Wow, 200,000+ gamers can't be wrong.
That place was buzzing with all stuff gaming, it was pretty cool. I'm only going to talk on the miniature gaming front here, because thats what most people here are interested in.
GW - no show. There was nothing GW related at all unless a shop vendor brought in their own stock. I was very dissapointed in this.
Forge World - Same issue as GW. No show.
Rackham - Awesome stuff. They had all their figs out on display and the awesome paint jobs to show them off.
Reaper - Also present in large numbers. Very cool, lots of figs that you could get by the per ounce price.
Privateer Press - A new Warmaching edition is coming out next year. You could get advance copies of the new rules. Their displays were awesome with some very impressive painting.
Armorcast - They had a moderatly sized booth, but walls and walls of their custom terrain pieces. If I was into making my own table tops it would be very easy to go broke there.
Flames of War - Small booth running moderatly sized demos. I give them points for having the best looking booth babes. They had their girls dress up in short cut off military themed attire, I know it caught more eyes then the tanks on the table to the average passer-by.
The others.
There were probably 20 other games that used scaled/paintable miniatures present. They all had awesome display models that were obviously painted by professionals. It all looked awesome and really cool. I have no idea how well the games played because there was just too many to get to to try them all with all the other stuff that I wanted to do. The one new game (to me anyway) that really caught my eye in this area was from Fantasy Flight Games called Anima Tactics. It played a lot like warmachine. The battle scale was small, probably fit best at 5 units max per side and on a table no larger than 3x3. The figures were very well defined and had some awesome concepts.
So who else went and what did you see that I missed?

I was there working in booth 2321. 80+ hours on the week = no time for anything else.
We sold a ton of Rackham plastics for AT43 and Confrontation.
Did you see Game Room's booth that had bits for pretty much every GW game?

Yeah, I pawed through the Tau bin trying to find a few smart missile systems for my devilfish. No luck. :(
It was an awesome showing over all. It was my first time at Gen Con and I was a little overwhelmed. I'll be going back and try to concentrate on just a few of the more choice events now that I know whats there.
I spent the first two days running around like a chicken with my head cut off.

I ran some demos for Warlord 2 at the Reaper booth. Course, the dummy with candy got more attention than my demo.

I just don't understand how GW can be a complete no show at the biggest damn gaming convention on the planet. At least a little booth or something wouldn't hurt and might introduce non-GW gamers (and their $$$) to the GW hobby

They have their own convention that draws plenty of people. Problem is, Games Days
seem to be a bust as GW isn't happy that they're making enough money and the fans
aren't happy with the quality of the Games Days.
GW's going to either have to fix the GDs or show up for Gencon.

They had a Mystery Box to (not) reveal that weekend, which is far more important that showing a little bit of marketing savvy and showing up to push your own products.
Generally speaking GW are not only a hopeless business, but they're a bunch of arrogant feths as well. They no doubt see themselves as 'above' the rest of the smaller game companies, therefore they don't want to be associated with them.
It'd be like if Microsoft didn't show up to E3 every year and instead held Microsoft Expo on the same weekend - exact same thing.

Was there, shopping around my Art Skilz, did pretty well, washed out of the Minis contests as usual. Dressed up a bit on Saturday...
GW hasn't been at GenCon for nearly a decade now, in addition to the GamesDay Issue, I seem to recall a lot of talk that GW royaly ticked off nearby dealers with the players at the demos shouting "WAAAHHHHHAAAH" at the top of their lungs every 10 minutes.
|
<Rarity> I am not whining, I am complaining! Do you want to hear whining?
Thiiis is whiiiiining! Oooo, this mini is too expeennsive! I'm' going brrookee! Can't you make it cheaper? Oh, it's resin and not metal anymore! Why didn't you take it off the sprue first? That's gonna leave a pour spout, and the FLGS is so far away, WHY DO I HAVE TO SUPPORT IIIIIIIT?! </Rairty> |

They were there at least when the convention was moved to Indy in 2003, so that is 6 years ago. I don't really remember if they went another year or two before stopping after that. I remember that they brought the bitz van and you could by bitz at the convention. I don't ever recall anyone yelling WAAAGGGHHHH (the proper spelling) but I also wouldn't have been on the sales floor every moment either.
