I have been painting a bit and I have found that being color blind (Red-Green, in my cases) makes it difficult for me to pick which of the Citadel colors work well together for either highlighting, blending, etc. For example, based on the GW articles I have read, I see that Mordian Blue works as a good base, from which I could drybrush or overbrush with ultramarine blue, and do some highlights with something like ice blue.

However, with all the different browns and greens, I have some trouble knowing what colors work well together. For example, what works well with Catachan Brown as a dry brush and highlight?

For highlighting brown a simple remedy would be to add bleach bone to the mix as a highlight tone. Bone instead of white to avoid pastelly colours and adds some warmth.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

For me, I always like extreme highlights. For example, I will highlight dark angels green with scorpion green.

My browns are almost always highlighted with bleached bone, or a bleacked bone mix.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".

All you really have to do is mix any color of brown with a certain amount of white or black or a tiny bit of other colors to get any shade of brown they sell at games workshop.

You can always experiment with certain shades on paper and get a friends opinion.

My shop teacher was color blind. The police chief brought his squad car to get it painted by the school to save the city some money. He wanted it painted khaki, the boys who were sent to pick up the paint thought it would be funny to get it tinted pink, instead, and got everyone in on it.

The chief came to pick up his car and told Mr. Monaghan that the paint job was great, the boys did a really good job on it, but it was a little too pink for his taste. He had the other shop teacher and a few coaches check his tint from then on.

Please excuse me for just butting in here, but this looked like a good way to get an answer without opening a new thread. Does anyone know what a replacement color for Vomit Brown is. I do not care for GW paint and it seems to be the one color I cannot find a decent replacement for.

@bubber and brother_zach - Thanks for the bleached bone advice, I probably would have went with white, and I think you both probably just saved me the pain of going the wrong way with that. Going to try that this weekend.

@a94marbo - Thanks, for my Renegades, I have been using Bestial Brown -> Devlan Mud -> Snakebite Leather -> Vomit Brown, and I like it, but seeing this other option is great.

@gunner762 and wittzo - Yeah, I loved painting when I was younger, but never understood why people always commented on my weird color choices. While I started getting suspect when I had trouble in my electronics class looking at resistors, it wasn't until I went to MEPS (for army entry testing) that I found out for sure I was color blind, and everything started to make much more sense.

@Bodichi - here is a great link I found on dakka http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

I suppose goblin green would work well wih DAG. I usually use scorpion green for an extreme look.

If you have it, the original LOTR rulebook had a decent highlight/shade chart in the painting section. It was just the straight paint colors without mixes.

I, too, have to deal with my color blindness.

If your unsure of the results (eg worried that you've put a too yellow highlight of green over a blue/green basecoat) glaze the area - a thinned down ink wash.
The new inks can do this but IMO the old ones are better and the purpose made ones from back in the day even better - I still use mine.

The glaze will bring the tones together & will also smooth out your painting technique.
