models black I would suggest just stripping it off or just re-basing them with white. It makes it much easier.

Get golden yellow cell-vinyl paint by cartoon colour.

My FLGS carries it, shouldn't be to hard to find. It will go on yellow no matter what you put it over.

The key to Yellow is to use a white under coat. I use the Following method for painting yellow.
1 Prime with Tamiya Fine Surface primer
2 Paint a 2:1 water to Iyanden dark sun mix over the entire model and allow to dry
3 Repeat step 2
4 Highlight with Golden Yellow
5 Wash entire surface with Gryphon Sepia
6 Highlight again with Golden yellow
7 highlight layer of sunburst yellow
8 Extreme Highlight of sunburst yellow with a little bit of white
and there you have it

Man! There's been so many "How to Paint Imperial Fists?" articles created already... I was browsing through them last night! There's so many ways... Too many ways. However, although advanced, this is the one that I was most stunned by: http://cbstudios.co.uk/#/tutorial-imperial/4525393843 Go check it out! (Chaos Bunny Studios, BTW.) If you're wanting to paint them a diffent way, check this recent Imperial Fist P&M Blog: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/238692.page I hope that helps. I'm not too sure how to hide links, but that shouldn't matter.

1. Start with a basecoat of snakebite leather. make sure its an even, solid coat.
2. iyanden darksun, slightly watered down, should take about 3-4 really thin coats.
thats the base for my imperial fists.
also, don't highlight or use golden yellow or sunburst with iyanden. iyanden is a different yellow so it'l look off.
hope it helps.

i think the best way to do yellow is to start from an earthy base (example snakebite leather) and work your way towards a yellow you preferably like.

I'll have to photo the rest of the unit, but if you look here: LINKY!
Have 10 more members of a Titanhammer unit to go
He was primed bleached bone (sorry. Discontinued by GW. I suggest thearmypainter.com and Skeleton Bone - CP3012. Very good color match)
Basecoat of the yellow was a single layer of Golden Yellow
Lined armor joints in brown ink - I'd do the earlier flesh wash next time around. If you must use the GW washes then Sepia will do the job, but you'll have to do a extra large highlight of Golden Yellow to bring the tone back up.
First highlight 4:2:1 Golden Yellow, Sunburst Yellow, Glaze medium
Second Highlight 2:2:1 Golden Yellow, Sunburst Yellow, Glaze medium
Spray coat of satin varnish
