Hey Everyone. I'm thinking of getting into WHFB, but i don't knwo what army to start with.

I'm currently leaning towards Dwarves because i can get them for relatively cheap (Skull Pass), and orcs and goblins for the same reason. however, i dont like that dwarves have no magic, and Animosity is a real turn off for O&G. I was considering vampire counts originally, but i doubt i'd enjoy painting tons of zombies and skeletons. The only race i really don't want to play is Skaven. Rat People doesn't really appeal to me.

If you don't mind please post pro's and cons to your vote, i want to be as educated as possible, The main things im interested in are Cost, strength (I want to win fairly regularely), and painting options..

(please let me know if i missed any armies)

If you like magic lizardmen and dark elves could fit your bill. If cost is a factor you could do chaos dwarfs, you can use all the models out of the Skull Pass box because the army uses both green skins and dwarfs. All you would have to do is a few conversions and your all set.

Oh yes, and they can use magic!

Hope this helps.

Orcs and Goblins!

Who cares if people don't like them, If your Kunnin' enough, you can win pretty easily.

Plus, honestly, they really get such little respect.

If you really want competitiveness though, I'd go for Lizardmen.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

What?

Luna, Dark Elves are running rampant like, everywhere.

Now Lizards are toned down, that's for sure, but they're more Lizard Players than OnG.

It looks like O&G is winning right now, but I've heard alot of good things about Dark Elves. Also, to start an army I need at least 2 core choices and a character to be my general? in that case I'm thinking getting a battalion and... some random character for DE, Lizardmen, etc, or just Skull pass for O&G. Is this right?

That'll work well enough, methinks.

For O&G Giants are awesome. Also if you want to combat animosity then Black Orks are a good unit to look into. The skullpass box set is night goblin based so you probably would want to pick up some fanatics. Those guys are always fun. I play 40k way more than fantasy though so I'm not going to pretend to be a fantasy pro.

I'd go Lizardmen. They're easy enough to paint for the beginner, but have some pretty sexy models that good painters can have a field day on. The R&F Saurus are tough as nails and the Slann can dominate the magic phases on both sides of the table.

...plus if you're like me, you really liked dinosaurs as a kid, and enjoy nothing more than plowing a Stegadon into a bunch of squishy Elves.

Based on the negatives you listed, I'd suggest one of the following:
- Lizards
- HElves
- DElves
- WElves

The rest are too weak, or have a "problem" as you mentioned in your initial post.

I voted High Elves... In my litter town in Texas that was the only race not played... now up here I have seen a few and they have some tricks that look fun.

CUPCAKES OF DOOM!!! OUR MIGHTY FROSTING AND PAST-EXPIRATION DATENESS WILL SURELY BRING ABOUT THE DOOM OF THE WORLD!!!!

On a Slightly more serious note, Maybe Mortal Chaos would be a good choice-Good Magic, Relatively small armies, but tough as nails troops.

And this is coming from a Lizzies player .

Now give those dinosaurs swords, clubs, blowpipes, and halberds. How could anyone resist?

The Battle for Skull Pass box was a great value. I have NO regrets buying it, and I'm playing neither O&G nor Dwarves.

Orcs and Goblins! We are more sneaky than the kunnin' armies and more Kunnin' than the sneaky armies!

Especially if you are starting with some friends, Waaagh! makes a HUGE difference in who gets the charge!

I'm personally starting Dwarfs mostly because they are one of my favorite fantasy races. Also, I've been told I could be one, besides the fact I'm about 6'8''.
Though I'm not really in tune to Fantasy, I'd say that Dark Elves are fairly successful around my area.

Dwarves are a very good choice to learn the game. They are hardy and tough and their lists are forgiving of mistakes. No magic, but the Anvil of Doom does give you some cool effects that can be very effective in a game. They also have one of the most terrifying lists available, the Thorek gunline.

For pure cost effectiveness, go Ogre Kingdoms, you can get a full army off of E-bay for about 2 – 3 hundred $. Gut magic is fun and they do not have a lot of units to paint (unless you go hordes of gnoblars).

Empire, Warriors of Chaos, and Orcs n Goblins all offer a lot of troop variations and room to tailor your list to your style of game play. Again E-bay will land you a decent army for a decent price.

Any Elf army is a finesse army to play, but they can be fun. I have a HE and a WE army, and have lost to DEs plenty of times to know that all three armies can be tough. Models can be pricey though.

I voted Ogres.
